Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has weighed in on the challenges facing Ghanaian football, particularly the struggles of the national team, the Black Stars. Speaking during a recent interview, Nyantakyi expressed optimism about the future of the sport in Ghana, provided that strategic planning and collaboration between stakeholders are prioritized.
“Ghana’s football problems are not insurmountable,” Nyantakyi stated. “With a clear plan, well-defined goals, and effective collaboration between the management committee and the coach, we can return to our glory days.”
Nyantakyi’s remarks come at a time when public discourse about the Black Stars’ underwhelming performances has been rife with speculation about spiritual forces and superstition. The former GFA president dismissed these notions, asserting that the solution lies in practical steps and sound management, rather than attributing failures to supernatural influences.
During his tenure, which spanned over a decade, Nyantakyi oversaw one of the most successful periods in Ghanaian football history. Under his leadership, the Black Stars qualified for three consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments in 2006, 2010, and 2014—a feat unmatched in the nation’s football history. He attributed this success to careful planning, structured decision-making, and a cohesive team effort.
“Qualifying for three consecutive World Cups was no accident,” Nyantakyi said. “It was the result of deliberate planning, disciplined execution, and unity among all stakeholders.”
Nyantakyi emphasized the importance of setting clear objectives for the Black Stars’ technical team and players. He called for the development of long-term plans that include investment in grassroots football, enhanced coaching programs, and the establishment of a robust scouting system to identify and nurture young talent.
As the GFA continues to navigate its challenges, the former president’s vision of strategic planning and collaboration serves as a blueprint for rejuvenating the sport. With Ghana’s passionate football fans yearning for a return to international prominence, the call to action is clear: a collective effort is needed to restore the Black Stars to their former glory.
