Journalists and concerned citizens on Thursday morning stormed Force Headquarters, Abuja, to protest against continued detention of a journalist with Foundation of Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Daniel Ojukwu.

The protest at the NPF headquarters followed the continuous detention of Ojukwu for nine days as well as the silence of the police leadership on the matter.

Prominent Nigerians like the Revolution Now Convener, Omoyele Sowore, Human Rights Activist, Bukky Shonibare and other media practitioners lead the protest at the entrance of the police complex.

The activists demanded immediate release of Ojukwu, saying his continued detention was equivalent to an extrajudicial trial and punishment.

They also condemn the incessant use and abuse of the remand order process, which is observed to be the new machinery for which the Nigeria Police continuously violates the rights of Nigeria citizens.

Addressing the concerned citizens, Commissioner of Police in charge of Federal operations, CP Vungmoh Kwaimo, commended the conduct of the protest, and assured that Detained Daniel Ojukwu will be charged to court at the appropriate time.

In October 2023, Ojukwu had reported how the then Senior Special Assistant on Sustainable Development Goals to the President, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire paid N147.1 million to an account traced to Enseno Global Ventures, an Abuja-based restaurant, for the construction of classrooms.
