Chidera Ejuke made a cameo appearance at the Montilivi Stadium on Saturday as Sevilla defeated Girona 2-1 on the road after the visiting team missed an early penalty kick and fell behind in the first half.
This victory was secured by a late goal from Dodi Lukebakio.
.Sevilla now sits nine in the standings with 26 points, two points ahead of eighth-place Girona, after the victory, moved them up from 13th.
In the third minute, Oriol Romeu pulled down Isaac Romero in the area, giving the visitors the ideal opportunity to take the lead.
However, Girona goalie Paulo Gazzaniga stooped to his left to block Romero’s attempt from the penalty spot.
Ruben Vargas then lost a second chance by hitting his shot into the side netting, but Gazzaniga saved him with his legs straight.
Ivan Martin set up Abel Ruiz in the area for Girona to produce a clear-cut opportunity, but Sevilla keeper Orjan Nyland was first to react and came out to block the attempt.
As Sevilla persisted in applying pressure, Lukebakio received Romero’s cross and his attempt beat Gazzaniga but ricocheted against the crossbar.
After a brief corner and a quick header from captain Arnau Martinez beat Nyland, Viktor Tsyhankov floated the ball into the box to give Girona the lead a minute later.
Early in the second half, Sevilla tried to equalise. Gazzaniga saved Saul Niguez’s headed attempt from a corner kick, but he made no mistake with the rebound and fired his close-range strike into the net in the 59th minute.
After two straight victories, Girona had an opportunity to grab the lead again, but Martinez missed the far post with a shot from a strong position in the area.
The home team’s momentum was stopped by a late goal.
With two minutes remaining, Niguez headed the ball to Lukebakio, who took it into the area, ducked around a defender, and slid his shot past the goalie to give Sevilla all three points.
At that point, it appeared as though the game would end in a draw.
