After escaping death in a vehicle accident, Victor Boniface returned and scored for Bayer Leverkusen in Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen, which ended in a 2-2 away tie.

In the 30th minute, Boniface, who was playing with a bandaged hand, put the champions ahead with a cutback from Jeremie Frimpong.

A day after scoring the game-winning goal in their victory against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, he was a passenger in a car accident on Sunday, sustaining minor injuries to his hand and foot.

As a result, he missed Wednesday’s Champions League 1-1 tie at Brest.

On the hour, Boniface, who has now scored six league goals this season, had an opportunity to score another, but Werder goalkeeper Michael Zetterer made an incredible save.

Instead, Werder equalised in the 74th minute with a strong header from Marvin Duksch.

Their happiness was short-lived, however Felix Agu, a teammate, miskicked badly for an own goal while under siege.

But Werder rallied once again, as Romano Schmid equalised in the 90th minute to steal a point.

At VfL Bochum on Sunday, Leverkusen is two points behind second-place Bayern Munich in third position with 15 points.

With a 3-1 victory over Freiburg, RB Leipzig leads the pack on 20.
