The Zambia U17 Women’s National Team narrowly fell 1-0 to Brazil in their opening Group D match under the Felix Sanchez Stadium lights at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Dominican Republic 2024.
An 18th minute strike from USA-based Brazil striker Juju Harris proved to be the difference in a tightly contested encounter where the Copper Princesses nearly grabbed an equaliser in added time when Blessing Maluba’s long-range strike hit the crossbar.
“The fact that we were able to attack and only concede once shows we have what it takes. We tried our best but our best wasn’t good enough, we slept for one second so hard luck indeed and it’s now back to the drawing board where we have to take maximum points in the next match [against Poland],” said coach Carol Kanyemba.
The Copper Princesses now focus on their next Group D fixture against Poland set for 01h00CAT on 21 October at the Felix Sanchez stadium. Poland drew 0-0 with Japan in their opening game.
