Worried by the alarming rate of child mortality in some parts of the country, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has forged a partnership with the government of Cross River State to tackle the menace.
The collaboration has led to the commencement of a campaign for vaccination in 200 Nigerian communities
Indication emerged that, despite a 99 per cent coverage in vaccinations in Cross River State, there are still areas where mothers hesitate to give their children vaccines.
To this end, the United Nations Children’s Fund in Collaboration with the state government has commenced a campaign to sensitize mothers on the danger of zero dose.
The campaign, currently ongoing in 200 communities across 33 states of Nigeria aims to address hesitancy in vaccine acceptance.
Dr Olusoji Akinleye, a vaccine specialist at UNICEF explained that Zero Dose occurs when children, pregnant and nursing mothers do not have access to vaccines.
He noted that it is even more dangerous for children who are denied vaccines in the first weeks of their lives.
Akinleye who stated this at a media dialogue on sick newborns and zero doses in Calabar, said the situation required urgent attention in order to save Nigerian children from early deaths.
According to him, “This is the reason we want to embark on one big catch-up campaign to convince people to accept the vaccines irrespective of psychological, religious and sociocultural barriers.
“Traditional and religious influences debar people in some parts of the country from accepting vaccines”.
Speaking, the Director General of the Cross River Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Viviene Mesembe Otu said, “In our case, logistics hampered delivery of Antigens and vaccines from Abuja, even though some vaccines are few.
According to a UNICEF data, 7,100,000 babies were born in Nigeria in 2015, approximately 19,500 every day. The data also indicates that Nigeria’s neonatal mortality rate (NMR) is 34 deaths per 1,000 live births.
This situation probably informed the remark by Dr. Martin Dohlsten, Health Manager, UNICEF, Abuja in his presentation at the media dialogue where he advocated what he called a mentality shift from the survival of mother and child at birth to opportunities for both to thrive afterward. Dohlsten also sought answers for why expectant mothers would shun standard health facilities, stressing that adequate ante-natal care is key to saving the child from infections, asphyxia and immaturity while calling on particularly the government and other stakeholders to engage in well-coordinated interventions towards achieving this vision for Nigeria.
In their presentations, both Mrs. Aderonke Akinola-Akinwole, SBC Specialist. UNICEF Lagos Office and Dr. Olusoji Akinleye, Health Specialist, UNICEF Enugu Office, identified barriers to interventions on child mortality and advocated measures at breaking the barriers.
They also agreed that the media have an onerous role to play in bringing all the stakeholders together to form a united front in fighting the scourge that threatens to decimate the future of Nigeria.
Akinola-Akinwole specifically advocated a home-grown antidote to the scourge, saying: “UNICEF will not be in Nigeria forever, so it is expedient on us all as Nigerians to find a lasting solution to these challenges in our own way.”
.NEC to formally adopt report in January
.As IGP orders tight security to curb traffic, highway robbery, other crimes ahead of Christmas
Jonas Ezieke, Abuja with agency report
The National Economic Council (NEC) Thursday acknowledged receipt of report on the creation of state police from the governors of the 36 states of the federation.
Addressing State House correspondents at the end of the 146th NEC meeting chaired Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna state said all the governors are unanimous about the desirability of the creation of state police to fight insecurity in the country.
According to him,
“Today, one of the discussions we had at the NEC meeting was the update on the creation of state police. As you are aware, there was a submission by States toward the establishment of state police.
”Today, about 36 states have already made their submission for establishing state police in Nigeria. And I can say here that from what is available, virtually most of the states are in agreement with the establishment of state police in Nigeria.
“The council decided to step down the discussion until we receive a report from the secretariat. After that, there will be deliberation at the next NEC meeting,” he said.
He also highlighted a resolution from the previous NEC meeting calling for further stakeholder engagement to refine the proposal.
“And not only that, there’s also a resolution in the last NEC meeting, which is today the Secretariat has also agreed on that, there will be further stakeholder engagement after the panel and deliberation by the members of the NEC.
“Considering the fact that virtually every state has their peculiarity in terms of the problem we are having of insecurity in our own states. Knowing fully well that we have a lot of ungoverned space in Nigeria, and also that we have a lot of deficit in terms of number of boots on ground, looking at the fact that a lot of security agencies, the police, the army and other relevant security agencies have no personnel to cover all the ungoverned spaces. That is the reason why most of us agreed that establishment of state police in Nigeria is the way forward toward addressing the problem of insecurity in our own country,” he said.
Meanwhile, ahead of
this year’s yuletide festivities, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun has assured Nigerians of the emplacement of intensive security measures to ensure the safety and protection of lives and property.
To this effect, the IGP has directed the immediate deployment of adequate personnel to strategic locations, key areas and identified hotspots across all states, an initiative aimed at curbing traffic, highway robberies, and other criminal activities during this period of increased-mobility, public gatherings and celebrations.
This was contained in a statement by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police and Force Public Officer,
The IGP’s directive includes the mobilization of police officers to highways, major roads, urban centres, and recreational centres nationwide.
According to him, “Officers will be strategically positioned to deter crimes via increased police presence and visibility on major highways and roads prone to criminal activities, particularly highway robberies, which tend to spike during festive seasons.
“In line with the IGP’s commitment to ensuring public safety, the Nigeria Police Force has already made significant headway in combating these crimes. “On the 10th of December 2024, police operatives attached to the Lagos State Command arrested 4 suspected robbers identified as Akeem Alabi ‘m’, Adewale Sogbesan ‘m’, Emmanuel Izeagbe ‘m’, and Francis Okoko ‘m’.
“The suspects, upon their arrest, confessed to being members of a robbery syndicate operating around the Costain axis in the State.
“Similarly, on the 6th of December 2024, police operatives of the Anambra State Command trailed and arrested a suspected armed robber identified as Miracle Mwakaloi ‘m’ at Awka.
“Upon his arrest and subsequent interrogation, the suspect led the operatives to his apartment, where during a search, 3 Ak-47 rifles were recovered.
“The Nigeria Police Force stands firm in its commitment to providing a safe environment during and beyond the Yuletide season.
“With ongoing proactive measures, including enhanced patrols, community engagement, and a specific focus on public safety, the Force is dedicated to ensuring that the festive season is celebrated without the shadow of crimes.
‘While urging citizens to cooperate with heightened police presence which promises to be professional and law-abiding, the IGP further encourages citizens to remain vigilant and report all suspicious activities to the Police and other law enforcement agencies”.

The grandmother, moved by Mrs Mbah’s kindness, expressed her deepest gratitude for the support and care they received.
This gesture underscores the Enugu State Government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of children and ensuring that survivors of abuse receive the necessary support to heal and thrive.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has denied endorsing the creation of Anioma State. Ohanaeze described the published advertorial as the handiwork of one Okechukwu Isiguzoro and urged people to discountenance it.
In a statement e-signed and made available to newsmen by the National Secretary Ambassador Okey Emuchay, the organization lamented that despite efforts made to discourage Isiguzoro from such activities,he has remained unyielding. The Ohanaeze statement reads fully
“The attention of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been drawn to an advertorial in the Vanguard Newspaper of December 5, 2024, to the effect that Ohanaeze Ndigbo has endorsed the demand for the creation of Anioma State. The Open Letter to His Excellency, Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria purports that “the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, representing all the Igbo speaking peoples in the 13 states of the major and minor indigeneity in Nigeria, as well as the millions in the Diaspora, writes…….”
The advertorial is signed by Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Professor Chubikeya Achokawa, Chief Alexander Chikalue Okemiri, Prince Eze Ozobu, Prof. Obasi Igwe, and Justice Alpha Ikpeama on behalf of Ndigbo.
“We are aware that the Igbo nation will surely be incensed and rattled by such an advertorial that did not pass through the Igbo cultural consensus.
“We have pleaded with the above characters that the Igbo problem is far beyond them. The egalitarian Igbo formed an Imeobi Ohanaeze and the Ohanaeze General Assembly where the major issues affecting the Igbo are deliberated upon before arriving at a resolution.
“It must be clearly stated that we do not in any way begrudge the legitimate and inalienable right of the Anioma movement led by Sen.Ned Nwoko.
“We commend the courage and steadfastness of the Distinguished Senator Nwoko but a situation where we have other demands for State creation, such as Aba, Adada, Etiti, Orashi, Orlu States, etc; it is very unthoughtful, harebrained and a huge embarrassment to the Igbo nation for a few persons to use the hallowed name of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to issue a far-reaching Press release without adequate consultations with the Igbo stakeholders.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Imeobi Ohanaeze will soon be convened to constitute an electoral umpire for the January 2025 Ohanaeze election. During the meeting, Ohanaeze will review the State of affairs in Nigeria and other matters affecting the Igbo.
“Within the week, Ohanaeze had issued a statement to debunk a press release by crisis triggers to the effect that Ohanaeze is in a deep crisis. In the release, we reiterated that the Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is Ambassador Okey Emuchay, MFR and that any other press releases emanating from elsewhere should be taken for what it is.
“We once again plead with the above characters to desist from desecrating the sacredness of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization; reminding them that the Igbo all over the world owe a profound emotional attachment to Ohanaeze Ndigbo. For emphasis, Ohanaeze represents the soul, passion, history, culture, cosmology and politicality of the Igbo. Thus, it is inconceivable that any meaningful Igbo will become the willing tool for destabilizing the Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
Once more, we urge all sons and daughters of the Igbo nation to remain calm.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has asked the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo to stop the harassment of the Labour union members in the state by the men of Nigerian police force.
NLC said as a brand-new Governor, Okpebholo should have his priorities and should not be authorising the harassment of trade union leaders in the state.
It also warned the police to retrieve their honour if they can, by not lending themselves to the performance of dirty jobs in contravention of their oath of office.
The Congress further urged the Governor to leave Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress alone, saying it is too soon to start a fight with it.
NLC statement signed by its Head of Information and public affairs, Benson Upah, demanded apology and retracing of steps over the harassment and intimidation.
It reads: “We are disturbed by a recorded incident of unauthorised/illegal breaking in and entry of the offices of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress by some police personnel of Edo State Police Command.
“The incident happened in Benin City in the absence of the Chairperson of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress who is attending the annual Harmattan School in Abuja.
“Neither the police nor any other entity has offered an explanation for this criminal behaviour but there are speculations that the police might have acted at the instance of the new Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo
“However, whether the police acted alone or at the behest of the Governor, we demand an apology and retracing of steps unconditionally.
“Trade unions are protected by law, under no circumstances are their affairs to be interfered with by the state or any entity or be forcefully brought under the governance or control of any other.
“Acts of intimidation of trade unions or their leaders are equally off-limits as these constitute not only a violation of trade union/human rights but a threat to our hard-won democracy.
“In light of the foregoing, the Governor is advised to steer off labour matters in the state.
“As a brand-new Governor, he should have his priorities. We would hate to think that authorising the harassment of trade union leaders is one of them.
“As for the police, they should retrieve their honour if they can, by not lending themselves to the performance of dirty jobs in contravention of their oath of office.
In the same vein, the congress has joined trade unions, civil society allies and patriotic Nigerians in Edo State in calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of police officers responsible for the death of Comrade Kaduna Eboidogbin, former NLC State Council Chairman in Edo State.
It said: “The explanation offered by the officers involved in this heinous crime is lame and ridiculous as well insults our collective intelligence.
“Accordingly, nothing short of immediate arrest, detention and prosecution for murder of the officers involved will satisfy us.
“The untimely death of Comrade Kaduna Eboidogbin is a tragedy we are yet to come to terms with.
“The Edo State Police Command, and indeed, the Nigeria Police Force should resist the urge for a cover-up as has often been the case when their officers over-shoot their brief.
“The Nigeria Police Force stands to gain nothing when it protects bad eggs or nurtures them in its fold in the name of managing its public image.
“Indeed, it loses everything by so doing including its essence. It is reason why we urge the Commissioner, Edo State Police Command, CP Umoru Ozigi to seize the momentum by acting with transparent courage, knowing full well life has been snuffed out via wilful conduct.
“In terms of dealing with erring officers we urge the police to borrow a leaf from the Nigerian Army.
“Finally, we urge the Police to take seriously our advice before it faces another backlash from the public”.
