Malawi women’s team to face Congo in first round of AFCON Qualifiers

The Malawi National Women’s Football team will meet Congo in the first round of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 Qualifiers.

This is according to the draw conducted in Morocco today. The first round will be played between the 17th and the 26th of February 2025, while the second round will be played between 20th and 28th October 2025.

The winner between the two teams will face the winner between Angola and Zimbabwe in the second round.

Meanwhile, the Malawi U20 Women’s team will meet the Central African Republic in the first round of the 2026 U20 Women’s World Cup African Qualifiers.

The winner between Malawi and the Central African Republic will meet the winner between South Sudan and Djibout in the second round of the Qualifiers.

The matches will be played in two legged fixtures with the first leg of the first round scheduled for 9th to 11th May 2025 and the second leg between 16th and 18th May 2025.

The first leg of the second round matches will be played between 19th and 21st September 2025, while the second leg has been scheduled between 26th and 28th September 2025.

Malawi Scorchers to know 2026 WAFCON Qualifiers opponents

The Malawi Senior Women’s National football team and the Women’s Under 20 team will today know their opponents in the 2026 Women’s AFCON and FIFA U20- World Cup qualifiers respectively as CAF will be conducting the official draw of the competitions at its Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

The Scorchers make a return to the competition after missing the 2024 qualifiers. The qualifiers will be composed of the two home and away rounds. The first round will have 32 teams with the best six 6 ranked teams according to the FIFA ranking Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Ghana Cameroon and Cote d’Ivoire exempted.

Malawi, who are among the 12 least ranked teams will be put in pot A alongside Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Tanzania and Uganda will be drawn against a team from pot B that has Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Equatorial Guinea, DR Congo and Congo in the first round.

The first round matches will be played in February next year while the last round will be played in October with the 11 winning teams qualifying to the final tournament to be held in March 2026. The Under 20 girls also make a return to the word qualifiers having last participated in the 2022 qualifiers when they lost to Zambia in the first round in 2021.

The qualifiers will be composed of four home and away rounds and Malawi, who are among the 12 non-exempted teams, will start from the first round . They are in pot two alongside Rwanda, Djibouti, South Sudan, Central Africa and Zimbabwe and will be drawn against a team from pot A that has Tunisia, Gambia, Togo, Cote d’Ivoire, Niger and Gabon.

The qualifiers will start in May 2025 and end in May 2026 with the top four teams qualifying for the World Cup to be held in September 2026.

Malawi and Lesotho eliminated from Boys U17 COSAFA Qualifiers

Malawi and Lesotho have been eliminated despite the latter winning 3-2 in a five-goal thriller in the other match in Group A.

Third-placed Lesotho lost two games against Angola and Mozambique but redeemed themselves against Malawi where they collected three points.

Having drawn two games against Angola and Mozambique, Malawi are dumped out of the competition after losing to Lesotho and have only garnered two points to finish bottom of Group A.

Both teams started the game on an equal footing but Lesotho were the first to score. Thuto Khetsi was tackled a yard away from the edge of the penalty area on the left side and he took the free kick and netted beating the goalkeeper at the near post to break the deadlock.

Malawi players took shots from afar and the notable one was from James Lumbe who hit the crossbar.

Malawi were strong in the midfield where holding midfielder Moffat Mnyontho controlled the tempo of the match and provided forward and diagonal passes to the wingers and striker on both sides.

In the midfield also, Khetsi had his own moments where he drove the ball before supplying the forwards with vertical passes.In the 26th minute, Rethabile Nqoko doubled Lesotho’s lead after outpacing defenders before beating the onrushing Malawi’s goalkeeper.

However, Malawi were determined to score and eventually reduced the deficit in the 41st minute when pacey James Lumbe drove the ball into the penalty area leaving defenders who tracked him to score against the onrushing Lesotho’s goalkeeper.

Malawi remain winless after draw against Angola in U17 tournament

Having drawn 1-1 with Angola, Malawi are still winless after two games at the TotalEnergies CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations | COSAFA Qualifier, while Mozambique defeated Lesotho 1-0 late on at the University of Johannesburg’s AW Muller Stadium on Friday.

Angola have amassed four points after a win and a draw to top Group A, but are joined by Mozambique, also on four points, after they beat Lesotho. Malawi are third after playing two draws and Lesotho are languishing at the bottom of Group A after two losses.

Malawi mainly played direct football to progress up the pitch where central defender Francis Alfanzema and right-back James Msongole played long vertical and diagonal passes behind Angola’s back line.

However, the Malawi forwards’ decision-making in the final third let them down as they could not score. On the other hand, Angola dominated in central midfield where Delfim Luwawu Lucas, Joao Capitao Manelson and Denzel Liyun played quick combination play to progress up the pitch.

Also, Angola penetrated on the right flank where full-back Jose Baptista Kalanguinha overlapped to create numerical superiority in attack and constantly delivered crosses into the penalty area.

In the 50th minute, James Lumbe scored a beautiful free-kick to give Malawi a lead. However, Angola players did not despair as they kept on attacking. Their persistence paid off in the 69thminute when right-back Kalanguinha delivered a cross into the penalty area and Paulo Dias Luvumbo headed into the net to equalise.

Malawi girls cruise past South Africa in U-17 COSAFA Championship

The Malawi U17 girls team have started their 2024 COSAFA Girls Under 17 Championship on a low note after going down 4-2 to hosts South Africa in their group B opening match.

The hosts looked hungry for early goals right from the first whistle as they created numerous scoring opportunities in the opening minutes but could not beat goalkeeper Esther Maulidi. They finally broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute through Leonay Kock.

Malawi Coach Linda Kasenda used all the ten infield players that she travelled with in the first group which arrived on Monday resting the seven girls who joined the team yesternight but pressure at the back made her make an early change introducing Grace Khunga for Ethel Tambala at 34 minutes.

South Africa got a penalty in the 36th minute following a foul in the box and captain Katleho Malebana converted from the spot to make it 2-0 for the hosts by half time.

The second half started with a double change for Malawi with Jean Fyson and Asimenye Mwanyongo replacing Enelesi Fabiano and Faluna Umali respectively. Mwanyongo made an immediate impact pulling one back for Malawi just a minute after her introduction.

Malawi tried to push for an equalizer but the hosts defended well. Knock then claimed a quick brace to claim a hattrick before Fatima Mali scored Malawi’s second goal two minutes before the end of the match.

Malawi will play Madagascar in the second group stage match on Saturday. Group winners and best runner-up will qualify to the knockout stage.

COSAFA Qualifiers: Mozambique and Malawi share the spoils on day one

Mozambique and Malawi played to a 1-1 draw in a tightly-contested match on the opening day of the TotalEnergies CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations | COSAFA Qualifier played at the University of Johannesburg’s AW Muller Stadium, while Angola defeated Lesotho 2-1 at the same venue to go top of the group.

Both Mozambique and Malawi mostly penetrated through the flanks. Additionally, both teams’ defenders played long passes behind the defensive lines to try create scoring opportunities.

However, Malawi have only themselves to blame as they got numerous set-pieces to take the lead in the first half but they could not score. In the 45th minute in the first half, Mozambique took the lead through an unmarked Gift Chibala who scored from inside the goal area.

In search of an equalizer, Malawi players went forward in numbers but struggled to penetrate as Mozambique played deep in their half to protect their lead. Malawi’s substitute Thole Sachenja tried hard with his speed to play in tight spaces so that he could take shots at goal but Mozambique remained resolute although in some instances, they were porous.

In the last seven minute, Malawi’s Hassan Madula hit the post with his low shot. Immediately after, Malawi got a free kick but goalkeeper Carlos Antonio palmed the ball and denied them a goal. However, Malawi equalized in the 90th minute through Bena Quissime who unleashed a thunderous shot to level matters.

Malawi U17 teams arrive safely in South Africa ahead of tourney

The Malawi U17 Boys and Girls National teams have safely arrived in Johannesburg, South ahead of the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nationals-COSAFA Qualifier and Cosafa U17 Girls Championship which will take place from 4th to 13th December.

The Boys team has checked in at Gadern Court Milpark Hotel while the Girls are at The Catalyst Hotel. The tournaments will take place between 3rd and 14th December 2024. The boys tournament will act as qualifer for CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

Malawi Boys who are in group A alongside Mozambique, Lesotho and Angola will play their first match against Mozambique on December 4th with the second match against Angola scheduled for 6th December. The last group stage match will be against Lesotho on December 8th.

The two finalists for the tournament will book a place at the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations which will be hosted by Ivory Coast next year. The Girls join South Africa, Namibia and Madagascar in the competition and they will play their opening match against the hosts on December 5th.

Their second match is against Madagascar on December 7th while the last group stage match against Namibia will be played two days later.

The tournaments will take place between 3rd and 14th December 2024. The boys tournament will act as qualifer for CAF TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations. Malawi Boys who are in group A alongside Mozambique, Lesotho and Angola will play their first match against Mozambique on December 4th with the second match against Angola scheduled for 6th December.

Malawi Flames move three steps up in latest FIFA rankings

The Flames of Malawi have moved three steps up from position 134 to 131 in the latest Men’s World ranking released by FIFA.

This follows the team’s incredible performance in the November International Window when they played a goalless draw against Burundi away before defeating Burkina Faso 3-0 at home in the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers.

Meanwhile, the Chipolopolo boys have moved seven rungs up on the global charts, according to the latest FIFA rankings. According to the latest rankings, Zambia now sits 87th on the global charts and 18th in Africa.

African champions Coted’Ivoire are sixth in Africa and 46th in the world while Morocco remain top of the continent and 14th on the globe. Zambia’s next opponents in their Group E USA/Canada/ Mexico FIFA World Cup qualifier Tanzania are ranked 106th in the world while Niger 122nd.

The Chipolopolo’s rise has been aided by their two back-to-back wins in the Group G Morocco 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Coted’Ivoire and Sierra Leone. Zambia beat Coted’Ivoire 1-0 before battering Sierra Leone 2-0 to end as table toppers and seal their ticket to the Morocco 2025 AFCON.

COSAFA: Malawi U17 team steps up preparations for Girls’ Championship

The Malawi U17 Girls’ National team captured during their training session at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre.

The team is preparing for the COSAFA U17 Girls’ Championship which will take place between 4th and 13th December.

Meanwhile, Football Association of Malawi President Fleetwood Haiya held a meeting with the President of the Federation Royale Marocaine de Football , Fouzi Lekjaa, who is also a FIFA Council Member and the Minister Delegate for the Budget in the Kingdom of Morocco.

The two nations are set to formalize a memorandum of understanding aimed at promoting football development. This collaboration will include opportunities for Malawi’s national football teams to play friendly matches with Morocco, as well as capacity-building initiatives for referees, coaches, and football administrators.

Expressing his excitement, Haiya stated, “I’m very happy with the discussions we had with President Lekjaa. This partnership will significantly support our vision of transforming the game in Malawi. Morocco is excelling in football on the continent, and there is so much we can learn from their success.”

During his visit, President Haiya also met with Kennedy Lweya, Malawi’s Charge d’Affaires e.p of the Kingdom of Morocco, at the Embassy. Their discussions focused on enhancing the friendship and cooperation between the two nations, using football as a key platform for deeper collaboration
