Real Madrid defeated visitors Las Palmas 4-1 on Sunday, thanks to two goals from Kylian Mbappe, who was in outstanding form and helped the champions take the top spot in the La Liga standings.
Third-place Barcelona is now seven points behind Real Madrid after they were beaten to a 1-1 draw by Getafe.
Real jumped ahead of Atletico Madrid, who were shocked 1-0 at lowly Leganes on Saturday, to take the lead with 46 points, two points clear of their local rivals in second.
Twenty-five seconds after beginning, Fabio Silva headed home a Sandro cross for Las Palmas, shocking Carlo Ancelotti’s team.
However, Real applied more pressure, and Mbappe levelled from the penalty spot in the eighteenth minute after Rodrygo was fouled.
When Vinicius Jr. was suspended for the first of two league games following his red card against Valencia, Mbappe took over as the driving force behind Real Madrid’s attack.
He had one of his best all-around performances since moving to the Spanish capital from Paris St. Germain last year.
Las Palmas keeper Jasper Cillessen had to put in a lot of effort to hold Real Madrid at bay since Mbappe was apparently everywhere on the pitch and had good connections with Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo.
Cillessen wonderfully stopped Mbappe’s rocket effort from the box’s edge after he sprinted past three players, but Lucas Vazquez picked down the rebound and placed it on a plate for Brahim Diaz to tap into the empty net for Real Madrid’s second goal of the game.
Rodrygo scored the fourth goal on a fast counterattack in the 57th minute, and Mbappe added to their lead three minutes later with a great first-time shot into the top corner from a cross.
Benito Ramirez, a replacement, was sent off straight away for a studs-up tackle on Lucas Vazquez in the 64th minute, reducing Las Palmas to 10 men.
Mbappe, Bellingham, and Federico Valverde all had three attempts disallowed by the VAR for offsides throughout the build-up, even though Real Madrid had taken their foot off the throttle.
