The week-long 55th convocation the University of Lagos will hold between January 10 and 19, 2025, according to the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola.
Addressing a pre-convocation press conference on Wednesday at the senate chamber of the university, Prof. Ogunsola said the main activities which will start on Monday, January 13, with an exhibition of Innovations and works of our staff and students at the Senate Car Park, will be preceded by a Jumaat Service on Friday, January 10 at the University Central Mosque.
The VC also said the week-long celebrations would feature awards of First Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates, as well as Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters, Doctorate degrees and Honorary Awards.
This year, we will be graduating 16,409 students. Of these, 9,684 students will receive first degrees and diplomas while 6,659will be awarded postgraduate degrees while 66 will graduate from the UNILAG business School.
‘Our two overall best graduating student is shared by two students from the faculty of Science, Department of Cell Biology & Genetics with a perfect score of 5.0 – Damilare Haroun ADEBAKIN and Samuel Akinade BADEKALE.
‘The best graduating student from the humanities is Olamide Idris EMIDA from the Faculty of Management Sciences in the department of Accounting with CGPA of 4.95. The overall best Ph.D. Thesis award for this year goes to Adetoun Alaba AKITOYE, who obtained her Ph.D. in Chemistry while the best Ph.D. thesis (Humanities) is Eniola Niniola LADIPO’, the VC further said.
She stated that after the exhibition on Monday, January 13, ‘We will proceed from there to the Commissioning of three projects by our Pro-Chancellor Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN.
‘These are the Centre for Herbal Medicine, Drug recovery & Development, biomedical Toxicology, Regulatory science and pharmacovigilance analytical laboratory (ACEDHARS Building) – One of the World Bank supported Centres of Excellence project which is focused on the development of indigenous plants for medical applications.
‘We are also commissioning the new 120-bed space Moremi Hall extension and finally the new ultra-modern Learning Commons, an extension of our library services which speaks to our student-centered services and provides an environment for teamwork, creative engagement, research-collaboration, and knowledge co-creation’, the VC said.
According to her, at noon of the same day, the Convocation Lecture titled, “Universities as Hubs for Development and Wealth Creation” will be delivered by Dr. Tayo Aduloju, the CEO of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG) at J.F. Ade-Ajayi Auditorium, adding; ‘We are looking forward to a very thought-provoking lecture that will add to the discuss on funding of tertiary education and positioning them as drivers of economic and social development.
‘We are privileged to have as Chairman, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, CON, SAN, former Governor of Lagos State and former Minister of Works whose clarity in addressing issues was pivotal to innovative reforms and development of our Country’.
The VC said at 3pm, there would be a groundbreaking ceremony for the School of Postgraduate Studies building donated by Chief Tunde Fanimokun in commemoration of his 80th Birthday, adding that the building was first conceptualised in 2014, ‘but we were unable to build it. 10 years later, we are finally here that will end the sojourn of the school on the top floor of the Faculty of Education building’.
While on Tuesday there will be the award of first degrees, diplomas, certificates, and prizes to graduating students of the Faculties of Arts, Education, Environmental Sciences, Science, and Social Sciences, on Wednesday the 15th the conferment of degrees will be for graduands from the College of Medicine in the Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, and Dental Sciences, and Faculties of Engineering, Law, Management Sciences, Pharmacy, and the Distance Learning Institute (DLI).
On Thursday, January 16, 2025, Prof. Ogunsola said Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters, and Ph.D. degrees including DBA and EMBA would be conferred on graduands of the School of Postgraduate Studies and the University of Lagos Business School (ULBS). The highlight of the day will be the recognition of the achievement of various individuals for their contributions to scholarship and humanity.
She also said; ‘We recognise two distinguished professors who have retired but continue to contribute to scholarship and academia by awarding them as Professors emeriti of the University of Lagos. These are Professor Babajide Alo, FAS (of the Department of Chemistry) and Professor Olukayode Amund (Department of Microbiology). In the same ceremony we will be awarding Professor Victor Ariole, (Department of European Languages) a Gold Medal for his ongoing contributions to the University and the nation’.
‘We will also be the conferring Honorary degrees in recognition to three personalities who have distinguished themselves in scholarship, made ground-breaking discoveries, or contributed significantly to academic and societal development. This year, we have the privilege of honouring two men and a woman, who have shown that Integrity, hard work and service to the Nation work. They are; Mr. Fola Adeola OFR, Engr. Kolawole Adesina, MFR, FNSE and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo -Iweala, GCON will be conferred with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (D. Sc).
On Friday, January 17, 2025, there will be a Long Service Award at 10am, followed at 4pm by the Convocation play.
‘This year, we will be treated to Langbodo by Wale Ogunyemi at JF Ade Ajayi Auditorium’, she said.
According to the VC, the ceremonies will formally come to an end on Sunday, January 19, 2025, with a Thanksgiving Service at the Chapel of Christ Our Light, University of Lagos at 10 am.

TUNDE ADELEKE, Osogbo
The Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, has concluded plans to honour the First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, and four other distinguished personalities with doctorate degree at the 48th convocation ceremony of the institution billed to hold on Saturday 14th of December.
Other personalities to be honored includes the chairman, Mutual Benefit Plc, Dr. Akinade Ogunbiyi, Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe, the Chief Executive Officer, MTN Nigeria Communications PLC, Karl Toriola, and Daere Afonya-Akobo.
The Vice Chancellor, OAU, Professor Simeon Bamire, disclosed this at a press conference heralding activities for the 48th Convocation ceremony, held in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Thursday.
Bamire stressed that the individuals were been selected in recognition of their contribution to the development of the society.
He said, “We’ll confer Honorary Awards on five expectational individuals who have made significant contributions to humanity by uplifting the less privileged and advancing societal progress through their talents, financial resources, and material support.”
Bamire while disclosing that during the three-day convocation ceremonies, 7,368 students will graduate across all 13 faculties said 215 students made First Class Honours, Second Class Upper Division, 2,197, Second Class Lower Division, 2,691, Third Class Honours Upper Credit, 61, Lower Credit, 33, Pass, 62, making a total of 6,015 students for Classified Degrees.
“Unclassified Degrees: Distinction, 13 students, Pass with Distinction, 59 students, Pass with Credit, 154 and Pass, 169, making a total of 395 for Unclassified Degrees.
“Postgraduate Degrees: 74 students would bag Postgraduate Diplomas, while 708 and 176 students would bag Master’s Degrees and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)”, he added.

The Management of the University of Benin, UNIBEN, says a total of 385 students bagged first class honours in the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 combined convocation of the University.
DAILY POST reports that 206 students bagged first class in 2021/2022 while 179 first class bagged first class in 2022/2023.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Lilian Salami disclosed this on Monday at the 49th/50 convocation and 54th Founders’ day media briefing in Benin City.
Salami also disclosed that a total of 20,630 students would bag first degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters and PhDs at the combined convocation ceremonies.
She gave the breakdown of the graduands as 10,609 for 2021/2022 academic session and 10,021 for 2022/2023 academic session.
She said the award of first and higher degrees are scheduled between November 22 and November 23, 2024.
Salam also announced conferment of Professors Emeritus on seven distinguished academics as well on the university’s honourary degrees on three Nigerian personalities.
“It is gratifying to state that the university of Benin continues to beam its searchlight internally and nationwide to identify and honour distinguished personalities found worthy to be conferred with the recognition as Professors Emeritus and Honorary Doctorate Degrees.
“Seven distinguished Professors have been approved by the Senate of the University to be recipients of the honour of Professors Emeritus at this year’s convocation,” she said.
Salami, however, added that the convocation ceremonies would be her last as the vice-chancellor of the school.
Nineteen graduating students of the University of Ilorin have bagged distinctions in the 2022/2023 academic session, among a total of 12,042 graduating students for the institution’s 39th convocation ceremonies.
Speaking with journalists to herald the 39th convocation ceremonies of the institution in Ilorin on Thursday, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), stated that 18 graduates received distinctions in Pharmacy, while one graduate achieved a distinction in Physiotherapy.
The Vice Chancellor also noted that a total of 256 graduates in the First Degree/Diploma category secured First Class honors, adding that 3,842 obtained Second Class (Upper Division), 6,178 earned Second Class (Lower Division), 1,299 received Third Class, and 62 were awarded Pass degrees.
“The 39th convocation ceremonies also include 124 MB;BS graduands, 64 Nursing graduands, 35 Optometry graduands, 30 Veterinary Medicine graduands, and 18 graduands with Distinction, as well as 85 graduands with Pass in Pharmacy, one distinction and 32 Pass in Physiotherapy.
“We have a total of 16 Diploma degree holders. Furthermore, the total number of Higher Degrees to be awarded at the 39th convocation ceremonies is 1,875; out of this figure, there are 92 Postgraduate Diplomas, 1,280 Masters from various faculties, 179 Professional Masters, one MPhil, and 323 Ph.Ds,” he said.
Speaking on the administration of the university, the Vice Chancellor lamented the multiplier effect of the removal of the petroleum subsidy, particularly its implications for prices of goods and services.
Other challenges faced by the institution, according to the Vice Chancellor, include astronomical increases in electricity tariffs, galloping inflation, and infrastructural needs “to meet the evolving demands of higher education in a rapidly changing world.”
Egbewole, who stated that these obstacles have tested the resolve of the management, added, “We have braved these challenges, but not without a price. We adopted strategies to cope with the challenges, which are inevitable and the only constant matrix.”
The VC also mentioned that a total sum of N1,656,944,930.00 (N1.6 billion) was allocated to the university as an intervention fund from TETFund in the year under review.
He said that the fund covered 11 areas, including physical infrastructure/program upgrade, academic staff training, ICT support, among others.
Egbewole also indicated that the university received the sum of N250,000,000.00 for zonal interventions to execute different projects.
No fewer than 35 graduands will receive certificates for first class honours, at the second convocation ceremony of Dominion University which holds on Saturday.
Speaking during a press conference held on the school premises on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Abel Olorunnisola, noted that eighteen, which represents 51.4 per cent of the 35 first class graduates are from the Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences, while 17 (48.6 per cent) graduated from the Faculty of Computing and Applied Sciences. Olorunnisola, stated further that 19 (54.3 per cent) of the 35 first class graduands are females, while the overall best graduating student, Favour Chizaram Anyinka, graduated with a perfect CGPA of 5.0/5.0 in Biochemistry.
He also hinted that Dominion University Ibadan, awarded scholarships to 28 of the graduating students. Of this number, 10 made first class while the remaining 18 made second class upper.
While recalling that the university produced a total of 96 graduates at the maiden convocation ceremony in 2023, the Vice-Chancellor noted that: “The university is releasing a total of 148 graduates.
“Of this number, six students, one from Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences and five from the Faculty of Computing and Applied Sciences completed their studies at the end of the session in April 2024.
“Out of the remaining 142 graduating students, 84 came from the Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences while 58 from the Faculty of Computing and Applied Sciences) completed their studies.
“Sixty-six (44.6 per cent) of the graduating students are male while 82 (55.4 per cent) are female. A total of 35 students (23.6 per cent) graduated in the first class division, 71 (48.0 per cent) in the second class upper division, 39 (26.4 per cent) in the second class lower division and three (2.0 per cent) in the third class division.”
Activities lined up for the second convocation ceremony includes: Convocation dinner scheduled to hold today, while convocation lecture and novelty match will hold on Friday.
The convocation lecture will be delivered by the Managing Partner, Makanjuola Ojewumi and Co. and Chairman, Jericho Mall, Dr Makanjuola Ojewunmi, Ibadan on Friday, October 19, while the award of first degrees and prizes will holdon Saturday, October 19.
On Saturday, the Award of Degrees and Prizes will hold while on Sunday, the convocation thanksgiving service will hold at Wonder Hall, Wonder City, Lagos- Ibadan Expressway, Oyo State.
A thanksgiving service would hold on Sunday, October 20.

Ahead of the 12th convocation ceremony of Wellspring University, Benin, Edo State, holding on October 18, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Ajayi, has disclosed that no fewer than 149 students will be graduating with five percent graduands making First Class honours.
Ajayi, who disclosed this at a press conference in Benin City, added that 67 of the graduands will be graduating with First Degrees while 82 others will be awarded Post-Graduate Diplomas and Masters degrees respectively.
According to the Vice Chancellor, statistics of the first degree graduates show that three graduands made First Class, 33 (49%) made Second Class, Upper Division, 25 (37%) made Second Class, Lower Division and six (9%) and other categories, just as 46 and 36 will be graduating with Post-Graduate Diplomas and Masters Degree in various courses.
He said: “Activities to celebrate the week include a special keep-fit exercise for staff and students and a novelty match between our female staff and female students. Debate competition and exhibition/research fair.
“A special thanksgiving service for all our graduands is slated for tomorrow while alumni lecture and dinner follows by 4.00 p.m.
“All the activities will culminate, D.V. in the convocation event, Friday, October 18, where the Chancellor of the University, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, will be conferring first and higher degrees on deserving graduands.
The Vice Chancellor disclosed that the university is getting better grip every passing year on the task of preparing skilled manpower for the current knowledge economy that is driven by 5G Networks, among others.
