Mathys Tel has officially joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan from Bayern Munich until the end of the season. The deal includes an option to buy, marking the conclusion of one of the most talked-about transfer sagas of the winter window.
After weeks of speculation, Spurs confirmed the signing of the 19-year-old French forward. “We are delighted to announce the signing of Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich, subject to international clearance and a work permit. The French U21 international will join the Club on loan until the end of the 2024/25 season with an option to make the transfer permanent in the summer. He will wear the number 11 jersey,” the club stated.
A Transfer Saga with Many Twists
Initially reluctant to leave Bayern, Tel reconsidered due to his limited playing time in Germany. While Chelsea made an attempt to sign him, the young striker turned down the move in favor of a club that could offer him more regular minutes. Tottenham emerged as a strong contender, but Tel initially declined their offer before eventually being swayed by the club’s persistence.
Bayern Munich, meanwhile, rejected interest from Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund, preferring to send their player abroad. As the transfer deadline approached, Manchester United and Arsenal also made late bids, with reports suggesting Tel had a preference for United.
However, Tottenham ultimately secured the deal, thanks to a convincing pitch from head coach Ange Postecoglou and club chairman Daniel Levy. The final agreement includes a loan with a purchase option of €55 million plus €5 million in bonuses, along with a six-year contract should the deal become permanent. Spurs have pulled off a major coup, adding one of Europe’s most promising young forwards to their squad.
