Ademola Lookman’s late goal gave Atalanta a spirited 2-1 victory over AC Milan on Friday, sending the home team to the top of Serie A.
A corner flew across the box three minutes before the end, and an unguarded Lookman headed in the game-winning goal for Atalanta.
With 34 points from the victory, the hosts are now two points ahead of Napoli, who will visit Lazio on Sunday. Milan has 22 points and is in sixth place.
With the victory, Atalanta tied their win streak of nine games in Serie A, which they had held from February to July 2020.
Both Milan and Atalanta got off to a strong start, creating chances in the first few minutes, which was a harbinger of things to come.
Atalanta custodian Marco Carnesecchi denied Christian Pulisic’s angled attempt in the first few seconds, and the ball flew over the bar after Mario Pasalic missed a close-range chance for the home team.
When Alvaro Morata struck the net in the seventh minute, Milan appeared to have grabbed the lead, but the offside flag ended his jubilation.
After 12 minutes, Charles De Ketelaere, a former Milan player, finished a superbly placed corner and leaped his marker to put Atalanta ahead.
Rafael Leao fired a cross into the box ten minutes later, and Morata stroked it in from close range to give Milan the equaliser.
Just before halftime, Pulisic hobbled off the pitch after what appeared to be an unlucky slip after making contact with an Atalanta player, raising concerns about Milan’s injury situation.
Two members of the medical staff assisted him off the pitch after he was replaced because the pain was too great for him to bear after receiving treatment from them.
Both teams created multiple chances in the fiercely contested second half, and Milan custodian Mike Maignan saved Atalanta from scoring a third goal in stoppage time.
