Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) stormed Urban Radio 94.5 FM in Enugu on Monday, arresting a presenter during a live broadcast.
The EFCC agents reportedly seized equipment from the station during the raid.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the radio station’s management expressed regret over the sudden disruption of its programming, specifically the interruption of its live show, Prime Times.
According to the statement, armed EFCC officers forcibly removed the presenter and confiscated broadcasting equipment without providing a reason.
“The Board and Management of Urban Radio 94.5 FM Enugu regret the abrupt termination of our programme around 6:45 p.m. on Monday. Armed men identified as EFCC operatives barged into the studio, disrupted Prime Times, forcefully took our presenter, and removed essential communications equipment without explanation,” the statement read.
The station condemned the EFCC’s actions as “unethical” and pledged to pursue the matter further.
EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, told Premium Times that the presenter, identified as Ms. Ekoh, was arrested due to her alleged involvement in a Ponzi scheme that defrauded over 100 Nigerians.
According to Oyewale, Ms. Ekoh had ignored multiple invitations from the agency, leading to her arrest when the operatives recognized her voice on air.
“She was taken to our office, made a statement, and was released shortly after,” Oyewale confirmed.
