Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has appealed to the organisers of the planned nationwide protest against hardship in the country, to reconsider their decision and shelve the idea so that the fragile peace in the country would not be disrupted.
Senator Barau, who doubles as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, said President Bola Tinubu was making genuine efforts to address the country’s challenges.
LEADERSHIP reports that the promoters of the protest have scheduled a nationwide demonstration for Thursday, August 1.
In a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy Senate President, Ismail Mudashir, on Sunday night, Barau urged the protest promoters to give the government more time to implement lofty programmes and policies of the administration as captured in the Renewed Hope Agenda for the country’s socio-economic development.
He said that since the government was inaugurated on May 29, 2023, it has diligently worked hard to restore the country’s glory and return it to the path of progress and prosperity for the benefit of all.
“As we all know, one year is not enough to address the challenges facing the country for decades. Various interventions have been rolled out, and more are being conceived by this administration. Short, medium and long-term measures are being put in place to tackle the challenges that have been with us for decades,” he said.
He said the recent signing of the North-West and South-East Development Commission Bills into law by President Tinubu was one of the measures to address the challenges facing all parts of the country.
He drew the attention of the promoters of the protest to how what started as peaceful demonstrations in Syria, Yemen, Libya and Sudan, turned bloody and took the countries backwards.
“Against this backdrop, l urge everyone to reflect deeply on the problem and reconsider the idea of a protest. There is a risk that the protest could be hijacked.
“This is our country; we have no place to go other than the Federal Republic of Nigeria bequeathed on us by our forefathers. Exercise more patience and allow for more time. We will get it right. The efforts of the new Government will yield the desired results, by the grace of God,” he stated.
Youths under the coalition of All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum, Kano State, have described the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin, as a bulldozer of the development of the Centre of Commerce.
Members of the forum from across the 44 local government areas of Kano State stated this when they paid a courtesy call to the deputy Senate president at the National Assembly yesterday, a statement by the special adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, said.
According to the statement, the event was attended by Senator Babangida Hussaini (APC, Jigawa), Senator Muntari Dandutse (APC, Katsina), Senator Ibrahim Lamido (APC, Sokoto) and a member of the House of Representatives, Dambatta/Makoda Federal Constituency of Kano State, Rep Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari.
Chairman of the forum, Hon Adamu Mukhtar, said the Deputy President of the Senate has always been at the forefront of the development of Kano State and the APC.
Urging him to sustain the tempo, he said they are working hard to unite the party in all the nooks and crannies of Kano State.
“You are the bulldozer of the development of Kano State. Please continue with the good work you are doing. Don’t relent. We are solidly behind you,” he said.
Stressing the importance of unity in the party, he said, “We will embark on a massive campaign across the 44 local government areas. Many youth who are members of the opposition parties have indicated interest in joining us in the APC.”
Responding, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin, commended the youth for mobilising for the party.
“This is a good initiative. This was what we did in the Second Republic. We mobilised for our party without having any intention to contest for elections. We were only after the success of our party. I’m happy you have embarked on the same journey,” he said.
He told the youth that the future of Kano and, indeed, the country is in their hands.
“The future of Kano and Nigeria politics is in your hands. The future is yours. Take this seriously. You will go places. We are with you 100 percent.
“I also urge you always to ensure that the right people are given the mantle of leadership, from ward to all levels. This is the way to go. If the right persons are given, victory, Insha Allah, will be ours. If we form government in Kano State, youth will be the greatest beneficiaries.
In their speeches, Senator Babangida Hussaini (APC, Jigawa), Senator Muntari Dandutse (APC, Katsina), Senator Ibrahim Lamido (APC, Sokoto) and a member of the House of Representatives, Dambatta/Makoda Federal Constituency of Kano State, Rep Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari, extolled the virtues of Senator Barau, describing him as a senator for all, committed to the development of the country.
