Nigeria’s U-20 men’s team, the Flying Eagles, will on Tuesday depart the country for the 2024 WAFU B U20 Championship in Lome, Togo.
The team’s media officer, Sharif Abdallah, stated that 20 of the 27 players in camp will travel.
He also mentioned that the team has not scheduled any pre-tournament drills before they begin Group B play on October 18, which also includes Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast, and begin their defence of the title they won in the Niger Republic two years ago.
The Flying Eagles relocated to Ikenne, Ogun State, for a one-week final camping program at the elite Remo Sports Institute, following a three-week selection process in Abuja.
Since arriving in Ikenne, the 2023 FIFA World Cup quarterfinalists have participated in two friendly matches, winning both of them 4-1 against Seamoriow FC and 2-1 against Grass Runners Academy.
The competition, which takes place from October 17 to October 31, pits hosts Togo against Ghana, Benin Republic, and Niger Republic in Group A.
This competition acts as a qualifying round for the Africa U20 Cup of Nations the following year, from which the top four teams will represent Africa at the FIFA U20 World Cup finals in Chile.
