The Director General of the Special Services Directorate at the Kano State Government House, AVM Ibrahim Umar (rtd), has announced that Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf will launch the Emblem Appeal Fund on Monday.
AVM Umar made this known during a press briefing on Friday, where he outlined activities planned for the 2025 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFRD).
He revealed that the governor would also lead a Wreath-Laying Ceremony on Wednesday, alongside security chiefs and other key stakeholders, at Dotsa Village in Kumbotso Local Government Area.
“Following the Wreath-Laying Ceremony, a reception and cocktail party will be held in honor of the Nigerian Legion at the state secretariat,” he added.
AVM Umar explained that the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 15, honors the sacrifices of Nigerian servicemen, including veterans of World Wars I and II, and the Nigerian Civil War.
In 2024, the event was renamed “Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day” to include the celebration of active service members and the remembrance of fallen heroes.
He further noted that while other Commonwealth nations commemorate the day on January 12, Nigeria observes it on January 15 to mark the end of the Nigerian Civil War.
The director general highlighted that the day also serves as an opportunity to provide relief to soldiers injured in counter-terrorism operations in the Northeast and other security challenges across the country.
Despite these challenges, he commended the unwavering dedication of Nigerian soldiers to their patriotic duty.
Governor Yusuf, he added, deeply appreciates the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces to ensure the safety of citizens.
AVM Umar also acknowledged the strong collaboration between his office and the media, promising to maintain this partnership for the benefit of Kano State residents.
