The Football Association (FA) announced on Friday that Manchester United’s first-team coach, Darren Fletcher, has been given a three-match extended touchline ban for arguing with the referees during the team’s 2-1 victory against Brentford at home last month.
In addition, the former United midfielder received a punishment of 7,500 pounds ($9,705.75) for his outbursts after Brentford took a 1-0 lead at the end of halftime.
When the home team was reduced to 10 men after referee Sam Barrott told Matthijs de Ligt to walk to the touchline to stop the bleeding from a gash on his head, United objected when Ethan Pinnock scored.
“The coach acted in an improper and/or confrontational manner and/or he used abusive and/or insulting words towards the fourth official and the referee and/or assistant referees,” the FA said in a statement.
Although Fletcher acknowledged the misbehaviour complaint, he denied any abuse.
The regulatory body, however, declared that they had evidence of his behaviour and levied the penalties.
