The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a strict warning to bakeries nationwide to cease the use of saccharin and bromate in bread production.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, delivered the warning during a News Agency of Nigeria Forum, as reported on Sunday, emphasizing that bakeries caught using these harmful substances would face severe penalties.
“This is where our post-marketing surveillance comes into play,” she stated. “We routinely inspect products, sometimes based on complaints received through our reform office. We have shut down several bakeries for using bromate in bread production. If bromate use is detected or even suspected, the bakery will be closed immediately.”
Adeyeye also noted that numerous water-producing factories had been closed due to substandard or unhygienic practices.
She underscored the critical role of NAFDAC’s Regulatory Inspection Directorate in ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
“The Regulatory Inspection Directorate is essential in verifying that what is registered with us remains consistent in the market,” she explained. “Post-registration, some manufacturers may alter their processes or formulas. Our post-marketing surveillance ensures that standards are upheld and consumers are safeguarded.”
