The All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday lost 1,331 members to the ruling New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, in Kano State.
The defectors are mainly from 11 wards of Abdullahi Ganduje’s Dawakin-Tofa local government area of the state and vowed to work against the return of APC in Kano.
Prominent among the former APC leaders who have now embraced the NNPP are former Vice Chairman, Dawakin-Tofa local government area, Malam Isyaku Dahiru Kwa; former state assembly aspirant, Audu Magaji Tumfafi; Bashir Musa Sani, APC Youth Leader for Takai Organization among others.
Receiving the defectors to the ruling party, at a reception in Dawakin-Tofa, the state Chairman of NNPP, Hashimu Dungurawa, hailed Ganduje’s kinsmen for moving to the NNPP.
One of the decampees, Isyaku Dahiru kwa, had alleged total neglect by Ganduje and his inability to develop the Dawakin-Tofa local government area during his eight-year tenure as a major reason for their decision.
He said the NNPP under the leadership of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is committed to entrenching socio-economic and infrastructural development in Kano and the country at large.
While assuring the newest members of the NNPP of equal opportunity within the party caucus, Dungurawa dispelled rumours of mass defection of NNPP members to APC.
He maintained that the NNPP is not losing grip of its party structure across the political wards, describing those aligning with APC as 419s struggling to collect their national cake from their recruiters.
“We learned that one APC man has been receiving members of NNPP into APC. Let me remind the Abuja man that we have checked the roll call of our members and we have not noticed any reduction in the number of our numerical strength.”
He advised the Abuja APC man to shine his eye and beware of 419 people coming to collect the public fund at his disposal in the name of decamping, saying they would not blame anyone claiming to have decamped from NNPP to APC simply to collect his own share from the disposable income.
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Wednesday, undertook an on-the-spot assessment of the Kano State High Court, which was vandalised, looted and razed amid the recent nationwide hunger protest, which turned violent in parts of the North.
Yusuf, during the tour, regretted the invasion and destruction of the state high court by hoodlums, lamenting that “the hired miscreants carted away corruption charges documents on former Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who has been facing multiple charges before the state high court.”
According to a statement on Wednesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, the governor was conducted round the court premises by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, the Chief Registrar of the high court, Alhaji Abdullahi Bayero, and some judges.
“It is very unfortunate that enemies of Kano State hired undesirable elements to vandalise one of the historic public buildings with a mission to subvert the corruption charges against the acting National Chairman of the APC and former governor of the state, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his family and aides,” Yusuf was quoted to have said.
According to the statement, the hoodlums “destroyed virtually all units of the high court, including the office of the state Chief Judge, with loss amounting to more than N1bn through the stealing of office equipment, destroying offices, burning cars and other relevant materials crucial to the dispensation of justice.”
Governor Yusuf called on youths in the state to desist from being used by detractors to engage in violence but to rather concentrate on skills acquisition to better their future, promising them the government’s support.
He ordered the immediate rehabilitation of the courthouse and the deployment of more security to ensure effective justice delivery.
Yusuf also commiserated with the Kano State Chief Judge, Justice Dije Abdu Aboki, and the entire judiciary over what he described as an ugly incident.
The governor commended the people of the state for their support and cooperation with his present administration and prayed for the sustenance of the tempo for peace, stability, and prosperity, and economic development in the state.
The management of the state high court had in a statement on August 4 lamented the invasion, vandalism and burning of the high court, saying investigation had begun to track down the perpetrators.
The spokesperson for the court, Baba Ibrahim, recalled that on August 1, rioters, who claimed to be #EndBadGovernment protesters, broke into the premises of the headquarters of the state high court, vandalised offices and “stole an unspecified amount of money and guns seized from kidnappers and kept as exhibits in ongoing cases.”
Ibrahim said, “Private and official vehicles parked on the premises of the court were razed, while some were vandalised by the protesters.
“Offices, including that of the Chief Judge and other judges in the court, were vandalised. The protesters destroyed the new and old case files and scattered everything in the buildings.
“Exhibits, including guns kept in the court’s store, were also looted.
“This is the first time the Kano State Judiciary has witnessed such an incident. Vehicles parked on the court’s promises were also vandalised, and looted.”
