Sam Morsy has drawn the ire of the LGBTQ+ community. The Ipswich Town captain, a practicing Muslim, refused to wear the rainbow armband during the match against Crystal Palace (0-1), during the week dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion in English football.
A decision taken for personal religious reasons and which the club, recently promoted to the Premier League, has denied being associated with.
“Ipswich Town Football Club is committed to being a fully inclusive club that welcomes everyone. We proudly support the Premier League’s Rainbow Laces campaign and support the LGBTQ+ community to promote equality and acceptance,” said the spokesperson for the British team.
While the Egyptian international is somewhat in turmoil, he is not the first to have refused to wear this particular armband, although he is the only one this season. Anel Ahmedodzic also refused to wear it last season with Sheffield United.
