The climate has been impacted by human actions, resulting in a backlash of extreme weather conditions. Nigerian Senator Ishiyaku Abba said this during a one-day seminar organized by the Iliya Yame Kwace Foundation for Justice, Peace, and Development.
The seminar, held to address the escalating climate crisis, highlighted the urgent need for proactive measures.
Senator Abba emphasized that human activities have wounded our climate, which in turn is retaliating through heatwaves, floods, landslides, droughts, and desert encroachment.
These conditions are exacerbating conflicts over resources, particularly between farmers and herders.
Stakeholders at the seminar proposed several solutions to mitigate these challenges, including extensive tree planting, preserving forest resources, ending open grazing, and introducing climate studies in educational curriculums at all levels.
Most Rev. Dr. Musa Panti Filibus, who chaired the event, underscored afforestation and reforestation as key strategies to reduce the ongoing conflicts between farmers and herders. He argued that such initiatives would help mitigate these perennial disputes.
Speaking to the press, Iliya Yame Kwace, chairman of the foundation, explained that the seminar aimed to educate the public on the benefits of tree planting and the importance of justice and peace-building in communities.
Kwace highlighted that since its inception, the foundation has championed the planting and maintenance of thousands of trees to combat climate change and promised to continue these efforts.
