In yet another blow to Democrats, Donald Trump will begin his presidency with a trifecta of Republican control in Washington. The GOP not only regained control of the White House and the Senate but also managed to hold onto a narrow majority in the House, the Associated Press called late Wednesday, more than a week after voters headed to the polls.

The victory in the House will have significant ramifications for the start of Trump’s second term, allowing the President-elect and his allies to push forward with their full legislative agenda now that both chambers of Congress are under Republican control until at least 2026. While their priorities are still being outlined, Republicans will be positioned to confirm Trump’s appointees, pass tax reform, fund border security, overhaul the Affordable Care Act, and legislate other parts of their agenda.

Republicans were able to maintain control of the House thanks to wins in key battleground races where they defended vulnerable seats and expanded their reach in Democratic-held districts. In Pennsylvania, Republicans flipped two competitive seats despite a tough campaign from Democrats seeking to capitalize on high-profile issues such as reproductive rights. Republicans also flipped a competitive seat in Colorado and an open seat in Michigan, the latter after Democratic incumbent Rep. Elissa Slotkin ran in the state’s Senate race, which she won. In Arizona, Iowa, and Nebraska—which had some of the most competitive 2024 House races—GOP incumbents appear to have fended off strong challenges from Democrats. And Republicans look to buffer their margin in California, where votes continue to be counted in several close races, while the GOP could flip another seat in Alaska, where the ranked-choice race for the state’s only congressional district remains too early to call.

While Republicans are celebrating their victory, the party’s razor-thin majority—even thinner after multiple members vacate their seats to join the Trump administration—and internal divisions could create challenges in the years ahead. House Speaker Mike Johnson, who was with Trump on Election Night and ascended to the role after a tumultuous leadership battle last year, faces the difficult task of unifying the caucus as it prepares to tackle major legislative issues. One of the GOP’s most pressing concerns will be the potential for political gridlock if the party’s far-right members clash with moderates on key pieces of legislation, particularly on issues like government spending.

But now that Republicans control the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives, they have a historic opportunity to reshape key aspects of U.S. policy. Republican leaders will push for additional tax cuts, particularly for businesses and high-income earners, building on the tax cuts passed during Trump’s first term and making them permanent. One of Trump’s signature issues, immigration reform, is also expected to take center stage. Republicans are likely to seek additional funding for border security and enforcement measures, including the construction of a border wall and tighter restrictions on immigration.

In March, Johnson said House Republicans would pursue “aggressive” and “radical changes” in the first 100 days of a Republican trifecta. He said on Oct. 28 that there would be “massive” health care changes in America. “Health care reform’s going to be a big part of the agenda. When I say we’re going to have a very aggressive first 100 days agenda, we got a lot of things still on the table,” he said.

Republicans could push to repeal or overhaul the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a central campaign promise for Trump and the GOP, potentially replacing it with a more market-driven system. Republicans could also press forward with conservative social policies, including measures limiting abortion access and enhancing religious freedom protections—setting up a clash with Democrats in the coming months. (Trump has lately said that abortion policy should be set by the states.)

Still, the road ahead will not be smooth. Even with a Republican trifecta, the GOP will face intense scrutiny, particularly from Democrats and progressive groups, who will continue to fight for their policies in the courts, the Senate, and in state legislatures.

Kwankwaso visits Otti, urges police to maintain professionalism

Former governor of Kano State and former presidential candidate of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has visited the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti in his country home, Nvosi Isiala Ngwa South LGA.

The visit, which took place on Saturday, was to console him on the death of former Governor of Abia State, Ogbonnaya Onu.

Kwankwaso who arrived Abia State with some of his close associates, was received by Governor Otti, even as the visit coincided with reception held for 15 indigenes of Abia State who recently graduated from the 6th Regular Course of Nigeria Police Academy, Kano and now commissioned into the Nigeria Police Force.

While advising the new graduates, the former Kano State Governor urged them to uphold professionalism in the discharge of their duties and to maintain the fear of God.

In his own address, Governor Alex Otti congratulated the new graduates from the Nigeria Police Academy on their achievements and urged them to remain good ambassadors of Abia State and to avoid unprofessional conducts.

He also thanked Kwankwaso for the visit, describing him as a patriotic Nigerian.

Responding on behalf of his colleagues, the leader of the police graduates, ASP Ochiabuto Uche Ejike promised to remain good ambassadors of the Nigeria Police Force, Abia State and Nigeria and thanked Governor Otti for the honour done to them.

No further details of the Kwankwaso visit had been made public by the Abia State government as of the time of this report.

Mamelodi Sundowns enjoyed a night out in Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday when they defeated Royal AM 2–1.

It is all thanks to Siphelele Mkhulise and Khuliso Mudau, who netted the winning goals to help the Brazilians maintain their perfect start and reclaim the top spot on the league tally.

The visitors looked more dangerous and comfortable on the ball in the second stanza, forcing Williams into action quite a few number of times. It didn’t take enough time before Bafana Ba Style regained their control and picked up where they left off with creating clear-cut chances.

On the hour mark, Neo Maema and Siyabonga Mabena were introduced. Mabena looked settled as he saw many chances in front of goal, but just couldn’t find the back of the net.

There were more chances from Masandawana in front of goal and their aggression finally paid off when Mudau made it two after Shalulile’s shot was unsuccessful.

Edo guber: Maintain neutrality – Jonathan tells INEC, security personnel

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and security personnel to create a level-playing field to ensure free and fair polling in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State.

Jonathan, who made this call in a statement on Thursday, sued for peace before, during, and after the pools, urging political actors and stakeholders to work towards deepening the nation’s democracy by prioritising the peace and security of Edo state.

According to the statement by his media adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, the ex-president stressed that the Edo election places a moral burden on state agencies especially the police and the INEC to rise to their constitutional responsibilities as independent arbiters in our democratic process.

He added that for democracy to endure, elections must be devoid of all forms of manipulation and state institutions must guarantee peaceful, credible and transparent elections.

Jonathan further charged the election management body to live up to expectations as an unbiased umpire and inspire confidence in all actors through a transparent voting process.

He said, “There is no doubt that loss of confidence in an election encourages political disputes, social unrest, voter apathy, increased polarization and other far-reaching consequences that could undermine development and democratic consolidation.

“As citizens of voting age in Edo State go to the polls for the governorship election on Saturday, September 21, 2024, I call on all political actors and stakeholders to work towards deepening the nation’s democracy by prioritizing peace and security of the state.

“Politicians must pursue their interests within the confines of the law and refrain from activities that could undermine the peace and stability of the state.

“It is encouraging that civil rule has endured in the Fourth Republic for 25 years but we should remind our people that democracy loses its value when citizens cannot exercise their political choices in a free and fair atmosphere.”

Makinde Inaugurates New Olubadan Palace, Says 11 LGAs To Maintain Edifice

Ahead of the formal coronation of the new Olubadan of Ibadan Land on Friday, July 12, 2024, the new Olubadan Palace was on Wednesday evening commissioned in Ibadan, by the Oyo State governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde.

LEADERSHIP reports that the new Palace project was initiated by the immediate-past administration of late Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Governor Makinde, who took to his verified social media handles on Wednesday night to disclose the development, thanked the late Governor Ajimobi; a former President of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief O. O. Bello; Chief Bayo Oyero, and all Ibadan indigenes, who contributed to make the project a reality.

He added that for the second phase of the palace, the State government will include renovating the Bower’s Tower in order to boost tourism in the State.

Makinde wrote: “This evening, we commissioned the new Olubadan Palace in Ibadan. The event gave us an opportunity to acknowledge and thank everyone who made it possible including former Governor Abiola Ajimobi who started it, the former President of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief O. O. Bello, Chief Bayo Oyero, and all Ibadan indigenes who contributed to make the project a reality.

“To maintain this new palace, we have established a process where all 11 local government councils in Ibadan will contribute to its upkeep on a monthly basis. For the second phase of the palace, we will also include renovating the Bower’s Tower, to boost tourism in our dear State. We are looking forward to the coronation of our Olubadan this Friday.”
