The German soccer team announced on Wednesday that Borussia Dortmund had fired coach Nuri Sahin following Tuesday’s shocking 2-1 Champions League loss to Bologna, which extended their losing streak to four games in all competitions.
“Borussia Dortmund have released head coach Nuri Sahin with immediate effect following an internal analysis of recent sporting developments,” said the club in a statement.
The Ruhr Valley squad, last year’s Champions League finalists, led the Italians in the fifteenth minute but conceded two goals in two minutes in the second half.
They have also dropped to 10th place in the Bundesliga and are now in danger of missing out on Europe’s top club championship the following season after losing all three of their 2025 league games.
“After four defeats in a row and only one win from the last nine games … we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation,” Dortmund managing director Lars Ricken said in the statement.
“This decision also hurts me personally, but it was no longer avoidable after the game in Bologna.”
Sahin, 36, leaves the club just a little over half a year after being appointed to replace Edin Terzic as the new coach.
The former Turkey international, who was born in Germany, played for the team as a youngster and senior.
After two years as a coach at Antalyaspor in Turkey, he joined Dortmund as an assistant coach in 2024.
He had committed to a deal through 2027. The team stated that the manager for this week’s league matchup versus Werder Bremen would be announced shortly.
