The Niger State Police Command has cracked a baby trafficking ring, rescuing a six-month-old infant from the jaws of exploitation and bringing four suspects including the baby’s cousin to justice.
The baby’s mother had left her child in the care of her cousin, Joy Nuwa, late Saturday while she stepped out to run an errand.
It was gathered that when the mother returned, she discovered that both the baby and Joy were no where to be found.
She was said to have immediately contacted Joy, who claimed to have left the baby in the house and locked the door.
However, upon investigation, it was revealed that there was no break-in and the door was still locked and the issue was reported to the police in the area.
Confirming the development, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun in a statement said on 25th January 2025, at about 9am, Police operatives attached to Maje Division arrested four suspects in connection with the issue.
The suspects include Joy Nuwa, 20yrs of Nasarawa, Favour James, 25yrs of Kwamba, Ezekiel Emmanuel, 30yrs, Kwamba, Patience Obana, 23yrs of Kubwa, Abuja
“Upon the return of the mother, she discovered that the baby and Joy were not at home, and she immediately contacted the said cousin who claimed that she left the baby in the house and locked the door”.
In the course of investigation, Abiodun disclosed that it was discovered that there was no breaking into the room, which led to interrogation of neighbors.
“Emmanuel Ezekiel and Favour James of the same compound were arrested. Emmanuel confessed that they conspired with Joy and took the baby to one Patience Obana of Kubwa, FCT Abuja to facilitate the sale of the baby, “he stated.
According to the command, the said Joy, Favour and Patience were later arrested through Emmanuel and the baby was rescued unhurt.
All suspects have been transferred to SCID Minna, for further investigation and diligent prosecution..
