The House of Representatives, led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, has confirmed Olufemi Oluyede as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
According to reports, the confirmation followed the presentation of a report by Babajimi Benson, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence. The joint committee on Army and Defence had screened Oluyede on Wednesday.
Oluyede was appointed Acting COAS by President Bola Tinubu after the ill-health and subsequent passing of his predecessor, Taoreed Lagbaja.
President Tinubu had earlier sent a formal request to the House, seeking Oluyede’s confirmation as the substantive COAS. The letter was read during Tuesday’s plenary session by Speaker Abbas.

The Peoples Democratic Party in Abia State has announced the formation of a Shadow House of Assembly in the state, saying that it would be used to engender accountability in governance.
The Chairman of the party, Abraham Amah made the announcement during a PDP stakeholders’ meeting at the party’s secretariat in Umuahia on Tuesday, naming the member representing Obingwa East State constituency, Solomon Akpulonu, PDP as the Speaker of the Shadow House of Assembly.
The PDP Chairman who said his party would write a letter to the Abia State House of Assembly in the next 48 notifying it of the formation of the Shadow House of Assembly, urging the Abia State House of Assembly to comply with the PDP-formed Shadow Assembly.
“In line with democratic principles, we do hope that as soon the House of Assembly receives our letter, they will comply accordingly immediately,” said Amah.
He also said the PDP or the opposition are not behind the current state of insecurity in the state.
The Abia PDP also set up a reconciliation committee co-chaired by Abraham Amah and Peter Aguomba to reconcile all aggrieved party members and possibly bring back those who left in anger to other political parties after the 2023 polls.
According to him, the umbrella party is repositioning to reclaim Abia State in 2027.
“We are taking all these steps to return this political party to Government by 2027”.
The PDP Chairman commended the stakeholders and all members of the party in the State for keeping faith and urged them to sustain the unity.

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Leader Hakeem Jeffries won reelection Tuesday as the Democratic leader, receiving support from his colleagues despite the party’s inability to win back majority control of the chamber in the November election.
Jeffries of New York was chosen during an internal party vote of the House Democrats underway at the Capitol. Most of the Democratic leadership team is expected to be reelected for the new Congress.
In line to become the House speaker, Jeffries remains the highest ranking Black elected official in Congress, and the first to hold the job of party leader.

He fell short of being in place to win the gavel after Republicans swept to power alongside President-elect Donald Trump, winning control of the White House, the Senate and the House.
While the Democratic leader will be the party’s nominee for House speaker, the gavel is expected to go to Speaker Mike Johnson as Republicans continue to hold the majority in the new year.
Jeffries and the House Democratic leadership works as a team — a trio of younger generation leaders that took over when Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi stepped aside from leadership two years ago. Democratic Whip Katherine Clark of Massachusetts and Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar of California were all expected to win their reelections on Tuesday.
House Democrats picked up a few seats in hard-fought regions, including Jeffries’ home state of New York and in California. But they also lost seats elsewhere and failed to topple some GOP incumbents, and overall there was little change in the House.
Republicans under Johnson are left holding the majority by a so-slim margin — their numbers diminishing in the new year as Trump has tapped three GOP lawmakers, Elise Stefanik, Mike Waltz and Matt Gaetz, to serve in his administration. Some need to be confirmed by the Senate.
(NEWLAND, N.C.) — The Cartner family had known since last year that one of their farm’s Christmas trees would be headed to the White House this winter.
But then Hurricane Helene struck, unleashing a deadly deluge across western North Carolina, including Avery County, where Cartner’s Christmas Tree Farm has stood for decades. Though the farm lost thousands of trees to a mudslide, many more survived, including a 20-foot conical tree that dwarfs most of the others on the sprawling farm.
That one will soon be cut down, lifted by a crane and put on a truck bound for the nation’s capital.
“We wanted to really be an uplifting symbol for the other farmers and other people in western North Carolina that have experienced so many losses,” said Sam Cartner Jr., one of three brothers who owns the farm.
From the back of the farm property, where the White House tree is located, it’s hard to see the extent of Helene’s damage. Countless rows of dark green trees stand in formation, contrasting against the lighter, mossy green shade of the rolling hills. It’s mostly quiet, aside from chirping birds and rustling leaves.

As Cartner ventures back to the front of the property in his SUV, the damage from Helene comes into view. A section of one of the grassy hills looks like it was clawed out to expose the brown earth beneath it — the aftermath of a mudslide that took out between 5,000 to 6,000 trees, Cartner said. Luckily, those trees were smaller and not market-size, meaning it wasn’t an immediate problem for this harvest season, he said.
Culverts and gullies on the property were also washed out from the storm, making immediate access to certain parts of the farm treacherous. It took a few weeks to fill in the dirt roads twisting through the farm, Cartner said, but it could have been much worse.
“We’re looking forward to a relatively normal harvest,” Cartner said. “Others will have a much harder time.”
The biggest challenge for Christmas tree farmers across western North Carolina has been fixing infrastructure on their property, including roads, said Jennifer Greene, North Carolina Christmas Tree Association executive director. Despite tree losses on some farms, Greene said farmers across the region — who harvest between 4-5 million Christmas trees annually — are persevering. She doesn’t anticipate Helene’s damage drastically affecting this harvest season, but it’s still uncertain how the devastation will affect future seasons.
“They’re resourceful, and you know, so they’re going to find a way, you know, to make it happen,” Greene said of the area’s Christmas tree farmers. “I mean, they have to.”
Cartner’s parents, Sam and Margaret Cartner, founded the farm in 1959, where they grew Fraser firs, a tree species indigenous to the Appalachians. They later passed the farm on to Cartner Jr. and his two brothers.
The farm started off small, raising cows, cabbage and beans alongside the Fraser firs, Cartner said. The family initially planted their trees on the steepest field because they didn’t want to use up their best land for them, Cartner said.
Now, Cartner’s Christmas Tree Farm has grown to about 500 planted acres of land. Most of the farm’s business is selling wholesale to independent garden centers and stores around the country.
Their staffing operation is also much larger, as the farm employs temporary workers from Mexico to continue the year-round duties of maintaining the land, such as trimming trees. The task in recent days has been loading trees of various sizes into trailers ready to ship.
“We say we’ve touched a tree over 100 times by the time it gets to the consumer, and that’s all manual labor,” Cartner said.
All of that work led to Cartner’s Christmas Tree Farm being named the 2024 grand champion at the National Christmas Tree Association’s contest. Winning the competition traditionally means the champion will supply the White House’s official Christmas tree that year.
The visit to Cartner’s Christmas Tree Farm by White House staff was initially delayed because of damaged roads, Greene said. When the staff made their selection in late October, they adorned their tree of choice with a red, white and blue ribbon that was larger than a basketball, Cartner said.
The selected tree is about 25 years old and weighs between 400 to 500 pounds (180 to 230 kilograms) — so heavy that a crane will be brought in to bring the tree to its transport truck ahead of its travels to Washington. Its “wonderful verdant color” and short limbs were just a few reasons Cartner listed off that may have drawn White House staff to the tree, in addition to meeting certain size requirements for display.
Cartner and his family will present the tree to First Lady Jill Biden in front of the White House. Then, Cartner said they plan to return in December to see it decorated in the White House’s Blue Room.
While the buzz about the White House Christmas tree has been exciting, Cartner said he will be “glad to have all this behind us.” It’s been a tough year because of Helene, and harvest season is already difficult enough as is, he said.
“You’ve got to cut and ship that number of trees in two to three weeks, you put a hurricane on top of that, White House tree and all the activities, it gets almost overwhelming,” he said.
And work has already begun for next year. The farm has some obstacles to overcome, including finding places to buy seedlings after Helene devastated some greenhouses. There’s also paperwork to fill out for workers to return to the farm next season, as well as several orders to make for fertilizer and insecticide.
It’s a large-scale operation that has come a long way from when Cartner’s parents started it. While his parents wouldn’t have liked all the attention the farm has received, Cartner said they would be proud that they were representing western North Carolina during a time of hardship for many after Helene.
“They would want this tree to represent the faith, and hope, and love, and joy and family and generosity, all those good things of mankind that we need to stop and recognize,” he said.
While the U.S. presidential contest was decided fairly quickly—with the Associated Press calling Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris early Wednesday, Nov. 6, the morning after voters headed to the polls—in a number of downballot races, two weeks after Election Day, a clear winner has yet to emerge.
Republicans have already secured control of both chambers of Congress, but the margins of their majorities aren’t set.
In the House, the AP has yet to call five races—as of the end of Mon., Nov. 18. And while all the Senate races have been called, one is headed to a recount.

While all election results will be officially certified in the weeks to come, the AP and other media outlets use their own methodologies to “call” race winners based on tabulations of the votes that have been counted and projections about what remains to be counted. Here’s what to know about the races that are still undecided.
Republican challenger Nicholas Begich III is currently leading by about 7,000 votes over Democratic incumbent Rep. Mary Peltola in the race to represent Alaska’s lone congressional district. But elections in Alaska are conducted via ranked-choice voting (also known as instant runoff), which means that if no candidate achieves a majority of first-choice votes, multiple rounds of tabulation are required to reallocate votes from the least popular candidates to whomever each voter ranked as their next choice. Begich has received about 48.5% of first-round votes, according to the Alaska Division of Elections, with some absentee ballots still being counted, while ranked-choice results won’t be available until at least Nov. 20.
Begich, a businessman and the grandson and namesake of a former holder of the same seat and nephew of former Senator Mark Begich (D-Ala.), declared victory in the race on Saturday after Decision Desk HQ, another election race caller, called the race for him. Peltola, who is Yup’ik and made history as the first Alaska Native elected to Congress, beat Begich twice in 2022, during a special election following the death of longtime Rep. Don Young, a Republican who held the office for 49 years, and again in the regular election months later—both of which saw Begich eliminated before the final round as he ran alongside fellow Republican former Gov. Sarah Palin.

California’s size and its heavy reliance on vote-by-mail ballots has led to a notoriously slow vote count. In the state’s 13th U.S. House district, which includes parts of Fresno, the race between Republican incumbent John Duarte and his Democratic opponent former state assemblyman Adam Gray is still too close to call, as Duarte leads by about 2,000 votes, according to the AP, which estimates that 14% of ballots remain to be reported.
The race in the state’s 45th district, which includes parts of Orange County and Los Angeles County and has a significantly Asian American population, is even tighter. A former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2023 election, Tunde Omosebi, has been evicted from his Abuja residence following allegations of unpaid rent and other controversies.
The incident, captured in a viral video posted on X on November 15, showed a court enforcement team, supported by Police officers, evicting Omosebi from the property in a highbrow area of Abuja.
It was learnt that Omosebi’s tenancy had elapsed over four years ago and despite several attempts to recover outstanding payments, the politician reportedly refused to vacate the property.
In a letter dated June 30, 2022, Omosebi responded to the landlord’s complaints, stating his intention to terminate the lease agreement.
“Due to irreconcilable differences on your breach of agreements, we opt out of renewing our lease. This letter serves as notice to vacate your property within the allowable period,” the letter which has gone viral on the social media said.
However, the landlord resorted to legal action after Omosebi failed to leave.
“I had to use his letter to file for eviction. He claimed ownership of the house but never appeared in court until the final judgment,” the landlord said.
The landlord further alleged that during the court proceedings, a magistrate overseeing the case died, and the judge who delivered the final ruling lost a close relation.
Contacted for comments, Omosebi denied all allegations, including claims of owning the house. “This is all fabricated,” he said.

“My mother gave birth to five children, four girls and a boy. My brother died because of poverty and his death gave my mother high blood pressure that we’re still struggling with.
“There is dignity in labour. Work hard and do not be ashamed of what you do. Don’t let anybody make you feel bad about what you do. This is where I make my own money. This place might look dirty to you but it is where I make money.
“My brother died because we could not afford N7,000. After his death, I decided to work hard like a man. There is nothing I cannot do with my hands. God has really blessed me. With this job, I have built a house for my mother and I have bought two cars as a young girl.”
