As Nigeria marks a significant milestone—25 years of uninterrupted democracy from 1999 to 2024—citizens and political leaders alike are reflecting on the country’s longest democratic stretch in its history. Many have hailed this period as a testament to the resilience and commitment of Nigerians to uphold democratic values.

In Adamawa State, various stakeholders have highlighted the journey so far, underscoring the crucial role political parties play in sustaining democracy. At a recent gathering, Barr Atih Shehu, the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasized the contributions of his party, noting that “the PDP has driven over 27 percent of the development in the past 25 years.”

Hamisu Idris, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Adamawa, defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s first year in office against premature judgments. “It’s unfair to claim Tinubu has failed. His administration has implemented sound policies that offer relief to Nigerians. Let’s give him more time,” Idris urged Nigerian.

Barrister Jibrin Ibrahim, a PDP aspirant, echoed the sentiment that democracy remains the most preferred system of governance globally. “Even tribal unions, market women, sports clubs, faith-based, and community-based organizations now elect their leaders throhugh democratic processes,” Ibrahim pointed out.

Honorable Dahiru Hammandikko, National Coordinator and Convener of the Northern Region Support’s Tinubu Kashim, praised President Tinubu’s achievements over the past year, particularly in security, capital projects, and recurrent expenditures. He called on all Nigerians to support the president’s efforts.

Democracy Day, now celebrated on June 12, is a national public holiday in Nigeria commemorating the restoration of democracy in 1999. This year’s celebration serves as a reminder of the importance of continued investment in democratic values to ensure a robust and participatory government for all.
