Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran has been charged by the Football Association (FA) with “acting in an improper manner” following his dismissal during the Boxing Day clash against Newcastle United.
The 21-year-old Colombian forward reacted angrily after being shown a red card in the first half by referee Anthony Taylor for an alleged stamp on Newcastle defender Fabian Schar. As he exited the pitch at St James’ Park, Duran kicked a water bottle on the touchline, an action that has now led to the FA charge.
Duran is already serving a three-match suspension for the red card, ruling him out of Villa’s recent 2-2 draw against Brighton at Villa Park. He will also miss the upcoming Premier League fixture against Leicester City and the FA Cup tie against West Ham United.
The FA has given Duran until Friday, 3 January, to respond to the charge.
Aston Villa, who suffered a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle after Duran’s dismissal, have not yet commented publicly on the matter.
Villa manager Unai Emery will now need to navigate the next two fixtures without the services of Duran, as the club aims to stay competitive in both domestic and cup competitions.
