In an interview with Clique on Canal+, Kylian Mbappé opened up about his decision to oppose the promotion of sports betting and junk food with the French national team. The PSG forward clarified that his stance was never about financial gain but about aligning with ethical values.
“People thought it was about money, but I haven’t earned a cent from my national team appearances. In fact, I lose money flying back from Madrid,” he joked, underlining that his actions were driven by principles rather than personal benefit.
Mbappé took issue with the team’s image rights charter, particularly its association with industries he finds harmful. “We represent the French team; we inspire. Promoting junk food and sports betting is contradictory to what we stand for, especially when many of us come from areas deeply affected by these issues,” he explained. His unwavering stance led him to refuse promotional activities, a decision he communicated directly to then-FFF president Noël Le Graët and head coach Didier Deschamps.
The French captain emphasized the importance of using his platform responsibly, especially given the societal influence of the national team. By taking this stand, Mbappé continues to showcase his commitment not just on the pitch but also to larger ethical and social issues, setting a standard for athletes worldwide.
