Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration in Lagos State has announced a partnership with 16 traditional rulers to strengthen advocacy against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the state.
According to reports, this initiative by the State’s Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) aligns with the 202416 Days of Activism to Eliminate Gender-Based Violence, which began on November 25.
Speaking at the launch of the advocacy campaign at the Oniwaya of Iwaya Palace in the Yaba Local Council Development Area, DSVA Executive Secretary, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, highlighted the significance of leveraging international observance days and collaborating with traditional leaders to address gaps in awareness and action against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.
She explained that the selection of the 16 kingdoms was based on data-driven analysis, targeting areas with high incidences of violence, low case reporting, and limited engagement throughout the year.
“To mark this year’s international day, the agency is partnering with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption programme with support from the European Union and implemented by the International IDEA to engage 16 Traditional Rulers in the state to assist in the advocacy.
“We are also using these events to spotlight 16 traditional rulers in the state for their support in the fight against SGBV,” she said.
The Oniwaya of Iwaya Kingdom, Oba Suleiman Owolabi Oloko, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration and other sponsors for making his kingdom the starting point of the 16-day campaigns.
The Lagos State Government has refuted claims that it has banned the sale and distribution of sachet water, popularly known as pure water.
This came following reports circulating that the government of the state’s ban on pure water would take effect from 2025.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, dismissed the rumours as misinformation in a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday.
He addressed a viral video showing individuals destroying sachet water packs at factories and on buses, clarifying that the individuals were not enforcement officers from any Lagos State agency or ministry. Instead, they were officers from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
“The individuals in question are enforcement officers of NAFDAC, targeting sachet water that doesn’t comply with NAFDAC regulations, in the interest of public health and safety,” Wahab explained partly.
The commissioner reaffirmed that Lagos State has no plans to ban sachet water and is instead focused on improving plastic waste management.
He highlighted the implementation of mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for producers of polyethene terephthalate (PET), sachets, and carrier bags of no less than 40 microns as part of the state’s environmental goals.
Wahab’s statement reassured the public of the government’s commitment to sustainability while addressing public health and environmental concerns. The clarification has been met with mixed reactions, with some applauding the government’s transparency and others expressing frustration over misinformation.

Amidst his wife’s saga with a blackmailer, the popular content creator Egungun of Lagos faces a cheating controversy following the leak of a private video.
The video surfaced hours after his wife, Pashotah, publicly addressed a blackmail attempt involving her husband’s private videos.
In the leaked clip making rounds on social media, Egungun of Lagos was seen brushing his teeth during a video call with an unidentified woman. At one point, the creator, dressed in shorts, flashed his private parts to the lady on the call.
This development has sparked widespread reactions online, with many questioning Egungun’s earlier image as a family-oriented man. It also casts a new light on his wife’s staunch defence of their marriage amid the blackmail drama.
In her earlier statement, Pashotah had dismissed the blackmailer’s threats and described her husband as loyal and committed. She emphasized their relationship’s foundation of trust, asserting that no scandal could tear them apart.
However, the leaked video has led to mixed reactions. While some criticized Egungun’s actions as a betrayal of his wife’s trust, others pointed to the possibility of the video being a misinterpretation or an old clip intended to tarnish his image.
Egungun of Lagos has yet to address the controversy, and his wife has not released any additional statements.

The Ebute Ero market in Lagos State, has been reportedly gutted with fire.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye on Saturday.
She noted that the fire broke out at the market, near the Police Station adjacent to Carter Bridge, Lagos Island, in the early hours of Saturday.
She however stated that the Swift response of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, prevented the fire from spreading and minimised the damages caused.
“While the fire has been extinguished, it resulted in the loss of several lock-up shops within the bungalow structures that trade in various tools and kitchenware,” the statement added.
Adeseye further noted that an enumeration is ongoing to determine the number of shops affected and the estimated value of the losses incurred.
A few days ago, several groups mounted campaigns, endorsing Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu to become the next governor of Lagos State.
DAILY POST reports that it started with the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, CONYL, which in a statement in Owerri, Imo State, endorsed the President’s son for the Lagos governorship seat in 2027.
According to the Coalition, Seyi Tinubu had on several occasions proven through his philanthropic gestures that he is a man who is selfless in all senses of the word.
“When there was flooding in Borno State, Mr Seyi and his team were there to sympathize and show support to those Nigerians whose property, homes and means of livelihood were destroyed by the flood.
“He gave a lot of gift items, food, home utensils, drugs and money to the affected persons during that period when the sad event took place,” the coalition said.
Also, the Lagos branch of the Middle Belt Youths joined the call in a press conference, with the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Middle Belt Forum, Dr Stanley Augustine Kavwam, as well as the group’s National Youth Leader, Capt. Brent Kane, urging Seyi to step up in 2027, describing him as the leader Lagos needs.
In the same vein, a socio-political organisation, Friends of Seyi Tinubu, FOST, endorsed Seyi Tinubu for the 2027 contest.
Describing him as a visionary leader with a rare blend of intellect, empathy, and strategic acumen, the group said Seyi Tinubu is the quintessential choice to drive Lagos state into a future defined by prosperity and innovation.
A statement by its president, Comr. Adejorin Tai Manuel, said Seyi Tinubu’s philanthropic contributions, leadership acumen, and commitment to societal progress is evidence of his readiness to serve as governor.
The development has been drawing reactions from different stakeholders.
First to quickly react was a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Joe Igbokwe, who voiced his opposition in a Facebook post, describing the endorsements as a ploy to undermine President Tinubu.
“Who are these faceless people pushing Seyi Tinubu for Lagos governor? This is a needless distraction. To pull PBAT down is their target. Ruling Lagos is not the job of boys,” Igbokwe wrote.
Similarly, a youth group under the aegis of the Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths rejected the endorsement, saying there was no vacancy for a non-indigene to occupy the Alausa Government House.
“Our attention has been drawn to the recent endorsement of Seyi Tinubu for Lagos governor by a group known as Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, CONYL, and the group is described as the umbrella body of all the youth groups drawn across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.
“The said Coalition sat in Owerri, Imo State and publicly issued the statement of endorsement.
“While we know Mr Seyi Tinubu has his democratic rights as a Nigerian, we condemn the ill-fated endorsement and describe it as anti-democracy and a deliberate move by some faceless individuals to deny indigenes of Lagos State the right to govern themselves in 2027.
“It is no longer news that since 1999, no true blood indigene of Lagos State has taken over the mantle of leadership in the State (except one), the marginalization which underscores the essence of democracy and an outright denial of the indigenes of Lagos State the right to govern themselves.
“We know as a fact that there will soon be vacancy in Osun State where Mr Seyi Tinubu can best exercise his democratic rights unhindered.
“And if the people of Owerri in Imo are also interested in benefiting from the experience Mr Seyi Tinubu has acquired in recent times, they can push him to succeed Governor Uzodinma.
“As for us there is no vacancy for non-indigenes in Lagos State in 2027. The marginalization is too much and the marginalization has led to the underdevelopment in the state,” the group said.
On its part, the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said that citizens would resist any attempts to impose Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, as the next governor of the state.
The state PDP spokesperson, Hakeem Amode, while rejecting the idea, said, “Lagos will not serve him.”
Amode asked whether governorship should become an inheritance, suggesting that it was inappropriate for a son to inherit such a role from his father.
He stressed that if the Tinubu camp were to resort to tactics similar to those used in Ondo and Edo states in the past, it would be met with resistance.
“Governorship is not a gift,” he stated.
Speaking to DAILY POST, a human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, described the endorsement as laughable, adding that it was a clear indication that the people of Lagos State were taken for granted.
He queried if Nigeria, particularly Lagos State, was practising a monarchical system of government, where a father would pass the baton of leadership to his son in a democratic society filled with eligible and competent citizens.
According to him, such a thing happens because there is no election, adding that what takes place in disguise of election is ‘selection.’
While noting that everyone has the right to contest for election, Adeyanju called on the political actors of Lagos State to rise.
“It is a laughable endorsement because they have underrated Lagos people. If they rate them, such calls would not even be arising.
“Is Lagos a monarchy state, where the Tinubu’s family is supreme? Is it that power is the birthright of the Tinubu’s family?
“Is there something that people don’t know that should be known about them? Because I just don’t understand and can’t explain it.
“It makes no sense that they underrated Lagos people. And it’s because elections don’t take place there, it’s just selection. And because strong political office holders are never held accountable by the people, that’s why things go the way they go.
“Nigeria is practising federalism and not monarchy where political powers are being inherited from the father to the son.
“It therefore behoves on the political actors of Lagos State to stand up and do what is right for the state,” he stated.
The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has voided the rape conviction of the Managing-Director of Optimal Cancer Care Foundation, Femi Olaleye
The appellate court on Friday ruled that the lower court erred in its judgment.
It thereafter discharged and acquitted Olaleye.
Recall that in October 2023, the Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Lagos convicted Olaleye on a two-count charge of defilement of a child and sexual assault by penetration.
Following his conviction, Justice Rahman Oshodi had sentenced Olaleye to life imprisonment.

The studio section of Radio Nigeria at Plot 35, Ikoyi Road, Lagos was on Wednesday night gutted by fire.
The Lagos State fire service Director, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the development in a statement on the agency’s X handle.
She said a combined team of the Federal Fire Service and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were able to put out the fire.
She stated that the cause of the fire is yet unknown.
The statement reads, “Firefighters from Dolphin, Ebute Elefun and Oba On iTunes Fire Stations were first responders who met the fire well-alight due to the substances involved in the material composition of the studio section
“The public is however assured that the collaborative efforts with the Federal Fire Service and other Emergency Responders including the Nigerian Police has put the situation under control and confined it to the studio section of the U-shape one storey building where it emanated”.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has suspended his Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, Mr. Wale Ajetunmobi.
The announcement was made in a statement released on Tuesday morning by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile.
According to the statement, Ajetunmobi’s suspension was prompted by the misrepresentation of facts regarding a past incident, which he posted on his personal “X” account.
“The Governor wishes to state categorically that his administration frowns at any form of extra judicial punishment and will not be a part of any such action. That is not who we are. That is not our way,” the statement added.
The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday deliberated on the 2025 appropriation bill of ₦3.005 trillion, which Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented to the lawmakers last Thursday.
Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who chaired the session, referred the bill to a joint committee on appropriation and finance for further review, instructing them to report back within one month.
Earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh, presented a summary of the proposed expenditure, detailing the breakdown of items in the budget.
While raising concerns over the projection of N408 billion deficit financing in the budget, Olumoh, who noted that loans are good when used for the actual purposes, added: “We have to be cautious about it. We need to have a sustainable and pragmatic way of financing our budget so that we don’t rely solely on loans.
“So I would suggest that we look at a realistic budget and ways to finance it using alternatives like the Public Private Partnership models.
“I also want to implore my colleagues that for the purpose of the 2025 budget, we need to properly scrutinise it to prevent wastage.”
He commended the government for its intentions as stipulated in the budget estimate.
A Nigerian lady has sparked outrage online as she recounts a traumatic experience at a Lagos church, where she was labeled a witch after wearing red pants to Sunday school and forced into a deliverance session.
In a lengthy post shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), she detailed the disturbing incident, revealing how the Sunday school teacher singled her out for her choice of attire, accusing her of being a witch.
The child, who was around 7 or 8 years old at the time, was subjected to intense pressure to “confess,” despite not understanding what she was being accused of.
The ordeal ended with her mother, upon hearing the story, confronting the church in person, demanding accountability for the traumatic experience.
The lady shared her reflection on the lasting impact the event had on her: “I didn’t know what was happening. The Sunday school teacher kept saying, ‘confess, confess.’ I didn’t even know what to confess to, but if they had given me a script, I would have definitely run with it so they would leave me alone.”
She went on to express the emotional toll, saying, “The trauma sat with me for years. I lost interest in church that day. In my young mind, I thought if you cannot tell for sure who is a witch through your visions, then your visions are unserious. Since then, I just saw those people for what they are – clowns. Wicked clowns.”
The incident, which took place in a “highbrow” area of Lagos, has prompted concern from many who came across her post, with some sharing similar stories of trauma from religious institutions.
The lady highlighted the fact that many children in Nigeria are vulnerable to such experiences, especially when their families blindly accept the church’s narrative, leaving them without support.
See some reactions below:
@she_trades1: “All these door to door evangelists came to preach one Sunday, I wasn’t home but my sister was. They told her she has an evil spirit in her. They came next Sunday and not only did they apologize, I told them if I see them again, they’ll see the evil spirit in me.”
@Za_phayvrite: “One time I went to a church with my cousins as a yellow fine 8-year old, the pastor singled me out and started shouting ‘cease to operate’ on my head. Spun me so much but I didn’t fall. I went home reported to my Dad, and that was the last time we saw that church branch open.”
@Zeehnoh: “I’ve had terrible experiences with pastors! One told my mum that i and my siblings are witches and we’re the reason her business isn’t going fine. He made us fast three days straight without food or water.”
@NwokeMpunity: “That’s how a parent parents. You STAND UP FOR YOUR CHILD. The onus to defend and care for your child lies solely on you the parents, any help you get from outsiders should be considered a bonus.”
@yudychuku: “Most of us have experienced this. Those deliverance sessions are not pleasant, the trauma remains with you. Let’s not even talk about the feeling of being betrayed by your family. Mine turned to hatred. It took God’s intervention to forgive and let go.”
@Titan_Lumina: “I have a friend whose pastor is trying to spoil her life…the pastor tells her parents to cut her hair, saying she has “red and black witch”😕, the pastor tried to stop her from writing jamb but she found a way to write it, the pastor told her parents not to pay for her postutme.”
