After dismissing Julien Stéphan, Stade Rennais has announced the appointment of Argentinian Jorge Sampaoli as head coach.
Rennes thought that Julien Stéphan’s return home would be the remedy for Bruno Genesio’s sudden departure in 2023.
Unfortunately for the Red and Blacks, this comeback did not cure the Breton team’s ills. After a tenth place at the end of last season, Stéphan did no better than thirteenth this year, with 5 defeats in ten games (3 wins, 2 draws). A too insufficient accounting record, not to mention a very poor game, which earned him to be dismissed despite his status as a man close to the Pinault family.
To replace him, several names were mentioned. Rudi Garcia, Habib Beye, Igor Tudor, Wilfried Nancy and even Jorge Sampaoli were mentioned.
And to everyone’s surprise, it was the Argentinian who was chosen. “Jorge Sampaoli appointed coach of the professional team. Former coach of Olympique de Marseille, FC Seville and the Albiceleste Jorge Sampaoli has been appointed coach of the professional team of Stade Rennais F.C. The 64-year-old technician has signed a contract with the Red and Black until 2026.”
