The Federal Government has donated ₦30 million to the family of the late Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the renowned designer of Nigeria’s National Flag, nearly two years after his passing.
The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, accompanied by the Oyo State Director of the agency, Olukemi Afolayan, presented the cheque on behalf of the Federal Government at the late hero’s residence in Elebu, Ibadan, on Thursday.
According to PUNCH Online, Akinkunmi passed away on August 29, 2023, at the age of 87.
On September 4, 2023, President Bola Tinubu sent a government delegation led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Malagi, to condole with the family.
During the visit, the government pledged a national burial and financial support in recognition of Akinkunmi’s contributions to the country.
Speaking on the donation, the NOA DG clarified that the ₦30 million was not a payment for the late designer’s services but a token of appreciation to support his family.
In response, one of Akinkunmi’s sons, Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the financial assistance.
