Barcelona playmaker Pedri extended his contract on Thursday by four years, through June 2030.
The deal is a positive move for club president Joan Laporta, who has been under fire for her handling of the Dani Olmo scandal,
The 22-year-old Pedri, who has stood in for the late club great Andres Iniesta, was heralded as a bright future prospect at the age of 16.
Along with Laporta and Barcelona sports director Deco, Pedri signed the contract, according to the club’s website.
He was a member of Spain’s 2024 European championship winning squad.
Since the national league decided that Barcelona had not registered summer acquisitions Olmo and Pau Victor in a timely manner, Laporta has been under pressure at the club. Both of them are currently in possession of temporary playing licenses.
On Wednesday, Barcelona, under the leadership of Hansi Flick, took second place in the 36-team Champions League; nevertheless, the Blaugrana now trail Real Madrid in La Liga by seven points.
