After a stellar playing career, Michael Essien has found a new calling: coaching. Since 2020, the former Ghanaian midfielder has been serving as an assistant coach at FC Nordsjaelland, a Danish top-flight team known for its unique approach to nurturing young talent.
Essien’s journey to Denmark began with a simple conversation. “I’ve known the founder, Tom Vernon, for a very long time, since I was 17 or 18,” he explained. “When I stopped playing, he messaged me and said, ‘What are you doing?’ I said, ‘I think I’m done playing.’ And he said, ‘OK, maybe you should come and look around the place.’”
Essien was instantly impressed by the club’s commitment to youth development. “I love how they develop their boys here, giving very young boys the opportunity to experience professional football. It’s calmer; the environment is very nice and very healthy. Everyone is ready to help whenever you need.”
While the idea of becoming a head coach someday isn’t off the table, Essien is content with his current role. “I’m not thinking about being a head coach. Not yet. But when I get there, I will develop my style of play around the FCN model. I have a few more years to go. Let’s see. Maybe I will get there.”
“I’ve done football my whole life, and I think that’s what I do best. I should start doing something just to keep my routine going,” he said.
Essien’s transition to coaching is grounded in his passion for football and a desire to give back.
