The Women are taking center stage in peacebuilding efforts to address the escalating conflicts between farming and herding communities in Taraba and Adamawa states.
These efforts, spearheaded under the COMITAS II (Contributing to the Mitigation of Conflict Over Natural Resources) initiative, showcase the pivotal role women play in fostering dialogue and promoting coexistence in regions strained by disputes over land and water.
With climate change and population growth intensifying competition over natural resources, women have emerged as powerful agents of change. Leveraging their unique community roles, they are building trust, promoting empathy, and strengthening social cohesion in these conflict-prone areas.
Through their involvement in facilitating community dialogues, conducting outreach, and providing training in conflict resolution, women under the COMITAS II initiative are helping to reduce violence and lay the foundation for sustainable peace. Their grassroots efforts, rooted in collaboration and mutual understanding, are yielding remarkable results.
At a recent event organized under the initiative, Mrs. Wonosato Uziel Frank Angama presented a paper titled Women’s Role in Peacebuilding. She emphasized, “Women play a vital role in peacebuilding, contributing significantly to conflict prevention, resolution, and sustainable peace. Their perspectives and active participation are indispensable in achieving long-term harmony.”
Barr. Lubna Muhammadu Dodo also contributed with a presentation on GBV Referral Pathways: Enhancing Support for Survivors. She highlighted the need for coordinated frameworks to ensure survivors of gender-based violence receive timely and effective support across healthcare, psychosocial, legal, security, and economic reintegration services.
Participants at the event commended the initiative for its impact. Hon. Maimuna S. Bariki, Vice Chairman of Numan LGA, and Hon. Luri Zephaniah, Vice Chairman of Girei LGA, lauded the organizers for empowering women to lead the charge in resolving deeply rooted conflicts.
The COMITAS II initiative demonstrates how women’s leadership and participation can drive transformative change. By addressing the root causes of disputes and fostering a culture of coexistence, women are proving to be indispensable in building resilient and peaceful communities.
