The President and Chairman of the Governing Council, Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM), Malam Ahmed Ladan Gobir, has urged human resource practitioners to treat employees with respect and dignity at workplaces.

Gobir made the appeal on Tuesday while speaking at the CIPM Abuja branch’s 24th annual conference.

He said the theme of the programme, ‘Fostering a Culture of Respect: Embracing Etiquette and Civility in HR Practices’, was apt and particularly relevant in reshaping the roles of HR professionals.

Gobir said: “Etiquette and civility in the workplace are not just about saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you,’ although those are great starting points. They are about creating an environment where every individual feels valued, respected and motivated to contribute to the success of the organisation.

“This is not merely a ‘nice-to-have’ but a ‘must have’ for any thriving workplace. When people are respected and treated with dignity, they perform better.

“Disrespect in the workplace leads to a loss of productivity, higher turnover rates and a toxic culture that no amount of corporate perks can remedy.”

The chairman, CIPM Abuja branch, Afolabi Daniel said: “When employees see their leaders modeling civility, they are more likely to follow suit. Leading by example can mean different things to different people, but the ultimate goal is to promote a culture of civility and respect.”
