Real Madrid boss, Carlo Ancelotti has called out referee, Martínez Munuera for not awarding a penalty for a foul on Vinicius Junior during his side’s LaLiga 3-3 draw against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.
Vinicius was clearly brought down inside the penalty area by Muminin in the second half.
But referee Munuera did not award a penalty, nor was there any warning from González Fuertes, the VAR referee.
Speaking at his post-match interview, Ancelotti said: “The penalty seemed very clear to me.
He added, “Vini Jr. didn’t start because he had played 90 minutes in the Champions League and after his injury we wanted him to play in the second half, where there was a bit less intensity.
“Vini did well, he played well and had chances to score. He played a good game.”
Fede Valverde, Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo scored the goals for Real Madrid against the hosts.
The stakes are high as DR Congo and Guinea prepare for a pivotal showdown in the AFCON qualifiers. Both teams have named their starting lineups with specific objectives in mind, reflecting the importance of the encounter.
Guinea’s Strategy: Boost Qualification Hopes
Guinea’s head coach has fielded a strong XI to secure a crucial victory that would keep their qualification hopes alive. Aware that their final group match against Tanzania is a must-win, Guinea intends to lay the groundwork for success in this match. With Camara between the posts, a solid backline of Diakité, Conté, and Sylla is tasked with holding the fort. In midfield, the duo of Sow and Camara provide the engine, while Kamano and Sylla offer width. Upfront, Toure pulls the strings in attack, supporting Cissé and the in-form Guirassy, who will spearhead the offense.
Guinea Starting XI:
Camara – Diakité, Conté, Sylla – Sow, Camara – Toure, Sylla, Kamano – Cissé, Guirassy
DR Congo’s Approach: Seal Qualification with a Win
For DR Congo, the mission is simple: win or draw and secure their spot in the tournament. Coach Sébastien Desabre has opted for an aggressive lineup, balancing defensive solidity and attacking flair. Goalkeeper Bertaud anchors the team, protected by a back four of Inonga, Mbemba, Kalulu, and Masuaku. In midfield, Sadiki, Moutoussamy, and Pickel provide a mix of creativity and control. The trio of Elia, Bongonda, and Banza form a potent attacking unit, aiming to break through Guinea’s defense and put the game beyond doubt.
DR Congo Starting XI:
Bertaud – Inonga, Mbemba, Kalulu, Masuaku – Sadiki, Moutoussamy, Pickel – Elia, Bongonda, Banza
The Stage is Set
With both teams having a lot at stake, the match promises to be a thrilling contest. DR Congo looks to cement their place in the tournament, while Guinea battles to keep their dream alive. The clash is not just about the three points but also about setting the tone for their respective final group fixtures.
At Anfield, Mohamed Salah once again showcased his skill and leadership, guiding Liverpool to a crucial 2-0 victory over Aston Villa. This win, not only earned Liverpool three points but also allowed them to pull five points clear of title rivals and defending champions Manchester City, who had suffered a surprising defeat to Brighton earlier in the day.
Liverpool’s breakthrough came in the 20th minute, thanks to Salah’s quick thinking and resilience. After receiving a pass near midfield, he surged toward the Aston Villa defense, dancing past opponents with his trademark agility. Just as he approached the box, a Villa defender made a last-ditch attempt to stop him, tripping Salah in the process. But even as he went down, Salah managed to slip a perfect pass to Darwin Núñez, who wasted no time and powered the ball into the net, giving Liverpool a 1-0 lead.
As the game wore on, Villa pushed hard for an equalizer, but Liverpool’s defense held firm. With only six minutes left on the clock, Liverpool delivered the final blow. Salah, capitalizing on a quick counterattack, found himself in space near the goal. Cool under pressure, he sidestepped a Villa defender and slotted the ball home, making it 2-0 and sealing the victory for the Reds.
Anfield erupted, knowing that this victory didn’t just secure three points, but also solidified Liverpool’s standing at the top of the table. The Reds, now five points ahead of Manchester City, could feel the momentum shifting in their favor. As the final whistle blew, Liverpool fans celebrated.
Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has reiterated that it is clear that Vinicius Jr. will win the Ballon d’Or.
The winner of the 2024 Ballon d’Or will be announced on Monday in France.
Vinicius, who will compete with the likes of Rodri, Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Dani Carvajal, is widely expected to take home the individual prize.
However, speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of Real Madrid’s LaLiga El Clasico with Barcelon on Saturday, Ancelotti insisted that there is no doubt that the Brazilian will be the winner of the Ballon d’Or this year.
“We can say that Vini will be the next Ballon d’Or, no doubt,” Ancelotti said via Fabrizio Romano.
“Vinicius will win the Ballon d’Or. For me it’s very clear and there can’t be anyone else winning it”.
Lionel Messi won the last edition of the Ballon d’Or after beating Erling Haaland.
A Northern group, Arewa Democratic Front, ADF, has penned an open letter to President Bola Tinubu over the recent outburst by the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, describing it as a clear danger to national security.
According to report Wike, during the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, congress in Rivers State, threatened to set fire in states governed by the PDP should their governors interfere in the Rivers political imbroglio.
He was quoted as saying, “Be prepared because I have the capacity to do the same in your state. Whether you’re from Bauchi or any other state, if you try to interfere in Rivers State, you will get burned and will not sleep peacefully in your state.”
In an open to Mr President on Tuesday, signed by Engr Mustapha Yusuf, President of ADF and Malam Muazu Haruna, the Coordinating Secretary, the group said Wike’s utterances were a reflection of his hatred for Northern Nigeria.
While describing the remarks as reckless and destabilizing, the ADF said the obvious threat to Nigeria’s national security should not be taken for granted.
“Minister Wike’s incendiary threats to ‘set fire’ in states governed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) represent a brazen assault not only on the unity and peace painstakingly fostered by your administration but also on the very fabric of Nigeria’s democratic ethos.
“His outburst, which specifically targeted Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, reeks of political thuggery and signals a disturbing descent into the kind of partisan warfare that threatens the stability of our nation.
“Wike’s audacious declaration, in which he vowed to unleash political turmoil in the states of PDP governors who dare to challenge his influence in Rivers State, is a clear danger to national security.
“His threats to ‘burn the states of any governor who crosses his path, especially those from Northern Nigeria, cannot be brushed aside as mere political rhetoric. These are inflammatory words from a man who holds a significant position within your administration, and they demand a serious and immediate response,” the group noted.
It expressed worry that “the silence from the Presidency in the wake of Wike’s statements is highly deafening and the ADF demands some clarification: Was Wike speaking on behalf of the presidency?
“Does his violent rhetoric reflect the official stance of your administration?
“The people of Northern Nigeria, and indeed the entire nation, deserve to know if such reckless statements have your endorsement or if they were the unfortunate ramblings of an unchecked Minister, in the person of Wike.
“ADF understands Nyesom Wike’s unpleasant demeanor towards the people of Northern Nigeria, judging by his past actions against the people of Northern Nigeria. The likes of former Vice President Alhaji Abubakar Atiku comes to mind.”
The ADF reminded President Tinubu that Northern Nigeria had borne the brunt of violence and instability in recent years.
“Our region has suffered from the scourge of terrorism, banditry, and communal conflicts, and we cannot afford to allow a senior member of your administration to fan the flames of division and hatred.
“Wike’s threats must be seen for what they are: a clear and present danger to the security of Northern Nigeria and the entire nation.
The implications of Wike’s threats go beyond intra-party squabbles. They represent an existential threat to the peace and stability of Nigeria, particularly the Northern region.
“Wike’s behaviour is unbecoming of a member of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and is a disservice to the high office he occupies.
“His conduct undermines the very principles of democracy that your administration claims to uphold and sets a dangerous precedent for how political power is wielded in this country.
“We, the ADF, wish to place on record that we will not be held responsible for the consequences of Wike’s reckless utterances.
“The Northern people will not stand idly by while their peace is threatened by a Minister who seems to have lost all sense of decorum and responsibility.
“We will resist any attempts to destabilize our region, and protect our communities from any form of political arson.
“Wike must be cautioned. And we call on you, Mr. President, to take immediate action to address this matter.
“The ADF urges the National Security Adviser and other relevant security agencies to investigate Wike’s threats and to take the necessary steps to prevent any escalation of tensions.
“The peace and security of Northern Nigeria, and indeed all of Nigeria, must not be compromised by the reckless actions of a few.
“The Northern people will not take this threat lightly. We stand united against any attempt to undermine our peace and stability. The ADF will not tolerate any further acts of mischief or incitement from Nyesom Wike or anyone else.
“Mr. President, it is time to act decisively. The unity of this nation, the integrity of your administration, and the future of our democracy are at stake.”
The queues at filling stations for Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, may subside this week as PMS loading has resumed in Lagos depots.
Our correspondent reported on Saturday that the depot owners decided not to open for business because of the hunger protest that started on Thursday. Truck owners and drivers were also afraid of possible attacks while transporting fuel.
Oil marketers had also explained on Monday that the reappearance of queues at filling stations in many states was because of the halt in the supply of petroleum products by dealers in a bid to avert losing their assets due to the ongoing nationwide hunger protests.
Many states in Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, witnessed varying degrees of queues about two weeks ago, which the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited blamed on a “hitch in the discharge operations of a couple of vessels.”
While the company and stakeholders worked together to tackle the challenge, the nationwide protest against hunger and economic hardship commenced on Thursday, August 1, 2024, disrupting petrol supply again and causing the reappearance of queues in some states.
However, reliable sources at the depots told our correspondent on Monday that some trucks were loaded on Sunday and Monday to supply petrol across the country.
Officials of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority and other government agencies were reportedly at the depots to supervise the process.
It was learned that more fuel vessels berthed at the weekend and some depots were supplied.
“There were activities today in some depots that took fuel during the ongoing protest,” a source said.
Another official told our correspondent, “NMDPRA and other officials have been on duty since Thursday when the protest started, just that depots are being careful of the security of trucks and drivers on the road.”
The official added that the seemingly low protest across the country, especially in Lagos, had been boosting loading since Sunday.
The source said the queues in filling stations may start easing off from Monday, though not as it is supposed to be.
He, however, noted that the pump price of a litre of petrol might still be high till next week when supply would have been further boosted.
The PUNCH observed that many filling stations in the cities had not opened for business since the commencement of the hunger protest. Many Nigerians also decided to sit at home over fear of violence.
Many petrol depots were dry last week Sunday, leading to fuel scarcity and attendant queues in Lagos, Ogun, parts of Abuja, Niger, and some other states across the country.
It was noticed that black marketers took advantage of the situation, selling the product for as high as N1,300/litre and N1,500/litre in parts of Lagos and Ogun states.
NNPC had explained that the tightness in fuel supply and distribution witnessed in some parts of Lagos and the FCT was a result of a hitch in the discharge operations of a couple of vessels.
The NNPC Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, had stated that the company was “working round the clock with all stakeholders to resolve the situation and restore normalcy in the operations.”
President Bola Tinubu has called for dialogue and an immediate end to the nationwide protests that have rocked the nation since Thursday.
Tinubu, who said his administration is ready to listen to and address the concerns of protesters, affirmed that he has heard their calls “loud and clear”.
“I hereby enjoin protesters and the organisers to suspend any further protest and create room for dialogue, which I have always acceded to at the slightest opportunity,” he affirmed in a nationwide broadcast on Sunday morning on the #EndBadGovernance protests.
He said the country requires all hands on deck and needs all citizens, regardless of age, party, tribe, religion or other divides, to work together in reshaping its common destiny.
The 10-day planned protest, which began on Thursday, primarily against the rising cost of living and hunger, deteriorated into violence, destruction of property and loss of lives in many parts of the nation.
At least 17 persons were reported dead in the “days of rage” protests.
