With goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah, Liverpool defeated archrivals Manchester City 2-0 on Sunday to grab a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League and prolong their opponents’ losing streak to seven games.
The outcome sent Pep Guardiola’s struggling team to an unusual fifth place in the table, 11 points behind their fiercest rivals in recent memory, and was City’s first four-game losing streak in the Premier League since 2008.
Liverpool started out strong, buoyed by a Champions League victory against Real Madrid in the middle of the week.
They had a flurry of chances, including two thundering headers from Virgil van Dijk, one of which struck the post, and could have won the match by halftime.
After a magnificent long pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold to Salah on the right flank in the 12th minute, the first goal was scored.
Gakpo nudged the ball in at the back post as his low cross flew past Manchester City keeper Stefan Ortega.
After Ortega took down his striker partner Luis Diaz in the box, driving the Anfield crowd into a frenzy, Salah scored Liverpool’s second goal with a penalty kick in the 78th minute.
