Former Black Stars midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu has weighed in on the current state of Ghana football, urging fans and stakeholders to rally behind the Ghana Football Association (GFA) despite a tough year for the national teams.
Speaking candidly about the challenges, Badu acknowledged the frustrations of football fans but emphasized the need for unity and support for the GFA’s efforts. “Where I am sitting, we need to support the FA, respect the FA, and understand where they are coming from,” he stated.
The football year has been a challenging one for Ghana football, marked by high-profile setbacks. The Black Stars failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in decades, and the locally-based national team missed out on the African Nations Championship (CHAN). These developments have drawn widespread criticism from fans and pundits alike, with many questioning the direction of Ghana football.
“It is rather unfortunate that the football year has been unfavourable for us,” Badu admitted. “We were unable to go to the CHAN and the AFCON as well. These are tournaments where we’ve historically made our mark, so missing out hurts deeply.”
Despite these disappointments, the former Udinese midfielder called for optimism, particularly in Ghana’s ongoing campaign to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Black Stars are currently in contention, and Badu stressed the importance of ensuring the team secures a spot on the world’s biggest stage.
“In the World Cup race, we are in, and we can’t afford not to go to the World Cup,” he said passionately. “So, whatever they [the GFA] think is best for the nation, we will support them. This is not the time for division or blame; it’s time to come together for the good of Ghana football.”
Badu’s comments serve as a reminder of the cyclical nature of football success and the importance of long-term planning. While acknowledging the frustrations of missing out on major tournaments, he believes that a unified approach is essential to rebuilding and regaining Ghana’s place at the top of African football.
As the Black Stars prepare for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, Badu’s call for solidarity is a rallying cry for both fans and officials to work towards a brighter future for Ghana football.
