Banyana Banyana are looking forward to giving hosts Jamaica a sterner test when the two nations meet again at the Catherine Hall Stadium in Montego Bay on Monday.
The Sasol-sponsored South African senior women’s national team lost the first meeting 0-3 on 29 November 2024 at the same venue and will be determined to make amends in the second international friendly match.
Banyana Banyana will be looking to correct their errors in this second match and Head Coach Dr Desiree Ellis said her team will have to be more deliberate when going forward against the Reggae Girlz.
“We had a great video analysis session with the players, and we know that going into the second match we will have to be aggressive upfront. We are good at creating chances and staying compact at the back, but it will be important that we make use of our chances,” said Dr Ellis.
“One of the main reasons for these matches was to see new players, and we will continue to give as many players as possible a chance to play, but this is also always dictated by the match itself. We are looking for an improved performance tomorrow, as we are still preparing for next year’s WAFCON.”
The match will be live on Youtube and kick off is at 02h30 on Tuesday morning (South Africa time) as Jamaica is seven hours behind South Africa
Joe Alwyn Addresses Theory That He Inspired Taylor Swift Song “The Black Dog”
Sparks may be flying for Joe Alwyn.
The 33-year-old showed off his charm during a cheeky interview with Chicken Shop Date host Amelia Dimoldenberg—known for her flirty conversations with celebs—during GQ’s Men of the Year event in London.
As Joe approached Amelia in the Nov. 27 TikTok, she began to sing, “Hello, Joe,” before quickly questioning why she was singing.
But the Englishman—whose six-year relationship with Taylor Swift ended in 2023—was quick to assure her, saying, “I liked it.”
Amelia went on to ask the Kinds of Kindness actor about his social habits, asking if he is “a party person or a party pooper,” to which he gave a pointed response.
“Well, you hope a party person,” he quipped before later adding, “you need balance.”
But aside from wondering if Joe is the best thing at this party, Amelia also got into some more academic topics. When asked about which piece of London architecture is his favorite, Joe—who stars in The Brutalist, an upcoming movie about an English architect—chose the Barbican, a performing arts center in the heart of the city.
Flamingos head coach, Bankole Olowookere refused to blame his players following the team’s disappointing exit from the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Olowookere’s side lost 2-0 to the USA in their quarter-final encounter on Saturday night.
Kennedy Fuller and Kimmi Ascanio scored both goals for the Americans.
The gaffer expressed satisfaction with the efforts of his players.
“I’m so proud of the girls, they’ve given it their best, come all this way and they are kids who are developing. They’ve given their best but maybe their best was not good enough,” he was quoted by FIFA.com.
“To my fellow Nigerians, we can go beyond this level and we will try and be better next time.”
Lazio manager, Marco Baroni, is expecting big things from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, DAILY POST reports.
Dele-Bashiru registered an assist in Lazio’s UEFA Europa League 2-0 win against Dutch club, Twente on Thursday night.
The midfielder set up Gustav Isaksen for Lazio’s second goal three minutes from time.
It was the Nigerian’s second goal contribution in the Europa League this season.
DAILY POST recalls he scored on his maiden appearance against Dynamo Kiev last month.
“Dele-Bashiru is a very physical player but also has quality, he’s very good at running forward,” Baroni told TMW.
“It’ll be a difficult test and it’s right to see how he behaves because he’s improving; I think he’s a player with a very important prospect.”
A first-half own goal from visiting goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk was enough to give Arsenal a narrow 1-0 home win, and maintain our unbeaten start to the league phase in the Champions League.
Martinelli created the only goal, it was his low shot that cannoned back off the post and in off the goalkeeper.
Riznyk was involved again in the second-half, saving a penalty from Leandro Trossard and the Gunners needed a full-stretch, flying save from David Raya in injury-time to secure the win.
Gabriel Jesus was one of two players – along with Martinelli – brought back into the side after the defeat at Bournemouth, and the captain for the night carved out Arsenal’s first chance.
Starting on the right wing, Jesus dropped his shoulder to beat Yukhym Konoplia, sent a dangerous low cross into the six-yard but it was intercepted ahead of the lurking Kai Havertz.
On the half hour Arsenal took the lead, and although Martinelli was the instigator, it will go down as an own goal. Declan Rice passed to Martinelli in the box, who was fronted up by a couple of Shakhtar defenders.
The Brazilian shifted the ball onto his right foot, got his shot away that hit the base of the post, rebounded off the grounded Riznyk’s back, and into the net.It was unfortunate for the Shakhtar goalkeeper, but Martinelli deserved the goal for his composure in the area.
In the final 20 minutes Arsenal were awarded a penalty after a VAR review, for a handball against Valeriy Bondar, who used his arm to block Merino’s cross from the left.
Trossard was the man who stepped up to take the spot kick, but his effort was straight down the middle and kept out by Riznyk’s feet as he dived to his left.
It was the first penalty Arsenal missed at home since December 2021, and the first they haven’t converted anywhere after scoring their last 11.
Leicester City legend Gary Lineker has drawn high praise for one of the club’s emerging stars, Fatawu Issahaku likening him to Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka following an electrifying performance in the Foxes’ dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Southampton this weekend.
Leicester found themselves trailing 2-0 at halftime, but a sensational second-half resurgence saw them turn the tide and secure back-to-back wins. At the heart of the revival was the Ghanaian star, Fatawu Issahaku whose dynamic display caught the eye of the Match of the Day host.
Lineker, a former Leicester forward, couldn’t hold back his admiration:
“I’ve watched him a lot. I watched him last season when he was actually on loan, I mean the kid’s really special,” Lineker said. “He’ll beat people, he’s quick, he’ll take people on, he’ll cut inside and bend one in the top corner, he’ll go down the outside and cross the ball. He’s a little like Saka in that way.”
The comparison to Bukayo Saka, one of the Premier League’s brightest stars, is not something Lineker handed out lightly. However, the Leicester legend was careful to temper expectations:
“I’m not going to say he’s as good as Saka – not yet – but he’s only 19. He’s got an incredible work ethic, got a lovely personality. He’s a real character, and everyone at Leicester knows that.”
Leicester’s second-half turnaround not only earned them three valuable points but also showcased the potential of their young prodigy. With his blend of pace, flair, and versatility, Fatawu Issahaku is proving to be a key asset for the Foxes this season.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has sternly cautioned auto dealers in the state against the unauthorised display of vehicles for sale on road setbacks, pedestrian walkways, and other prohibited areas, as this hinders the smooth movement of traffic.
According to a statement by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, on Wednesday, the General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, issued this warning to the Lagos Motor Dealers Association during their courtesy visit to the LASTMA office in Oshodi.
The statement revealed that during the visit, Bakare-Oki emphasised the need to maintain order and ensure smooth traffic flow, citing numerous complaints from Community Development Associations about illegal auto dealers’ activities. He highlighted the dangers of illegally placing vehicles on roadsides, streets, and walkways, which risked public safety, hindered pedestrian movement, and worsened traffic congestion.
“The Lagos State Government is dedicated to ensuring a safe and orderly environment for all residents and road users. We will not hesitate to enforce the law against any auto dealer found violating these regulations,” Bakare-Oki asserted.
According to him, LASTMA, in collaboration with other relevant agencies, would strengthen its surveillance, step up enforcement and crack down on offenders by penalising any violator. Auto dealers are, therefore, encouraged to comply with vehicle display guidelines or face penalties, including fines and vehicle impoundment.
The Lagos Motor Dealers Association President, Prince Leke Aladegbemi, in response, expressed the association’s readiness to collaborate with LASTMA and other authorities to ensure their members comply with the regulations. He acknowledged the need for dealers to operate lawfully and pledged to raise awareness about the significance of adhering to the state regulations.
