South African Football Association (SAFA) President Dr Danny Jordaan has congratulated the country’s women players for continuing to hoist the nation’s flag high in 2024.
Banyana Banyana and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Andile Dlamini was nominated for the CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award in Morocco a few days ago in the 2024 CAF Awards and while she lost out to eventual winner Chiamaka Nnadozie from Nigeria, the SAFA President said he was pleased by her growth alongside other South African players.
There was further recognition for Dlamini, Lebohang Ramalepe, Karabo Dhlamini and Banyana Banyana midfielder Linda Motlhalo after they were named in the CAF Women’s Best XI.
“We wish to congratulate all these players and many others for the sterling effort they delivered in 2024, and over the years,” Dr Jordaan said.
The SAFA President further congratulated Sundowns after they were crowned Hollywoodbets Super League champions a few days ago. The team wrapped up their campaign in style with a 2-0 win over the University of the Western Cape (UWC) courtesy of goals from Andisiwe Mgcoyi and Lehlogonolo Mashigo at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
In a letter sent by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to his SAFA counterpart, he congratulated the Hollywoodbets Super League champions and also thanked the Association’s dedication to the development of women’s football in South Africa.
“By means of this letter, I am pleased to congratulate the new women’s football champions of South Africa, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies FC!,” the FIFA President said.
“Their constant efforts and results throughout the season have paid off, resulting in this important title. Congratulations to each and every member of the team and of the club for this great achievement.
While thanking you and your Association for your continuous support, work, and dedication for the development of women’s football in your country, I look forward, dear President, to seeing you again soon,” he said.
