The Naira depreciated against the dollar on Friday at the foreign exchange market to end the week on a negative note.
FMDQ data showed that the weakened to N1678.87 per dollar on Friday from the N1639.50 exchange rate on Thursday.
This represents a N39.37 depreciation against the dollar compared to N1678.87 exchanged on Thursday.
Meanwhile, at the parallel market, the naira gained N10 to exchange at N1740 per dollar on Friday compared to N1750 recorded the previous day.
The development comes as Foreign Exchange transactions turnover surged astronomically to $1403.76 million on Friday from $244.96 million on Thursday, according to FMDQ data.

Tragedy struck at Church of the Brethren (EYN) Moduganari in Maiduguri, Borno State, when a pastor, Reverend Alaku Vincent, suddenly slumped and died during a child dedication on Sunday.
According to social media reports on Sunday, Vincent was in the midst of the ceremony when he collapsed and lost consciousness.
Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The cause of death has not been officially disclosed.
Church members and colleagues took to social media to mourn the loss of their beloved pastor.
The District Church Secretary of Church Brethren of Nigeria, Timothy Hammajam, in a Facebook post, described the deceased as “a visionary leader with focus.”
He added, “KBC DCM 2003 graduating class will ever miss your elderly and prophetic words. May God comfort EYN and your family.”
A church member with the Facebook name Prince Malikson Papaman shared a tribute: “Just a few hours ago, he stood confidently on the altar… passionately shepherding his flock.
“His powerful message still resonates in my mind, as he emphasized the importance of family unity in worship.
“Little did I know it would be his final sermon.”
Papaman described Vincent’s departure as leaving an “unfillable void” but took comfort in the Bible’s assurance that his death is but a sleep.
He concluded, “Rest in eternal peace, Rev. Vincent Alaku. Until we meet again.”

A 55-year-old woman, identified only as Ifeoma, reportedly died shortly after collapsing while sharing a testimony at the Ministry Church in the Ejigbo area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Online learnt that the incident, which occurred around 8:48 am during Sunday service on September 8, 2024, ultimately led to her death a few minutes later.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to PUNCH Online on Wednesday.
The 55-year-old woman had allegedly gone to the front of the church, singing songs of gratitude as she prepared to give her testimony when she suddenly collapsed.
Hundeyin said that the 55-year-old was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
He stated, “The Zonal accountant of the church in Ejigbo came to the station and reported that during testimony hour in the church, while the service was on, Ifeoma came out singing songs to give her testimony when she suddenly slumped.
“She was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital but was referred to the General Hospital in Isolo, where she was confirmed dead.
“Based on the report, detectives were detailed to visit the hospital with the complainant. On getting there, they were told that the husband and family of the deceased had taken the corpse to Anambra State, where she came from for burial.”

A 29-year-old man, Anuoluwapo Aderemi, collapsed and later passed away while travelling on a commercial bus from Papalanto Motor Park in Ogun State to Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
Our correspondent learnt that the incident occurred on Tuesday at a filling station in Itori around 7:45 pm.
The command’s spokesperson, Odutola Omolola, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Wednesday and stated that the deceased’s family had been informed.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the bus driver, Akeem Olorode, reported the incident to the Ewekoro Divisional Police Headquarters.
Odutola said, “The driver was en route to Ibadan with a bus that seats 18 passengers, but was carrying only 15 travellers when they departed from Papalanto.
“At around 7:00 pm, the driver stopped at a filling station in Itori to refuel. While filling the tank, other passengers alerted him that one of the passengers was acting strangely and had become unconscious.”
As other passengers reportedly made desperate attempts to administer first aid, PUNCH Metro learnt that the traveller collapsed and passed away inside the bus.
Upon receiving the report, Odutola stated that police detectives from the division were sent to the scene, where they found the deceased along with other passengers.
She added, “It was later revealed that the deceased was a resident of Ibadan. He was transported to a state hospital in Ifo, where a doctor on duty confirmed his death.

A commercial tricycle operator, otherwise known as ‘Keke’ rider, whose identity is yet to be known, on Thursday slumped and died in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
PUNCH Online gathered that the incident occurred at a location by Okorodudu Junction near the popular Old Airport Junction in Uvwie.
Eyewitnesses said that the tricylist slumped a few seconds after hurriedly parking his tricycle and heading to a local roadside food vendor in the locality.
One of the witnesses, Martins Emuobonuvie, told journalists that “the man parked his Keke and wanted to eat before he fell and stopped all forms of movements.”
Speaking further, Emuobonuvie stated that “the policemen who rushed to the scene said he was dead, and they couldn’t rush him to the hospital.”
Another witness, a motorist, Emeka Ebube, expressed concern that policemen from the nearby Enerhen Divisional Police Station could not rush the deceased to the hospital.
“He (the deceased Keke operator) could have survived if he was given medical attention,” Ebube said.
It was however gathered that a team of policemen later evacuated the remains of the late commercial tricycle operator from the spot of the incident “after calling relations of the deceased”.
The state Police Public Relations Officer SP Bright Edafe, could not be reached for comments on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
