Italian Jannik Sinner finished an incredible season by winning the Davis Cup for his nation for the second time in a row on Sunday, defeating the Netherlands 2-0 in the final in Malaga, in southern Spain.
After Matteo Berrettini easily defeated Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4 6-2 in the opening singles match, world number one Sinner completed the victory with a dominant performance, defeating Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(2) 6-2 in the second round.
After winning last year and in 1976, it was Italy’s third championship in the top men’s team competition.
Sinner captained a season in which he won two Grand Slam championships by leading Italy to another victory a week after winning the ATP Finals title.
After making it to the final for the first time, Paul Haarhuis’ Netherlands were hoping to win their first championship in 104 years, but they were easily defeated by favourites Italy.
An inspired Berrettini never got going against van de Zandschulp, who earlier in the week put an end to Rafa Nadal’s illustrious career.
Sinner maintained his spotless record in this week’s competition by defeating Griekspoor in the second set after being kept on his toes in a fiercely contested first set.
