Tried for sexual assault while intoxicated, Wissam Ben Yedder was found guilty. The Frenchman was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended.
For several months, Wissam Ben Yedder (34 years old) has been away from the football fields. The striker, who is experiencing a real descent into hell, is defending himself in the courts. Indeed, the former AS Monaco player, who was already in the sights of the justice system last year following an alleged rape case, has had to explain himself for several weeks for acts of sexual assault, which allegedly took place last September while he was intoxicated. On October 15, WBY testified in court and spoke of his addiction to alcohol, having been stopped by the police with a blood alcohol level of 0.76 mg per liter of exhaled air.
Ben Yedder had spoken about his addiction to alcohol
“It’s a bit of a difficult period. I had problems with my agents, with my wife… I had been drinking for three or four days. I was drinking more and more, it was getting worse. I started having problems two years ago, since then I’ve had difficulties. I was already drinking before, but in small doses and from time to time. I felt better, I thought it could make me forget this pressure. I have responsibilities in my family, it was hard to bear (…) I had drunk two bottles in a row, I wasn’t myself. I know it’s wrong, I was under the influence of alcohol, I should have stopped, but I wasn’t myself.”
Before the criminal court of Nice, he then explained: “I’m a loner, I have trouble trusting people. I’ve been betrayed in quite a few cases. I took refuge alone in alcohol, but I realize that it is the worst mistake of my life. I had been drinking and I do not remember what happened. Because of the alcohol, I have memory problems. I sincerely ask forgiveness from the complainant, from my family…” In the process, the Prosecutor had requested a significant sanction for the footballer, namely an 18-month prison sentence as well as an 18-month suspended probationary sentence.
He is found guilty and punished
This Monday, the former TFC and Sevilla player was given his verdict. Indeed, French media RMC Sport revealed that he was found guilty of all the charges, namely drunk driving, refusing to comply with the police and sexual assault. Physically absent during the verdict, he was sentenced to a 2-year suspended prison sentence for sexual assault while intoxicated. In addition, the courts imposed a duty of care on him, and he must also compensate the victim to the tune of 6,500 euros. In detail, he owes her 5,000 euros for moral damages and 1,500 euros for legal costs.
WBY must also pay the sum of 5,000 euros for his refusal to comply. His driving license was also suspended for six months, while the vehicle belonging to his father was returned to him. Ben Yedder’s troubles are not over yet, as he has already been under judicial supervision for several weeks in connection with another case of rape and sexual assault dating back to 2023. Indicted, like his brother Sabri, he will also have to answer for his actions at the end of December concerning the psychological violence against his wife as part of their divorce proceedings.
