Senate President Godswill Akpabio has revealed that President Bola Tinubu appointed Nyesom Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) due to his exceptional competence and track record.
Akpabio noted that despite Wike being a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), President Tinubu was impressed by his achievements as Rivers State Governor.
The Senate President made these remarks on Friday during a book launch held in Port Harcourt to celebrate Wike’s 57th birthday.
In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio highlighted Wike’s remarkable impact on transforming Abuja within two years through extensive projects.
“Let me explain why President Tinubu included you in the Federal Executive Council, even as an opposition politician,” Akpabio said.
“Your exceptional performance as a local government chairman, Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Government, Minister, and two-term Governor earned you this role.
“You have made us proud as the FCT Minister, turning Abuja into a model city that truly represents a nation’s capital. You are a committed public servant with no tolerance for excuses when it comes to delivering results.
“In under two years, you’ve turned Abuja into a vibrant construction hub,” he added.
Akpabio commended Wike for his dedicated service to the nation in various leadership roles, describing him as a purposeful leader committed to uplifting communities and driving development.
“Today we gather to celebrate not just the years in your life, but the life in your years. We have come to honour not just the duration of your life but the donation of your life and the countless ways you’ve enriched the lives of the people around you.
“Born in the tumultuous year of 1967, when the fabric of our nation was being tested in the fires of conflict, you emerged, my dear Wike, not in the safety of calm waters but amid the storm itself. You might have chosen to arrive in more tranquil times, but instead, you bravely came forth into the fray.
“It is perhaps this very fortitude that has shaped your character, allowing you to rise like an eagle, soaring high above the tempests that beset us.
“As a two-term governor, you have been a leader of the people, a visionary who acts with purpose, and a friend whose care for others knows no bounds. Your dedication to uplifting communities, as a Governor and now as an Honourable Minister, has left an indelible mark upon our nation’s history.
“The bridges you have constructed—both of steel and of spirit—stand as testaments to your commitment to progress and unity. I recognized the fire within you long before you stepped into the public arena; you were, indeed, a secret waiting to be unveiled for the nation to behold.
“Your contributions to the political landscape of Nigeria, particularly during your governorship, shine like a beacon of hope. Your charismatic leadership and staunch advocacy for the rights of your constituents have focused on the pillars of infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
“Your passion for sports, particularly football, and your commitment to nurturing the talents of our youth reflect your unwavering belief in the potential of the next generation. You have earned a reputation as a leader of uncompromising integrity, speaking truth in every circumstance even when the winds of injustice howl around you like a tempest,” he stated.
Senator Akpabio also commended Wike‘s family for their support to the FCT Minister.
“Let us not forget, on this auspicious day, the steadfast support of your beloved wife. She has stood beside you through trials and triumphs alike, her strength and encouragement complementing your leadership in extraordinary ways. Together, you exemplify a partnership that inspires countless souls, proving that love and unity can elevate a leader’s impact to unparalleled heights.
“Now, let us take a moment to appreciate your infectious spirit, which has the power to lighten the gravest of discussions with your wit and charm. You remind us that politics is not merely a realm of policies and procedures; it is, at its core, about people—about laughter, camaraderie, and the shared joy of our communities.
“May this birthday bring you as much joy as you have bestowed upon others, and may you embrace even more adventures, more successes, and an ever-increasing momentum in your noble service to our beloved fatherland. Here’s to another year of making a difference, inspiring change, and, of course, sharing that signature smile that warms our hearts!” Akpabio added.
Amid the controversy surrounding the Paul OSA Ogbeboh Estate in Abuja, Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged individuals alleging land grabs by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to present valid proof of ownership.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Olayinka called on those spreading false claims to provide credible evidence, such as a Right of Occupancy or Certificate of Occupancy issued by the FCTA. He also cautioned social media activists against being used to disseminate misinformation.
“The most reasonable thing for anyone to do is to find out from both sides before going public with any issue,” he advised.
Olayinka specifically addressed a viral video concerning a plot of land located in Life Camp, identified as Plot No. 2241, Gwarimpa District, Cadastral Zone C02, Abuja, challenging those claiming ownership to substantiate their claims with legitimate documentation.
Olayinka said; “A construction company, Paulosa Nigeria Limited occupied the land as a temporary office, under a Temporary Right of Occupancy arrangement granted in 1984 (40 years ago).
“For 36 years, the company occupied the land, built permanent structures on it and rented them out without any approval from the government.
“On November 18, 2020, after occupying the land for 36 years without approval, Paulosa Nigeria Limited applied to the then Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, for the conversion of the Temporary Right of Occupancy to a Statutory Right of Occupancy.
“On February 1, 2023, approval was granted to Paulosa Nigeria Limited for a Statutory Right of Occupancy, subject to certain terms and conditions.
“Some of the terms and conditions are; payment of Ground Rent Per Square Meter Per Annum, which was N50K/m² from 2022 to 2023, amounting to N2,332,143; payment of Premium of N500/m², amounting to N11,660,715 and payment of Ground Rent from 1984 to 2021 (37 years), amounting to N43,144,645.
“However, for 20 months, Paulosa Nigeria Limited refused to comply with the terms and conditions for the approval.
“Consequent upon the failure of Paulosa Nigeria Limited to comply with the terms and conditions for approval granted for a Right of Occupancy on the said land, the approval was revoked on October 10, 2024, more than 20 months after it was given.
“From the above, it should be clear that Paulosa Nigeria Limited never at any time, owned the land.”
The Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele has said that one of the reasons President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is able to have a good sleep is because Godswill Akpabio is President of the Senate.
Senator Bamidele made this remarks on Monday as spokesperson for Senators who gathered at Akpabio’s Abuja residence to congratulate the Senate President on his 62nd birthday.
The brief event was impromptu but had in attendance the Management team of the National Assembly led by the newly-appointed Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, political associates, friends of Akpabio and staff of the Office of the Senate President led by the Chief of Staff, Sylvester Okonkwo, who presented birthday card and gifts on behalf of the staff.
Also in attendance were the Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu and notable private individuals.
Senator Bamidele said his colleagues were proud of Akpabio for providing good leadership as the Senate President.
“I know one of the reasons he (President Tinubu) is able to sleep well is because he has you (Akpabio) as the President of the Senate.
“He trusts you. He depends on you. He relies on you and he takes your words very seriously.
“Mr. President of the Senate, we are all very proud of you. I’m standing with my colleagues. I’m always privileged to speak on their behalf and I know I’m not saying anything other than what they expect me to say.
“We are very proud of you. We just want to thank you for who you are and we want to thank you for the kind of leadership that you provide,” Senator Bamidele said.
When asked to propose a toast on behalf of former and present Governors, Senator Adam Oshiomhole, who was a two-term Governor of Edo State said: “This evening, I’m asked to give a toast to a man, elected the President of the 10th Senate. His leadership of the Senate reminds all of us that regardless of the platform upon which we were elected and regardless of the party of the 109 Senatorial Districts that we come from, once we have arrived at the Senate, we became a symbol of one united Nigeria.
“And in moment like this, to speak of a man who had the appetite to tolerate debates and remind us that Senators are not meant to be stamerers and that democracy manifests better when there are controversies, not meant for the chicken-hearted, we must have courage to face issues, debate them, build consensus and arrive at something in the national interest. You don’t run away from difficult challenges. That is the message he (Akpabio) gave to us last week.”
Responding, Akpabio thanked his colleagues and other well-wishers for the gesture even though he had no plan for any event to mark his birthday.
Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas “to urgently assess the human rights impacts of Nigeria’s reform bills currently being discussed by the National Assembly including on Nigerians living in poverty.”
SERAP said, “any discussion and consideration of the tax reform bills must ensure full compliance with provisions of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended] and the country’s international human rights obligations and commitments.”
In the letter dated 7 December 2024 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “The assessments should be transparent, include public participation, and shape the provisions and measures that are ultimately passed. The outcome of any such assessments should be widely published.”
SERAP urged Mr Akpabio, and Mr Abbas “to pass a resolution directing Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to hold Nigeria’s state governors to account on their spending of trillions of naira of revenue derived from taxes including VATs collected by their states since 2015 and to ensure the recovery of any proceeds of corruption.”
The letter, read in part: “SERAP urges you to ensure the inclusion in the tax reform bills of transparency and accountability mechanisms to ensure that any revenue derived from taxes covered under the bills are not mismanaged, diverted or pocketed by politicians, their family members and close associates.
“SERAP notes that Nigerian authorities have the discretion to develop laws on taxation most appropriate to their circumstances.”
“However, the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended] and human rights and anticorruption treaties to which the country is a state party impose limits on the discretion of the authorities in the development of any such laws.”
“Our preliminary review of the provisions of the tax reform bills shows that the bills contain some provisions that are antithetical to human rights and the rule of law.”
“For example, section 28(2)(c) of the Tax Administration bill among others, requires financial institutions including banks to provide to tax authorities ‘the names, addresses, or any other information of new or existing customers.’”
“Under section 28(4), financial institutions must make ‘additional disclosure” about their customers ‘if it is required by a notice signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the relevant tax authority.’”
“These provisions, especially the phrases ‘any other information’ and ‘additional disclosure’, if implemented, could be used unjustifiably or arbitrarily to restrict the right to privacy of customers.”
“The risks of violations of human rights are illustrated by the absence in the bills of sufficient safeguards against abuse of access to personal data of customers.”
“The provisions also give little or no consideration to data protection, thereby increasing the risks of misuse by public authorities of a customer’s personal details including their home address.”
“Another troubling provision of the tax reform bills is section 57 of the Tax Administration bill which grants broad, extensive and intrusive powers to tax authorities which may be misused to undermine Nigerians’ human rights.”
“In particular, section 57(1) provides that ‘an authorised officer of the relevant tax authority shall have free access to all land, buildings, places, books and documents, in the custody or under the control of a person, public officer, or institution, for the purpose of inspecting the books or documents.’
“Such official will also have free access to ‘any property, process or matter which the officer considers necessary or relevant for the purpose of collecting any tax.’”
“Under subsection 2, ‘the relevant tax authority shall take immediate possession of [any] removable media and the related removable equipment or computer used to access the stored documents on the media in order to prevent the accidental or intentional destruction, removal or alteration of records and documents.’”
“Section 57(5) seems to pre-empt the nature of any judicial authorisation required for tax official ‘enter any private dwelling’ by prescribing that such authorisation will ‘be valid for a period of three months from the date of its issue or such lesser period as the judicial officer considers appropriate.’”
“Under subsection 6, the tax official is required to ‘produce the written authorisation and evidence of identity “on first entering the private dwelling’. The official will only produce such evidence subsequently if they consider it reasonable to do so.”
“These provisions are broadly worded and could be misused to violate Nigerians’ human rights.”
“The provisions also do not contain any special safeguards which means that the broad, extensive and intrusive powers granted to tax authorities could be arbitrarily exercised without any accountability.”
“Section 57 also does not contain any explicit provisions that would allow the court to examine the lawfulness or necessity of any authorisation before or after any entering.”
“The provisions of section 81 of the Tax Administration bill essentially oust the jurisdiction of the court in pending tax matters by stating that ‘the pendency of a legal proceeding shall not affect the performance of the duties or obligations of any taxable person under this Act or any other tax law.’”
“The provisions could be misused to infringe the rights to equality and the right of access to courts, denying the right of an effective remedy to any aggrieved party.”
“Several other provisions of the tax bills lack mechanisms for effective oversight and accountability, as required by the rule of law in a democratic society, thereby increasing the risks of abuse of power or arbitrariness. The provisions could be misused to violate Nigerians’ right to property and fair hearing.”
“The tax bills also do not seem to contain provisions for a fair balance between the authorities’ powers to collect taxes and the requirements of the protection of the individual’s fundamental rights.”
“The absence of provisions in the tax bills on meaningful judicial oversight and review and accountability procedures would also undermine the rights of Nigerians including to privacy and disproportionately affect disadvantaged and marginalized individuals and groups.”
“Under human rights law, states including Nigeria are required to make the promotion and protection of human rights central to their tax systems. Nigeria needs a rights-based tax system that works for the people and not the politicians, their family members and close associates.”
“The country also needs transparent, democratic and rights-aligned tax reforms to unlock the maximum available resources for the full realisation of human rights.”
“Furthermore, there are credible reports that several state governors continue to divert or mismanage the revenue derived from taxes, impeding the funding of public goods and services that are crucial for the progressive realisation of human rights.”
“In many states, millions of Nigerians continue to be denied access to essential public services such as water and basic sanitation while millions of children of school age roam the streets.”
“SERAP is concerned that growing reports of corruption in the use of tax revenue and other public resources continue to disproportionately affect poor Nigerians and other most vulnerable segments of the population.”
“SERAP is concerned that the opposition by some state governors against the tax reform bills may be politically motivated and reduce the tax payable to the national treasury. State governors should constructively engage in good faith in the processes to adopt a national tax system for the country.”
“We would be grateful if the recommended measures were taken in consideration of the tax reform bills.”
“If the offending provisions of the tax reform bills including those outlined above are not addressed and brought in conformity with human rights standards and safeguard, SERAP shall take all appropriate legal actions to compel you and other members of the National Assembly to comply with our request in the public interest.”
“SERAP notes that the tax reform bills, if properly aligned with human rights standards, would enhance the ability of the Federal Government, states and local governments to fulfil their human rights obligations and adequately fund public services essential for human rights.”
“However, without transparency and accountability, revenue derived from taxes may not be spent to combat poverty and fund development as well as provide essential public goods and services for Nigerians.”
“The National Assembly has the constitutional responsibility to conduct and publish human rights impact assessments of the tax reform bills to ensure that proposed reforms best protect, advance and fulfill people’s human rights.”
“SERAP also urges you to revise and repeal several of the provisions of the bills, particularly the Tax Administration bill.”
“SERAP urges you to include provisions in the tax reform bills that will ensure that Nigerians have access to all relevant data and information on fiscal policy and government revenues, including from the corporate sector.”
“According to our information, members of the National Assembly are currently discussing Nigeria’s tax bills which primarily aim to ‘provide uniform procedures for a consistent and efficient administration of tax laws in order to- (a) facilitate tax compliance by taxpayers; and (b) optimise tax revenue.’

Akpabio gave the assurance on Thursday when members of the Code of Conduct Bureau, led by its Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Bello, paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
The Senate President acknowledged the relevance of the CCB, describing it as a “very important agency of government, not only in terms of bringing about moral rectitude but also in terms of discipline of public officers and ensuring accountability.”
“We don’t normally clear any public officer in the Senate unless we are assured that the person has attached acknowledgement form of his declaration of assets before the Code of Conduct Bureau.
“We are happy that you have enunciated the vision of what you want to do because if you don’t have a conducive working environment, there is no way you could achieve much”, Akpabio said.
On the complaint of inadequate budgetary allocation, the Senate President told the delegation that it had come to the right place and at the right time.
“We will engage those who are involved in bringing budgetary estimates before the National Assembly. We will engage them to let them know that the Code of Conduct Bureau cannot be stifled of fund otherwise it will not achieve much for the country.
“We have taken serious parliamentary note of your requests and we will definitely do something and get back to you as soon as possible.
“I assure you of our readiness to work with you and the entirety of the Bureau to achieve the aims for which the agency is set up. I appreciate this visit and I assure you of our collaboration,” he said.
Earlier, the CCB chairman who led the delegation, Dr Abdullahi Bello told the Senate President of the many challenges facing the Bureau and pleaded for the intervention of the Senate.
The challenges, according to him, included inadequate funding and issues about office accommodation, manpower and logistics.

Senate on Thursday declared that it will not be intimidated to suspend or withdraw the Tax Reform Bills forwarded to it by the executive arm of government, reiterating its commitment to advance legislative processes on the documents.
Speaking during plenary on the reported withdrawal of the bills, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio said the Red Chamber remains focused on its mandate to represent Nigerians’ interests and will not be intimidated by external pressures.
Akpabio, who was responding to the Point of Order raised by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC Ekiti Central), over the media reports that the bills have either been suspended or withdrawn, dismissed any attempts to pressure the chamber from taking such action, moreso when they are Executive bills.
“The Senate cannot be bullied. Any reform that we are convinced serves the interest of Nigerians will proceed. These bills contain provisions that are in the best interest of the public,” he said.
Akpabio declared that the Senate was not in a hurry and would do a thorough job on the bills, just as it has taken further legislative actions on them, including the formation of a special committee representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to engage with the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN to address contentious issues.
The Senate President explained that public hearings and consultations with stakeholders, including governors, traditional and religious leaders, as well as business leaders are imperative to resolve any uncertainties.
“If six weeks is insufficient, we will extend the time. We are committed to transparency and addressing all concerns,” he said.
Earlier, the Senate Leader had equally cautioned against misinformation from social media or media reports, urging the public to focus on facts.
“We have not suspended or withdrawn deliberations on the tax reform bills. Any attempt to intimidate the Senate is undemocratic. These bills are executive communications, and only the executive arm can withdraw them. We remain steadfast in our legislative responsibilities,” Senator Bamidele said.
While underscoring the legislature’s independence, he said “we don’t take orders from anyone or any office, no matter how highly placed.”
Continuing he said, “I felt it would be important to place on record that Senate did not suspend or withdraw the tax reform bills. I will address that later, this Senate did not suspend and does not intend to suspend deliberations, consideration of the tax reform bills as to withdraw, Mr president this is simply my response.
“It was a misunderstanding of legislative process for anybody to have even reported that we had withdrawn the bills, the bills were Executive bills transmitted to us by the Executive arm of government through the office of Mr President, it’s only the Executive arm that can withdraw these bills they are not private member bills sponsored by any senator, So, no senator is going to withdraw the bills and there’s no reason for these bills to be withdrawn.”
He further explained,”In the legislative process, it is normal that some people will have concern. It is normal that people will sit around those concerns and discourse. That is why in its wisdom, this Senate in referring this matter to the Senate committee on finance, gave them as much as six weeks.
“Our instruction was that: Deliberate, organize, I mean, publicly and submit your report not more than, not later than six weeks. It might not be up to six weeks, but if they choose to be up to six weeks, nobody will quarrel with them. Six weeks is long enough in a country that wants progress for a consensus to be reached, for anybody who has concern to sit down and allow such concern to be addressed in overriding public interest.
“And in any case, Mr. President and distinguished colleagues, we are continuing with the deliberation, with the consideration of this bill. We do all, I expected the media to report yesterday, which was well reported by some sections of the media, was that the Senate at its plenary session yesterday. took a further legislative action in the consideration of the bill. And what was the further legislative action that we took?
“From Northwest of Adamo Aleros, through the North central of Abba Moros, to the Southeast of Orji Uzo-Kalu, we drew out people, distinguished senators, from each. geopolitical zone. And we constituted them into an Ad Hoc Committee to, on our behalf, further interface. We were clear about what we were doing.
“The Senate Committee on Finance is in charge of public hearing. But we set up an Ad Hoc Committee as a further legislative action to, on our behalf, interface. Even the President of the country, I mean, called on us to please, I mean, interface with the Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, which also would have done in our public hearing. But even then, I mean, the Executive requested for that. And we have set up an Ad Hoc Committee to do that. ”
.Sacks Chief Whip Tahir Monguno from 10-man C’ttee
In another development, the Senate on Thursday announced the removal of its Chief Whip, Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, representing, Borno North from the 10-man committee constituted to interface with the Presidency on the Tax Reform Bills.
His sack came barely 24 hours after the committee’s formation.
This decision came after the Senate Leader, Sen. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), replaced him with Sen. Shehu Kaka (APC, Borno Central).
The committee, still led by Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), retains its original members, including Sen. Adamu Ailero (PDP, Kebbi Central), Sen. Orji Kalu (APC, Abia North), Sen. Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa West), Sen. Titus Zam (APC, Benue South), Sen. Abdullahi Yahaya (PDP, Kebbi North), Sen. Adeola Olamilekan (APC, Ogun West), Sen. The tax reform bills have faced stiff opposition in the National Assembly.
.South-South Senators back bills

The legislators under the aegis of the South-South Senators’ Forum emphasised the importance of tax reforms in boosting national revenue and fostering economic stability.
The bills are the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2024 -SB.583; the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, 2024- SB.584; and the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, 2024- SB. 585; and the Nigeria Tax Bill, 2024 – SB.586.

Besides, they urged governors from the South-South to work collaboratively with lawmakers to refine the bills for mutual benefit.
The Senators, representing Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Edo, Cross River, Delta, and Rivers States, passed a vote of confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio, praising his leadership in advancing the Senate’s constitutional mandate.
The Forum asked stakeholders to avoid introducing regional, ethnic, or tribal sentiments into the national dialogue, advocating for robust interactions and consultations in the legislative process.

The Senators reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a legislative agenda that ensures the peace, prosperity, and progress of the nation while addressing the unique needs of the South-South region.
.Tax reforms ‘ll bring progress to Nigeria – NOA
Mr Lanre Issa-Onilu, the Director-General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), says the proposed tax reform bill will bring progress and yield positive results to Nigerians.
He stated this at the inauguration of a nationwide sensitisation campaign on five critical national issues, on Thursday in Gombe.
The campaign, themed: “Promoting Awareness, Ethical Values and National Development,” is designed to promote unity and foster a more informed, secured and ethical society.
The five national issues are: World HIV/AIDS Day, security awareness, shunning the get-rich-quick syndrome, World Human Rights Day and tax reforms.
Represented by Nuru Yusuf-Kobi, Director of Planning, Research and Strategy, NOA headquarters, Issa-Onilu said the tax reform would benefit Nigerians and stimulate economic growth in the country.
He said the reforms seek to streamline tax administration and ease the burden on low-income earners, adding that President Bola Tinubu meant well for the citizens, hence initiated reforms that would benefit Nigerians and ensure economic prosperity.
“The tax reforms is for the good of the country and Nigerians. Based on these reforms, tax revenue will be used to improve essential public services like schools, hospitals and infrastructure, ensuring citizens see the benefits of their contributions.
“These reforms are designed to ease the burden on hardworking Nigerians while ensuring everyone contributes fairly,” he said.
The NOA boss said the reforms would address multiple taxation, which has been a major impediments to business community as well as make tax processes more transparent.
According to him, new digital systems will be introduce to make tax payments easier, faster and more accountable when the reforms are implemented.
He urged Nigerians to support government’s policies and programmes aimed at reforming the country for the good of the citizens.
“By supporting these efforts, we can create a tax system that not only works for all but also funds development projects to enhance our nation’s progress.”
Also speaking, Mrs Adaline Patari, the NOA Director in Gombe State, emphasised the need for the people to support the government to deliver on its mandate.
She said the Tinubu-led administration was working for the interest of Nigerians, adding that the agency would intensify sensitisation to mobilise participation in government’s efforts to ensure a brighter future for all.
Sanwo-Olu refutes claims that Lagos will benefit most
HOWEVER, Lagos state Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has refuted claims that Lagos will benefit most from proposed tax reforms.
This was contained in a report by NAN during an interview on the sidelines of the Africa Investment Forum Market Days 2024 in Morocco on Wednesday.
The Governor urged Nigerians to take time to understand the provisions of the reforms, countering claims that Lagos would be the primary beneficiary.
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum had on December 2, said the proposed Value-Added Tax (VAT) sharing model in the tax reform bills will only benefit Lagos and Rivers states.
However, Sanwo-Olu said the statement is untrue, adding that the reforms would require everyone to work harder to realize their full benefits.
“What those uncomfortable with the tax reform are not willing to accept is that there is no way of making an omelette without breaking the egg,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“You cannot make changes if the reforms are not set in. I have advised that people should take time to read the provisions of the reforms very well and to fully understand what they’re trying to do.
“I have seen comments around. Comments like Lagos is going to be the major beneficiary. It is not true. Lagos is actually going to get less in some places, but on a larger scale basis, we see it as a global thing for a better governance structure.
“All of us will play better and we’ll be able to discipline ourselves more. Some of the things that you will see is that you need to work harder for you to get the full benefit of the reform. So it’s not just an easy kill.”
According to Sanwo-Olu, while Lagos state may face some losses in certain areas, it will also gain greater opportunities to play a more significant role.
He stressed the urgent need for reform, pointing out Nigeria has low tax-to-GDP ratio, which ranks among the lowest globally.
The Governor expressed optimism that the proposed reforms would unlock significant opportunities for all states and non-governmental actors.
He reassured Nigerians that the reforms are not intended to hurt anyone but to foster a fair and inclusive system that benefits everyone.
“I have a positive attitude to it. I see it as a very wonderful reform. Tax-to-GDP ratio in Nigeria is one of the lowest in the world.
“So, there are a few things that need to happen, and like I keep saying, not only when you make those changes, you will not be able to see the opportunities that are found in your account.
“We really need to be bullish. We need to be encouraging ourselves and know that the intention is not to hurt anybody. This, I am very sure of.
“The intention is to better a lot, but not just better a lot of one person or one set of people. It’s for all of us, and so we should look at it this way.”
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio on Thursday said the Senate has not withdrawn the Tax Reform Bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking during plenary at the upper chamber, Akpabio said the Senate cannot be bullied or intimidated.
Reacting to the point of order raised by a senate leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, Akpabio said the bills are in the interest of Nigerians.
According to Akpabio: “The Senate cannot be bullied. Any reform that we are convinced serves the interest of Nigerians will proceed. These bills contain provisions that are in the best interest of the public.
“We have not suspended or withdrawn deliberations on the tax reform bills. Any attempt to intimidate the Senate is undemocratic.
“These bills are executive communications, and only the executive arm can withdraw them. We remain steadfast in our legislative responsibilities.
“We don’t take orders from anyone or any office, no matter how highly placed.”
Some prominent Nigerians and politicians have stormed Akwa Ibom State for the burial of Governor Umo Eno’s wife, Patience.
The ceremony, which is holding at Ikot Ekpene Udo in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of the state, has a large gathering of eminent personalities in attendance.
In attendance are Vice President Kashim Shettima, who is representing President Bola Tinubu; former President Goodluck Jonathan; and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Others are Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State, his counterparts in Abia and Imo states, Alex Otti and Hope Uzodimma, the acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Umar Damagum, among others.
The Akwa Ibom first lady, Patience Eno passed away on September 26, 2024, after a brief illness.
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio at the weekend again acknowledged the current challenges in the country but assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu’s government would leave behind a lasting legacy that will guarantee a better future.
Speaking at the University of Calabar, UNICAL ’87 Law Class Re-Union 2024 in Calabar, Akpabio said the current difficulties that Nigerians are going through were the results of past maladministration in the country.
The Senate President,, a law graduate of the University of Calabar, said: “The difficulties we are witnessing in our nation today were not caused by the present administration. These are as a result of years of maladministration.
“Any country that does not have backbone infrastructure, you don’t have something to develop, you don’t save for the raining day, when there is economic malaise such as we are witnessing in the world today, such country is bound to be affected.
“The good news is b under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we have hope today, that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The things that we are trying to do now, we are doing it for posterity. Not for ourselves. Be assured that this administration will leave behind lasting legacies that will guarantee a better future.”
Earlier, Akpabio led his old classmates to pay separate courtesy visits to the Governor of Cross River State, Prince Bassey Otu and the Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, Professor Florence Obi, who later narrated legion of challenges currently facing the institution, particularly in the the area of infrastructure.
He told the university management that the ’87 Law Class decided to congregate at the institution primarily to do an evaluation on the state of affairs of their alma mater and to see how best they could be of assistance to the institution that nurtured them.
Akpabio announced, on behalf of the ’87 Law Class, donation of two Coaster buses for the Faculty of Law and UNICAL Student Union Government (SUG).
Otu, also a UNICAL graduate, assured the ’87 Law Class that visited him that the government of Cross River State would partner with them on whatever they planned to do for the institution.
“We want to look at what you will do and Cross River State will also partner with you and add to whatever you are going to do,” Governor Otu said.
Also speaking at the re-union, the Patron of the ’87 Law Class, Justice Okon Abang of the Court of Appeal, observed that the journey of his former classmates to the level they are now had not been without challenges.
“As I reflect on the accomplishment of this class, I am overwhelmed by how much we have collectively contributed to the legal profession and to the progress of our great nation and the entire commonwealth of nations,” Justice Abang said.
Activist lawyer, Maduabuchi Idam, on Saturday, said the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, should vacate the Senate following the resurfaced video of him saying people should eat wherever they see food.
The footage of Akpabio had generated uproar in the social media space with Nigerians calling for his removal from office.
Faulting Akpabio’s remarks, Idam recalled how the Senate President dished out two million to senators for enjoyment.
To this end, the constitutional lawyer charged Nigerians to hold their leaders responsible for their conduct and demand apologies for misconduct in office.
In a statement, Idam said: “Saying that “Nigerians should eat wherever they find food” was quite an honest advice but sadly hypocritical advice, given that the advisor does not and would not eat just anywhere he finds food.
“A Senate President who announced braggingly before Nigerians that he would be enjoying and watching from television with his family while hungry Nigerians are protesting as a result of hunger had long stripped himself of empathy or emotion.
“I will not chide the fact that he had sent monies in the form of “prayers” into his colleagues’ bank accounts described as “Mail Boxes” brazenly, for the purpose of enjoyment during vacation. The details of the monies sent and its sources are still being questioned before Court 12 of the Federal High Court Abuja Division, in suit No.FHC/ABJ/CS/1394/2023, Maduabuchi O. Idam Vs. The Senate President of Nigeria. So, I will not speak further on that subject since the matter is subjudice, i.e., pending in court.
“Until Nigerians learn to demand that leaders quit their positions (if found to have misconducted themselves), or demand an apology for an infamous conduct exhibited while in public positions, institutions will remain a joke.
“These and many more are the reasons our supposed hallowed National Assembly is recklessly disregarded, disrespected, scorned and lampooned by even common citizens. Hence, those who are invited for one reason or the other, shun the invitation without fear or repercussions. After all, the majority of its principal officers and those in the cabinet have also snubbed its invitations in the past.
“The pride of the National Assembly must be earned in character and the conduct of its officers. Therefore, indecorous conduct exhibited by officers of the National Assembly must not be treated as a stage play.”
Senators on Thursday passed a vote of confidence on the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
This is coming in the wake of reports that his colleagues have plans to impeach him.
Reports made the rounds on Wednesday that the presidency had drafted a large number of operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, into the National Assembly Complex to stop Senators from performing their constitutional responsibilities including a plot to remove Akpabio as the Senate President.
Akpabio, had, however, denied the report, stressing that the senate remained united.
In a statement, the presidency also said there were no impeachment threats against Akpabio.
Senators have passed a vote of confidence in the President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, and the entire leadership of the 10th Senate.
The confidence vote, which was passed on Thursday during plenary, came barely 24 hours after Wednesday’s false news report by some media platforms that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) took over the National Assembly to prevent a plan to impeach Akpabio.
