Life Support Foundation has given 1500 widows medical and free gifts to celebrate 2024 Widow’s Day.
The outreach: was done in collaboration with FireBrand Assemblies of God Church, (USA).
Founder, of the organization, Rev. Edith Mpamaugo, described the day as one to call attention to challenges widows face, such as deprivation, neglect, poverty etc.
She said: “The event was organised to give a holistic package to widows. They were sensitised to their rights, taking into cognisance challenges they face, letting them know things that contribute harmful practice to widows and which they should not be part of.
“We listened to their challenges, and provided of about N10million cash for them to add to their business and equally relief their financial burden.
Rev. Mrs. Mpamaugo said that it was the toughest year for them to celebrate Christmas for the widows because of the challenges they had, but God almighty showed up and they are able to do the support. It is an initiative for widows that God instructed them to do for years now. God provides various forms of assistance, and we were able to take care of so many things including medical care, financial support (cash), and palliative care services’.
Rev. Nkechi Ukomadu from firebrand Assemblies of God Church USA, spoke on behalf of her husband and self.
She said they came to minister to people, stating that ‘While we give material things with free medical care, we believe in God to take care of the other things that concern their life’.
Ukomadu called on government and Nigerians in Diaspora to ensure they support the less privileged. While they enjoy abroad, they should remember those at home and give out some of their wealth. Giving to widows is the heart of God’, she added.
She urged government to provide basic needs of widows including access to healthcare services, regular check-ups, mental health support and treatment for any chronic illnesses.
‘The aim would be to ensure that widows receive the necessary medical attention and support to maintain their health.
“Financial support is crucial for many widows who may have lost their primary breadwinner. Cash assistance programs might provide regular stipends, emergency funds, or help with specific needs like housing, education for children, or daily living expenses.
“This type of specialized medical care focuses on providing relief from symptoms and stress associated with serious illnesses. For widows, this may include physical, emotional, and spiritual support, especially if they are dealing with their own health challenges or grieving the loss of a spouse’, she further said.
Also, the District Sectary, Assemblies of God Church, Lekki Rev Chris Okhamera, urged the widows to have faith in God; saying; ‘He is father of the fatherless and a judge for the widows, God in His holy habitation; He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing’.
Okhamera encouraged them to trust in God; adding; ‘The Lord protects the strangers; He supports the fatherless and the widow, but He thwarts the way of the wicked; The Lord will tear down the house of the proud, but He will establish the boundary of the widow’.

Health, they say, is wealth. NNPC Ltd does not just recognise this axiom, it actively invests in cultivating health among Nigerians with the understanding that a healthy people create a wealthy nation.
Long before its transformation into a limited liability company, NNPC has been involved in various health intervention programmes ranging from building and equipping health centres in host communities to medical outreaches to communities.
With the transition into a limited liability company and the eventual establishment of the NNPC Foundation, a dedicated arm for harnessing the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility policy and programmes, a new focus and energy have been introduced into the company’s quest to help in building a healthy nation/populace.
One of the focus areas of the NNPC Foundation’s healthcare intervention is cancer. The foundation has carried out free cancer screening campaigns across the country. Over 3,441 persons across the country have benefitted from the free screening intervention.
One of the Foundation’s free cancer screening campaigns tagged “Cancer Awareness and ZSX Screening” which held across the six geopolitical zones of the country with screening centres in Kaduna, Rivers, Ondo, Benue, Imo and Gombe States.
The campaign went beyond providing free screening for breast, cervical, and prostate cancer, to providing health education, workshops, and consultations with healthcare professionals aimed at empowering individuals to recognize early symptoms, adopt preventive health measures, and better understand the importance of regular screenings.
The Managing Director of NNPC Foundation Ltd, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, explains the foundation’s focus on cancer thus: “The fight against cancer requires a collective effort and a commitment to ensuring accessible healthcare. This campaign is about more than just screening; it’s about saving lives, building awareness, and creating pathways to preventive care for Nigerians who need it most.”
Speaking further, she said: “In a country of over 200 million people, too many still lack access to the early detection tools that could make a life-saving difference. NNPC Foundation is dedicated to addressing this critical gap by bringing cancer screenings directly to communities. Early detection is crucial to improving survival rates, and this campaign is a vital step towards that goal.”
The Foundation had earlier carried out a similar free cancer screening campaign in February 2024 in Abuja. The objective of the free screening campaigns is to counter the trend of late-stage diagnoses, which occur frequently due to limited access to screening facilities, cultural stigmas, and insufficient awareness.
Cancer remains one of the most formidable health challenges in Nigeria, with over 79,000 cancer-related deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The most common cancers affecting Nigerian men include prostate and liver cancer, while women are predominantly impacted by breast and cervical cancers.
The Foundation’s intervention in the health sector is not restricted to the provision of free cancer screening. Earlier in the year, it also carried out a medical outreach in Garki community in Abuja. About 450 members of the community received health checkups, treatment, and medical consumables.
The Foundation also conducted a similar medical outreach programme at the Utako Market in Abuja which saw 291 traders benefit from the free screening for glaucoma.
NNPC Ltd.’s rejuvenating touch in the health sector also reached those with heart diseases. The Foundation went into partnership with the Nigerian Cardiac Society provided free heart surgeries to 40 patients with various heart conditions in the course of the year.
The Foundation’s other health cum humanitarian interventions in the year also include the donation of over 20 trucks of food, water, medical consumables, and sanitary products to the Borno State Government for victims of the devastating flood that ravaged the state earlier in September.
The Foundation also donated 60 mattresses and dental accessories to Ile-Ife Special School for Children with Disabilities.
Beyond providing energy to drive industrial and economic growth, NNPC Ltd is also investing heavily in the health of Nigerians to ensure all-round prosperity for Nigeria.

In her opening address, Mother Victoria A. Oloruntegbe, the Chairman of the Praise Night Technical Committee, emphasized the significance of gathering to worship God, setting the tone for the night. She began with a heartfelt call to worship, saying: “Tonight, we gather to declare the glory of our King. As the heavens declare His handiwork, so must we with our voices, hearts, and lives. Worship is our highest calling, and I pray that this night will be a transformative encounter for everyone present. Let us rejoice and celebrate the One who reigns forever.”

It is no news that unemployment is a major problem in Nigeria. According to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistic (NBS), unemployment rate in the first quarter of 2024 stood at 5.3% with a marginal one percent improvement to 4.3% in the second quarter.
Over the years, there have been series of interventions by various government agencies and non-governmental organizations to stem the tide of unemployment in the country. From the introduction of entrepreneurial studies in schools to various skills acquisition programmes designed to transform applicants to self-employed persons and eventually employer of labour, most of the interventions appeared like a drop of water in a vast desert.
Prior to its transformation into a limited liability company under the PIA 2021, NNPC, as a responsible corporate citizen had been involved a series of entrepreneurial/empowerment programmes through its various subsidiaries in the form of host-community CSR programmes. With the transformation into a limited liability company and the establishment of the NNPC Foundation, a subsidiary dedicated to carrying out the company’s social responsibility programmes in a more focused manner, the intervention in entrepreneurial/empowerment programme was retooled to address the root of the unemployment challenge, especially at the graduate level.
This gave birth to the NYSC Empowerment Programme which is designed to upscale NNPC Ltd.’s intervention to the national level while at the same time addressing the factor of financial illiteracy which had been identified as the reason for the low level of success in the various interventions.
The wisdom in incorporating financial literacy into the youth empowerment programme by the NNPC Foundation lies in the fact that one requires a dose of it to be able to establish and successfully run a business. The absence of financial literacy is believed to be the reason most of those trained and empowered with skills over the years in the various empowerment programmes often fail to establish and grow successful businesses thereby defeating the objectives of the programmes.
With the partnership with NYSC, NNPC Foundation has created a training/empowerment module targeted at young graduates mobilised for the compulsory national youth service. Across the 37 NYSC Orientation Camps in the country, interested corps members sign up for the module and are equipped with financial literacy skills to enable them manage and invest their money effectively and function as entrepreneurs.
In 2024, a total of 560,065 NYSC members benefitted from the programme. Speaking on the objective of the programme, the Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, said: “By educating corps members on financial management and entrepreneurship, the program aims to empower them to become economically self-sufficient and to contribute positively to society.”
But the NNPC Foundation’s NYSC Empowerment Programme goes beyond just equipping corps members with financial literacy skills. Incorporated within the programme is Business Pitching Exercise. This is targeted at those corps members who exhibit keener interest and higher aptitude in pursuing establishing their own businesses and pursuing an entrepreneurial path.
Under this programme, interested corps members are further trained to hone their skills in developing business ideas into a business plan which they would pitch before a selected panel of assessors to determine winners based on market relevance, competitive edge and innovation, scalability, potential impact on the community. “During the pitching exercise, projects that standout will receive startup packs, business advisory services, and opportunities to scale their ventures,” Mrs Arukwe explained.
In 2024, a total of 2,659 corps members across the country participated in the NNPC Foundation Pitching Exercise.
The foundation also facilitated a 50% reduction in the registration fees for some of the corps members to register their businesses with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) thereby starting them off on their entrepreneurial journey.
The efforts of the Foundation in providing humanitarian services across the country and driving youth empowerment have attracted accolades from the Institute for Humanitarian Studies and Social Development (IHSD) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), culminating in the Award for Humanitarian Excellence in Service.

In a bold move to combat neonatal jaundice in Nigeria, Reckitt, a global leader in health, hygiene, and nutrition, has partnered with Oscar Anderson, Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), and the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA) to launch Project Oscar ‘Light for Life’ initiative.
This initiative which focuses on neonatal jaundice screening, treatment, and kernicterus prevention, was officially launched at an event held on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at the Four Points Hotel in Lagos, coinciding with the global observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
This flagship program aims to address the urgent challenges surrounding neonatal jaundice (NNJ) in Nigeria, a condition affecting approximately 60% of term neonates and up to 100% of preterm infants. NNJ remains a leading cause of preventable brain damage, including conditions like kernicterus and cerebral palsy, despite the availability of effective and affordable treatments.
Challenges such as inadequate diagnostic tools, unreliable phototherapy equipment, and widespread misconceptions about the condition continue to hinder proper management.
Project Oscar – Light For Life seeks to close these gaps by providing healthcare facilities with essential tools, such as phototherapy units and bilirubinometers, ensuring accurate diagnoses and timely treatment.
The program also includes training for healthcare professionals on recognizing and managing NNJ and raising awareness among mothers and families to dispel common myths.
Originally launched in Vietnam by young disability activist Oscar Anderson MBE and Reckitt, where it has treated over 150,000 newborns since 2019, the program is now expanding to Nigeria as part of a broader effort to reduce neonatal mortality and prevent lifelong disabilities.
This initiative aligns with global health priorities and seeks collaboration with international bodies, including the World Health Organization (WHO), to integrate NNJ management into global neonatal care guidelines.
Speaking at the event, Akbar Ali Shah, General Manager, Reckitt Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasised the urgent need for such an initiative, stating “Every child deserves a healthy start in life, yet for far too many families, neonatal jaundice remains a silent threat—often going unnoticed and untreated until it’s too late.
At Reckitt, we recognise that addressing this challenge demands more than just providing tools; it calls for steadfast commitment, robust partnerships, and comprehensive education. With Project Oscar, we are bringing these critical elements together.
As Nigeria stands among the nations most affected by neonatal jaundice, expanding Project Oscar to Nigeria represents a transformative step forward and we are determined to ensure this initiative creates a healthier, brighter future for every child born in Nigeria .”
Her Excellency Toyin Saraki, Founder and President of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, also commented saying, “It is fitting that we gather on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, this year’s theme reminds us that inclusion is not just a moral imperative but a necessity for sustainable progress and development.
Neonatal jaundice If left untreated, it can lead to kernicterus, cerebral palsy, and other severe disabilities, contributing to as much as 5–14% of neonatal deaths.
The statistics are sobering, but they also call us to action. Today, as we nationally launch Project Oscar – Light For Life, we confront this challenge with urgency and resolve, and the understanding that neonatal jaundice is not just a medical issue;
it is a matter of equity and justice.”
Oscar Anderson, whose personal journey inspired the initiative, equally shared his thoughts on the expansion of Project Oscar to Nigeria, “As someone who has lived with the consequences of neonatal jaundice, I know firsthand the pain it can cause—both for the individual and their family. This project was born out of my determination to ensure that no child or parent has to endure what my family went through.
I am excited to see this initiative, which began in my home country of Vietnam, now taking root in Nigeria, a nation where the need is greatest.
Neonatal jaundice should never be a cause of lifelong challenges. I can’t wait to see the lives we will change together in Nigeria and beyond, as we shine the light of hope and healing into communities that need it the most.”
Prof. Akin Abayomi, Commissioner for Health, Lagos State, representing the Lagos State Governor, His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu, highlighted the transformative potential of Project Oscar and its significant pilot in Lagos State.
He remarked “It’s remarkable how such a simple therapy can profoundly improve life quality when timely intervention is provided. Project Oscar is a much-needed advancement in our mission to prevent neonatal jaundice and eradicate kernicterus in Lagos and across Nigeria. Lagos is honoured to be the beneficiary of this transformative initiative, and we are committed to maximizing its impact.”
As Project Oscar begins its transformative journey in Nigeria, Reckitt and Wellbeing Foundation Africa invites all stakeholders—healthcare providers, policymakers, and community leaders—to join the cause and advocate for sustainable improvements in neonatal care.

Not fewer than two hundred people have been treated free of charge of their various ailments courtesy of Dr. Kenneth Ebong Foundation. The free medical service carried out under the auspices of Gilead medical outreach of Living Faith Church, took place over the weekend at Living Faith Church, Ekput, Ibiono Ibom Local government.
Being the second in the series, the 2024 edition of the free medical outreach like the 2024 March edition, started with praise and worship service on the opening day which was Friday at the Ekput branch of the Living Faith Church built and donated by the MD/CEO of POTENT GROUP, Dr. Kenneth Utibe Ebong.
As early as 9am in the morning of the second day people started to throng the venue for the free medical intervention in their clusters to access the treatment. All that was required was to take a seat under the canopies that were mounted to shed the beneficiaries from the scourging sun. After which tags were given based on first come first served basis, awaiting the arrival of the medical team led by Dr. Charles Mbong.
Upon the arrival of the medical team in company of the arrowhead of the foundation, Dr. Kenneth Ebong the auxiliary hands who had been on ground earlier, began the registration serially and doctors started consulting immediately without any hitch.
It could be recalled, compared with what obtained in the March 2024 edition which was fraught with a bit of teething challenges, there was a remarkable improvement in that this December 2024 edition as everything went on seamlessly till a little after 4pm fixed for closing.
As usual the December 2024 medical outreach covered three days which rounded off on Sunday with distribution of free food items such as rice Yam and indomie noodles to the most vulnerable of the society, including widows and children, especially the orphans. The free medical service covered the basics, vitals, administration of drugs, eye test and provision of lenses as some deteriorated cases were referred to University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Uyo for further attention.
So many beneficiaries poured encomiums and prayers on the family of the sponsor of the great initiative, but the one that was quite outstanding was that of the Headmistress of a primary school, Mrs Bassey Edem Akwa who described the gesture as rare, maintaining that there are so many people in the community who are even richer but don’t have the milk of human kindness to do what the sponsor has done.
She extended appreciation to the doctors and others for the high class of professionalism exhibited by the medical team, according to her, apart from the care and passion displayed by the doctors, the drugs are also genuinely sourced.
Reacting to the outpour of encomiums by the beneficiaries, the sponsor, Dr. Kenneth Ebong who had expended about N3.5m to host the free medical and Food distribution, said passion to provide succour to the less privileged by sharing the little he has in the spirit of the season, is his motivation, not because he is so rich as might be misconstrued.
“The December 2024 edition of free medical outreach stated with praise and worship on the opening day which was Friday. Today Saturday is the free medical which covers the vitals, administration of drugs, eye test and provision of lenses which was not included in the March edition.
“This year is better than that of last March 2024 and in the same vein the one of next year will be better. On Sunday we will share free food such as rice, Yam and indomie noodles to the widows in the spirit of love which the season represents,” he explained.
He used the opportunity to call on other well to do individuals from Akwa Ibom, Ekput village and its environ to join hands with him to put smile on the faces of the less privileged to make the world a better place to live.
