Borussia Dortmund is undergoing a crisis. Currently languishing in 10th place in the Bundesliga and 13th in the Champions League standings, the German club has suffered four consecutive defeats, the latest being a 2-1 loss to Bologna in the Champions League.
This poor run of form has led to the dismissal of head coach Nuri Şahin, as announced by Dortmund on Wednesday morning.
Şahin’s departure, though anticipated, marks the end of a difficult tenure for the former midfielder. Despite his efforts to stabilize the team, Dortmund’s management decided to act decisively after Tuesday’s loss.
Now, all eyes are on Erik ten Hag, the former Ajax Amsterdam and Manchester United coach. Ten Hag, a regular visitor at Signal Iduna Park, has a strong rapport with Dortmund advisor Matthias Sammer and is reportedly open to taking over, provided he is given the opportunity to build a long-term project.
Dortmund’s search for a replacement also includes other names like Roger Schmidt, Sandro Wagner, Sebastian Hoeness, and Niko Kovac. However, Ten Hag is the standout candidate. With his track record of developing young talent and achieving success at Ajax, he seems well-suited to reinvigorate Dortmund. The club’s leadership is expected to move swiftly to secure the Dutchman’s services and begin their revival.
