DANIEL DAUDA, Jos
In a bit to boost personnel morale for effective service delivery, about 16 personnel of the Nigeria Army 3 Division, Jos, have received electric motorcycles as a reward for their exceptional performance in service.
Daily Champion reports that the decision to provide electric motorcycles to deserving soldiers was a strategic move to reduce dependence on fossil fuels by personnel, while also underscoring the Division’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
The beneficiaries of the noble gesture were within ranks, cutting across units and formation of the Army.
The symbolic presentation of electric motorcycles was held Wednesday at the 3 Division headquarters, Maxwell Kolbe Cantonment, Rukuba Barracks, Jos.
Speaking during the ceremony, General Officer Commanding (GOC) and Commander Operation Safe HAVEN (OPSH), Major Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar confirmed the initiative aligns with the current drive of the acting chief of Army staff, Lieut. Gen. Olufemi Oloyede which highlights the importance of sound administration and the welfare of troops.
He also acknowledged the initiative builds upon efforts initiated in 2022 under the leadership of the previous GOC, Major General AB Ibrahim, wherein deserving personnel were similarly rewarded.
According to the GOC, electric motorcycles which have a maximum speed of 40 kilometers per hour, can cover a distance of 100 km when fully charged for a period of 2 hours.
“It is both efficient and eco-friendly; and will serve as a sustainable mode of transportation within Maxwell Khobe Cantonment whilst helping to minimize the Division’s carbon footprint and supporting a cleaner, greener Nigeria.
“To further achieve the objective of the initiative which amongst others includes reducing the cost of transportation to personnel within the cantonment, especially to work, a charging room has been constructed at the Headquarters where personnel could easily charge the electric motorcycles while at work”, he noted
The GOC further revealed the Division recently benefited from various interventions by Army Headquarters aimed at enhancing troops’ welfare, including the renovation and construction of new accommodations, the construction of new office complexes, and the provision of resources to enable personnel to effectively fulfill their duties.
“The initiative to present the electric motorcycle to the Division’s best-performing personnel is a further testament to the Acting Chief of Army Staff’s commitment to prioritizing troops’ welfare as always.”
He averred that the recognition of hard work to personnel would continue in phases in 3 Division as it has now been institutionalised based on the foundation laid by his predecessor.
He encouraged troops to maintain their dedication to service and excellence, adding that “hard work will be duly recognized and rewarded.
The GOC also rewarded Warrant Officer, Awo Umar who retired from active service, while Warrant Officer Fidelis Ibrahim on behalf of the electric motorcycles beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude to the COAS and GOC for the rewards, saying it spurred them to redouble their efforts in service.

Two thieves suspected to have stolen phones, were on Friday, set on fire by an irate mob in Plateau State.
The incident was reported to have occurred in the Kabong community of Jos North Local Government Area in the early hours of the day.
According to eyewitness, the suspects were attacking passersby and road users with weapons, robbing them of phones and other valuables.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday by its spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred.
He noted that the Command had received a distress call from a citizen, reporting that a group of yet-to-be-identified cult members invaded the community, attempting to rob law-abiding citizens of their belongings.
He however stated that upon arrival of the police, the angry mob had pursued the invaders, attacked them, and set two individuals ablaze.
“While the police strongly condemn the activities of armed robbers and cultists, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, equally condemns the execution of jungle justice. As a civilised society, citizens are urged to hand over suspects to the relevant security agencies to ensure justice is served in accordance with the Plateau State Penal Code.
“The CP warns that any individual or group found engaging in jungle justice will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the statement added.
Residents of Jenta Adamu, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, have lynched some cult members causing mayhem in the area.
DAILY POST gathered that the incident occurred on Friday morning when the suspected cult members invaded the community, attempting to rob residents of their belongings.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Plateau State Police Command, Alfred Alabo confirmed this in a statement made available to DAILY POST.
The PPRO said prior to the incident, the Command received a report through a distress call from a concerned citizen of the area, that “at approximately 09:20 am, a group of yet to be identified cult members had invaded their community and were attempting to rob law abiding citizens of their belongings”.
“In response to the call, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police immediately ordered the Divisional Police Officer, “A” Division Jos, to deploy Police officers and detectives to the scene and begin investigation into the matter.
“Upon arrival, our team discovered that an angry Mob had taken matters into their own hands and pursued the invaders, mobbed them and set them ablaze.
“The Police in collaboration with the leadership of Jos North Local Government Area have evacuated the burnt bodies from the scene and deposited them at the hospital morgue.
“Upon intensifying our investigation into the incident, Two Locally Fabricated Pistols, believed to belong to the unidentified cult members, were recovered from the scene”, the statement added.
The Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission on Friday called for collaboration with religious leaders to help stem the tide of gender-based violence in the state.
The Commission said it has treated 163 cases since its establishment in one year, noting that 13 out of the cases are pending in court while one conviction has been secured.
Chairperson of the Commission, Olivia Dazyam disclosed this while briefing journalists in Jos, saying, “Working with religious leaders would change the narrative for us.
“We use this opportunity to appeal to our people, particularly religious leaders, as I have always said, their position is such a privileged one that they can help solve the challenges that we currently face on the Plateau as far as social welfare and protection is concerned.
“Possibly because of our religious orientation and we come around with issues of forgiveness; for example; don’t say it so that you will not disgrace your family.
“The culture of silence is eating us deep on the Plateau; therefore working with religious leaders on the Plateau to change the narrative is very critical.
“As I speak to you now, the Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission has been able to from February 2024 to November 2024 received and treated one hundred and sixty-three (163) cases consisting of rape, abandonment of parental responsibility, child trafficking, sexual and gender-based violence, sale of children, and sale of pregnancy.
“So far, we have thirteen cases pending in court and we have secured one conviction.
“Also, the commission was able to retrieve children who were trafficked outside the state’ and even abroad back to the state.
“The provisions of the Gender and Equal Opportunities law in sections 26 (1) and (3) prohibit all forms of violence with specific emphasis on women and girls.
“Section 20 of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law makes it unlawful to abandon spouse or children, while section 17 of the same law prohibits spousal battery.
“The punishment for these offences upon conviction is a term of not less than three years and a fine; not exceeding two hundred thousand naira or both”, Dazyam explained.
“With these, it can be said that the state is not lacking in legal framework to penalize but it becomes increasingly difficult for the law to take effect when victims arid their relatives prefer not to seek justice.
“On a daily basis, the cases received at the commission are so disturbing that it leaves us to wonder what has happened to our humanity.
“The situation is such that children have lost confidence in parents and caregivers. We who are communal in nature, who together ought to bring up children to become, better citizens have abandoned our responsibility and children, are left to their fate.
“Let me assure you, that the Gender Commission with the backing of the state government will not rest on its oars to ensure that our society returns to normal where there is respect for human rights and the dignity of the woman is preserved”, she assured.
The Governor of Plateau State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, has assured residents of the state’s maximum safety, following the report of an explosion.

However, in a statement by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, Governor Mutfwang dismissed such reports, describing them as false.

Mutfwang recalled that security agencies, including the anti-bomb squad from the Police Command in Plateau responded swiftly, conducted a search operation at the scene and cordoned it.
“After an exhaustive inspection, no evidence of any explosive device was found,” he stated.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring an enduring security across the state, and to work tirelessly to restore peace and stability in the area.
He also appealed to the people to channel their efforts in supporting the government’s mission for sustainable peace and prosperity.

The general manager of the club, Habila Mutla, stated that the claims were false.
Mutla disclosed this in a press statement on Friday.
The statement reads: “Plateau United officially debunks claims making the rounds on social media and other news platforms that licences belonging to its newly registered players have been withdrawn as a result of outstanding salary debts, saying it is completely false.
“Management’s position is clear that the matter decided via the Players and Clubs Status Committee has nothing to do with outstanding salary debts but relates to the transfer of a certain player from Gombe State-based football club, Yarma Light.
“The said player signed for Plateau United FC on loan three seasons ago, just before the current General Manager, Habila Hosea
Mutla, came on board.
“Findings reveal that the said player’s agent had written an agreement with Plateau United FC that a two million naira compensation upon the completion of the player’s deal will be paid, an agreement said to be violated by the club to eventually attract a five million naira compensation verdict by the Players and Clubs Status Committee.
“Plateau United’s attempt to appeal the verdict failed and, as a result, was compelled to meet the demands of it.”

Officials at the Olusegun Obasanjo Model School, however, arrived at the time of filing this report.
NAN reports that the intending voters were seen at the various polling units waiting to exercise their franchise.
Mrs Sabina Dawam, the official in charge of the school in Hwolshe, attributed the delay to lack of vehicles at the Local Government to transport voting materials and the officials.
Mr Amos Badung, a voter, expressed dissatisfaction over the late arrival of officials at the school’s polling unit, saying the delay could cause disenfranchisement of some voters.
Badung said as at 9:00 a.m., the election was yet to commence.
A voter, Mrs Mary Dalyop, at the St Jarlath’s Primary School 1 polling unit in Kugiya, told NAN, that she had been at the polling unit since 7:30 am, awaiting the arrival of the officials to commence the exercise at 8: 00 a.m.
Dalyop however, said she did not want to return home because she was not sure if she would be able to come back to cast her vote if she left for home.
NAN reports that voting began early in some areas such as Zawan A and B, Kuru, Du, and Rayfield, all in Jos South.

The Plateau State Police Command has said it has designed an effective security template suitable for guaranteeing a hitch-free atmosphere for the upcoming local government elections.
The command also stated that it has carried out pre- and post-election threat evaluations and has commenced the deployment of personnel to identified flashpoints and vulnerable areas to preempt any potential threats to the smooth conduct of elections in the seventeen local government areas of the state.
This was disclosed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, in Jos, the State Capital, on Monday.
He said, “We are glad to inform you that Plateau State Command has concluded all arrangements, and we are well prepared for the forthcoming elections.
“The CP wishes to warn mischievous elements whose perception of democracy involves the application of violence to reconsider, as law enforcement under his watch is committed to dealing with such characters within the dictates of the law.
“In the same vein, all political actors and their supporters are advised to avoid actions or speeches that could inflame the political atmosphere. Above all, they should cooperate with the Police and other security agencies in our drive to guarantee a peaceful election process.
“Religious leaders meddling in the election process through unguarded utterances should also desist from such actions.”
The State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, held a meeting today with all critical stakeholders within the State to ensure that all hands are on deck for the smooth conduct of the forthcoming elections.
In attendance were heads of other security agencies, religious and traditional leaders, market organizations, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, political parties, and others.
Adesina assured all citizens of the State of the Command’s optimal commitment to ensuring a peaceful exercise in the State.
“We also wish to inform the public that quasi-security outfits/help groups such as the Neighborhood Watch, Vigilante, etc., are not part of the election security arrangement and are therefore advised to steer clear of election venues and cast their votes at their respective polling units.”
The CP further called on parents, guardians, traditional and religious leaders, youths, and the public to monitor and encourage their children, wards, and subjects to be law-abiding and resist the temptation to be used to cause disturbances of public peace or violate the law during and after the election.
“All electoral observers, both national and international, are advised to ensure that they carry appropriate identification tags issued by the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) and cooperate with security agencies to ensure their safety during the process.
“We call on members of the media to note that they have a pivotal role to play in this historic moment in our lives.”
He added, “In the past, Plateau State has recorded a series of crises that have set the state back and hampered economic activities.
“Therefore, as partners and stakeholders in election security, our concerted efforts must be geared towards ensuring the peaceful conduct of the upcoming elections on the Plateau and providing unbiased reportage of the events as they unfold.”
He called on members of the fourth estate of the realm to work in partnership with the police, keeping in mind the security and peace of the citizens of the State.
“We also advise that members of the press and those on essential services carry a valid means of identification while on duty to avoid any form of embarrassment from our men on duty.”
“In a bid to ensure the safety and security of the election process, vehicular movement within the seventeen local government areas will be restricted from 12:00 am (midnight) to 6:00 pm on Wednesday, 09/10/2024.
“We, therefore, urge all residents of the State to go out and exercise their franchise without fear of molestation or intimidation of any kind and to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the electoral process,” he admonished.
Many houses have been destroyed, displacing residents, due to heavy rainfall in the Langtang South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Reports indicate that the rains, which began on Friday, October 4, 2024, persisted until the early hours of Sunday, October 6, 2024, resulting in widespread flooding across several communities, particularly in Sabo Gari, where numerous households have been left homeless.
A resident of Angwan Bwarat in the Sabon Gida community, Mr Nandul Solomon, confirmed the incident to The PUNCH in Jos, the state capital, on Sunday.
Solomon stated that the incident had plunged the community into confusion and panic, with many affected residents stranded and desperately seeking shelter.
He said, “The flood didn’t claim lives, but it was huge. Right now, over 80 households have had their houses destroyed by the flood, rendering many others homeless.
“The displaced persons are currently searching for where to stay, while others are staying with neighbours, friends, or relatives.”
A community leader in the Sabo Gari community, Mr Yintim Nimilam, lamented the plight of the people while calling on the state government and other public-spirited individuals to come to their aid.
“We appeal to the government and relevant authorities to come to our rescue. The incident is rather unfortunate. As it is, several persons are currently displaced and staying with relatives, and many others don’t know what to do about the situation that has befallen them,” Nimilam, the Secretary of the Sabo Gari Development Association, pleaded.
When contacted, the Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, Sunday Abdu, said the agency was aware of the flood incident, adding that he had deployed officials to the affected communities to assess the situation.
“We have received distress calls regarding the incident of flooding in Langtang South. So, I have detailed my staff to go and assess the situation tomorrow (Monday) to enable us to know the next line of action to take,” Abdu said.
Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, says he remains loyal to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, dismissing rumours of him joining the All Progressives Congress, APC.
A social media report had gone viral containing an electronic flex banner with the governor’s image suggesting his defection to the APC.
Responding in a statement, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Gyang Bere, described the reports as misleading.
According to him, the governor firmly upholds the party’s values and the trust placed in him by the people of Plateau State who overwhelmingly elected him in the 2023 elections under the PDP.
Bere said while this baseless rumour does not warrant a formal response, it has become necessary to dispel any misconceptions that may mislead the public and to preserve the governor’s integrity.
He added that the governor acknowledged that the people of Plateau State regard the PDP as their trusted political platform for leadership and the notion that he has contemplated leaving it for APC is entirely false.
He urged the public to disregard the actions of the detractors, with the sole aim of tarnishing the governor’s reputation for their selfish political gain, adding that Governor Mutfwang has not authorized anyone to create or circulate any such flex banner, and he remains steadfast in his commitment to the PDP and the people of Plateau State.
“This orchestrated falsehood, crafted by certain individuals and executed by mischief-makers, is aimed at creating division between the governor and the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), as well as his dedicated supporters in Plateau State,” the statement read.
