Police Send Abuja Man For Mental Evaluation

by admin

A middle-aged man, Shuaibu Alhaji Yushau, who climbed a high broadband mast at Aso Radio in Katampe, Abuja, in an apparent suicide attempt on Monday has been sent for a mental evaluation at the Social Development Secretariat (SDS).

Yushau was taken into the custody of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command after he was persuaded to descend from the mast but police said he will undergo a mental assessment to determine his state of mind.

Eyewitnesses reported that Yushau’s actions caused widespread panic and alarm among residents and passersby when he was spotted on the mast on Monday.

Police were promptly alerted, and officers were dispatched to the scene to negotiate with Yushau who later descended after hours of persuasion and was promptly taken into custody.

FCT.s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, in an update on Tuesday stated that Yushau would be charged with attempted suicide, disturbance of public peace, and incitement, if he is found to be mentally stable after the evaluation.

“The suspect, if found to be mentally stable after the test, will be charged in court for attempted suicide, disturbance of public peace, and incitement contrary to Sections 231, 111, and 114 of the Penal Code Act,” Adeh said.

Commissioner of Police for the FCT, CP Benneth Igweh, urged residents to remain law-abiding while emphasising that the police would not tolerate any actions that could lead to a breakdown of law and order.

Recall that LEADERSHIP reported that Yushau climbed the broadcast mast of Aso Radio and Television on Katampe Hill in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday, threatening to jump down unless the Federal Government restores the fuel subsidy and addresses the nation’s insecurity.

Yusuf, who displayed his demands on a placard at the mast’s peak, stated that he was acting on behalf of suffering Nigerians.
