The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has debunked reports claiming that notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has been arrested.
Speaking on Tuesday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, dismissed the rumors, stating, “All news regarding the arrest of Bello Turji by troops should be treated as fake news, please.”
The clarification followed social media reports alleging that troops of Operation Fasan Yamma in Nigeria’s North West region had captured Turji.
Similarly, counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama also refuted claims of Turji’s arrest. In a statement on X, Makama described the reports as false and misleading, adding that an audio recording circulating online, where two individuals claimed Turji had been captured, was baseless.
Makama confirmed that Bello Turji remains at large, but security forces are intensifying their efforts to track and apprehend him.
The statement reads, “The purported audio recording, in which two individuals are heard claiming that Bello Turji has been captured, is misleading and lacks any credible basis. We urge the public to disregard such unfounded rumours.
“Bello Turji remains at large, and from the last check, security forces are intensifying efforts to locate and apprehend him.”
Former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has described the killing of dreaded bandit leader, Bello Turji’s deputy, Aminu Kanawa as good news.
Kanawa was behind the numerous violent banditry attacks across Zurmi, Shinkafi, Isa, and Sabon Birni in Zamfara and Sokoto States.
But, he was killed alongside some commanders of Turji by troops of the Nigerian Army.
In a post on X, Ahmad wrote: “Good news! Bello Turji, the notorious bandit leader, has reportedly fled following a decisive military offensive that resulted in the elimination of his second-in-command, Aminu Kanawa, along with several key members of his group.
“Aminu Kanawa was notorious for masterminding numerous violent banditry attacks across Zurmi, Shinkafi, Isa, and Sabon Birni in Zamfara and Sokoto States.”
On his part, former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani said troops should ensure the protection of locals from reprisal attacks.
“While the elimination of the offspring of the kingpin of banditry in Zamfara, Bello Turji is a major operational success, efforts must be made to protect the locals from possible reprisals by the terrorists,” he wrote.

Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has reportedly issued a warning to residents of villages near Shinkafi, threatening to attack anyone heading to the Shinkafi market.
Local sources informed Zagazola Makama that Turji declared individuals caught disobeying his order would face severe repercussions.
This threat is viewed as an attempt by the fugitive bandit leader to conceal his movements and avoid the intensified security operations targeting his criminal network.
According to Zagazola Makama, Turji appears to be trying to assert control over his territories and manipulate public perception in the region.
Contrary to circulating rumors, credible security sources and local residents have confirmed that Turji has not suffered any injuries.
Despite the speculation, the bandit leader remains elusive and continues to evade the security forces actively pursuing him.
Reports suggest that Turji was seen yesterday in nearby villages, appearing distressed.
His movements indicate increasing unease as authorities tighten their operations around his hideouts.
Efforts to capture Turji and dismantle his criminal network, which has caused significant insecurity in Zamfara State and surrounding areas, are ongoing.
Security forces have intensified their operations, and residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities.

Notorious bandit leader and terrorist Bello Turji is reportedly on the run following a renewed offensive by the Nigerian military targeting him and his fighters.
According to reports, the military has deployed elite troops and special forces to intensify efforts against banditry in the Northwest region.
The operation targets Turji’s strongholds, including strategic locations in Fakai, a notorious hideout within the Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, long recognized as a safe haven for Turji and his associates.
PR Nigeria reports that the latest military offensive was bolstered by proactive intelligence-sharing and early warning systems, which allowed for the safe evacuation of civilians from high-risk areas, minimizing collateral damage.
In a series of precise airstrikes by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), numerous high-ranking lieutenants, commanders, fighters, and possibly family members of Turji were killed. These strikes dismantled key hideouts and severely weakened Turji’s operational network, forcing him to flee.
Troops from Operation Hadarin Daji and the special forces unit of Operation Fansan Yamma have strategically positioned themselves along key escape routes near Badarawa, Chida, Fakai, and surrounding areas to intercept him.
A credible defense intelligence source described the ongoing campaign as a deliberate and sustained effort to eradicate bandit leaders and their networks.
“This is one of the most decisive military operations in recent history. The era of notorious bandits operating with impunity is coming to an end. Our approach is precise and unrelenting,” the source said.
The source also commended the support of local political and community leaders for providing vital intelligence, adding that the morale of security forces remains at an all-time high.
“We have implemented an effective early warning system to protect civilians and focus exclusively on bandit enclaves. With strong backing from the government and the public, our troops are committed to dismantling these criminal strongholds,” the source added.
Nigerian troops have escalated their offensive against the notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, in Zamfara State.
Zagazola Makama, a Lake Chad Basin counterterrorism and insurgency expert, who made this known in a post on his X account on Sunday, stated that the recent coordinated military strikes have dismantled his key hideouts in Fakai, Shinkafi Local Government Area.
Makama stated that the development comes after a series of successful missions that resulted in the destruction of multiple bandit camps in the Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The security expert listed the camps targeted by the military to include Zangon Dan Gwandi, Zangon Tsaika, Zangon Kagara, and a school reportedly used by Turji to store foodstuffs and weapons.
According to him, the military burned the school to prevent it from serving as a supply base for Turji’s network.
“Intelligence sources confirmed to Zagazola Makama that Turji’s group has suffered significant losses. “We killed his son and many of his fighters during the operation. I also listened to Turji’s panicked voice calling for reinforcements from seven other bandit leaders. None of them showed up, and one of his spies narrowly escaped from us today,” the sources said.
A considerable number of Turji’s associates, including high profile lieutenants and possibly family members, were neutralized during the targeted strikes.
“Further reports reveal that four of Turji’s fighters were injured in previous encounters, while others have retreated to Mangwarorin Gebe, allegedly hiding stolen livestock and valuables,” Makama said.

Former Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, has raised the alarm over the activities of notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji.
Bafarawa claimed that Turji and his men have been launching attacks and causing mayhem in communities along the Zamfara- Sokoto axis.
In an interview with RFI Hausa, the former governor called for government intervention.
“If an individual like Turji would unleash such mayhem, and disrupt movement in our communities, then it calls for action. Government should rise up to the challenge,” Bafarawa said.
Turji recently threatened thunder and brimstone if his relatives detained were not released by January 1, 2025.
“I will begin 2025 by killing the people of Shinkafi. Thereafter, we will demand ransom and they will not have peace of mind. We will disrupt the peaceful order and restore conflict. If they don’t want this, they must release our people who have been arrested,” Turji warned in a video.

Troops of Sector 2 Joint Task Force, North West Operation Fansan Yamma, have arrested a 25-year-old suspected female ammunition courier, Shamsiyya Ahadu.
The Coordinator of the Joint Media Coordination Centre, Lt. Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Gusau, Zamfara State.
According to the statement, Ahadu was apprehended on December 28 along with her accomplice, motorcyclist Ahmed Husaini, in the Badarawa area of Shinkafi Local Government Area.
She was found in possession of 764 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and six magazines intended for delivery to the camp of terrorist leader Bello Turji.
The statement explained, “Her arrest followed an intelligence report about the movement of terrorist logistics along the road from Kware to Badarawa in Shinkafi Local Government Area. Acting on this report, troops swiftly set up a roadblock, leading to the suspects’ capture. Both are currently under investigation by the appropriate authorities.”
It further reaffirmed the troops’ determination to dismantle terrorist networks and prevent the illegal movement of arms and ammunition within their area of operation.
The statement called on the public to continue providing credible information to aid in the capture of wanted terrorists and their collaborators. It also expressed gratitude for the local support received in achieving the operation’s objectives.
The Minister of Defence, Mohammad Badaru, has ordered troops of Operation Fansar Yamma to intensify efforts to arrest notorious bandits’ leader Bello Turji.
Badaru gave the order on Thursday while addressing the troops at the One Brigade Headquarters in Gusau, Zamfara State capital.
He said President Bola Tinubu has been following the activities of the troops in the past few months and has seen some levels of improvement in the operation against terrorists in the region.
“The President has asked me to thank you and to urge you to do more to end insecurity in these areas of operation and the country. He is ready to provide all you need to end insecurity in the Northwest and Nigeria.
“I had some reassurances from the commanding officer and was pleased. I’m sure that we will reach the goal. Are you ready to finish with them? Are you ready to end it? Please get me Turji,” Badaru said.
The minister, who visited Operation Fansar Yamma in Gusau to take briefings on military operations, was received by the Commander, Joint Taskforce Northwest Operation Fansar Yamma, Major General Oluyinka Soyele and the deputy governor of Zamfara State, Mani Mumuni, among other dignitaries.
