Gambia will play Comoros at Stade Municipal de Berkane on Friday in the penultimate match of Group A of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
In a hotly contested group, both teams are separated by just one point and one slot after settling for a 1-1 draw in the rematch.
The Gambia’s first victory of the qualification series during the October window was a major step in their bid to qualify for a third consecutive AFCON tournament.
For Johnny McKinstry’s team to have a chance of finishing in the top two, they must win both of their remaining games against Comoros and Tunisia. However, their prospects may be hampered if Gambia does not have enough home support in either game.
Comoros’ doubleheader against Tunisia last month earned them four points, keeping them one point behind group leaders Tunisia and making them the only team in Group A that has not lost.
Rafiki Said’s goal gave Les Coelacantes the victory away in Tunisia, but they were defeated to a 1-1 draw at home in the return leg a few days later.
Comoros would just be the second team in the previous 12 tournament iterations to make it to the finals if they were to qualify for AFCON 2025.
