Tottenham defeated Manchester United 4-3 in a thrilling Carabao Cup quarterfinal match thanks to a brace from Dominic Solanke, moving them closer to their first trophy since 2008.
Solanke’s second goal in the 54th minute, which followed his first half goal and Dejan Kulusevski’s attempt 46 seconds into the second half, put Spurs in a commanding lead.
But after making two mistakes that led to a nerve-wracking conclusion, Fraser Forster, Tottenham’s backup goalie, hit the self-destruct button.
After Forster’s pass out from the back was intercepted and Amad Diallo blocked his clearance, Joshua Zirkzee, the first Man United substitute, tapped in to make it 3-2 with 20 minutes remaining.
Altay Bayindir protested, but with two minutes remaining, skipper Son Heung-min scored straight from a corner as Ange Postecoglou’s team was on the verge of collapse.
Ruben Amorim was left to pick up the pieces after Spurs advanced to the semi-finals, and Jonny Evans’ header in stoppage time was reduced to mere consolation.
